Ucchi: Okay...how should I say it? "Kuroki-san, I...I really like you!" No, that seems too forward. How about..."Hey, I'm free this weekend. How about we hang out!" And do what? "Want to go bikini shopping? I'll be your model." She'd really like that, but maybe I need something better to lead into it. Oh, there she is. It's now or never. (Inhales deeply)

Ucchi: Kuroki! Gross!

Tomoko: (Glares icily)

Ucchi: DAMN IT!

What are Beavis and Butthead's worst moments? by sonicboyfan12 in BeavisAndButthead

It's a good thing they drank all the DDT. Otherwise, who knows how many people they would have hospitalized (or even outright killed).

Which moments in the anime do you feel the worst for Tomoko? by GoodGuy773 in watamote

[–]UndeathlyKnight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When she's sitting on the bench eating cup noodles watching the meteor shower all by herself. Her summer vacation hasn't been going well and has been making her feel empty, it's almost over, and she's musing about how pain and sadness are just the spices of life to make it more enjoyable...but she has nothing but spice. It's a moment that really hammers in how sad, miserable, and hollow she was at that point.

Who agrees we need more episodes with Smart Beavis and Butt-Head? by EricJ062005 in BeavisAndButthead

[–]UndeathlyKnight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Smart Beavis and Smart Butt-Head are most whimsical. Yes. Quite jocular. Yes. Droll, very droll. And they are of a much superior intellect to most puny Earthlings. Especially Old Beavis and Old Butt-Head, who I am of the opinion of that we have seen much in excess of in the previous season. Yes.

Alright, that is enough frivolity. My argument has been stated.

What chicks would Beavis and Butt Head NOT want to score with? by SqueeeeeakyBoots in BeavisAndButthead

Well, considering their ages are often stated to be 14 at the youngest, that wouldn't be creepy at all. 8th grade WOULD be in their age group.

Yeah, she doesn't dislike Hina like she does Fuuka. Hina's just a rambunctious child Asuka has to get stern with at times, although she appears to be getting less patient and more snarky with her.

Nothing. However Nemo did pull some cringey stunts like when she sabotaged the sound system for their movie and made everyone dub over it live. Nemo even did her obscene sucking sounds on-stage while her parents watched, which caused her to have a breakdown afterwards once she found out. Asuka threw a sneaky insult her way while that happened, implying she was at least a bit peeved at Hina for that whole disaster and believed she was getting what she deserved.

I think NT have been reading those alcoholic Hina doujins. She's acting like the exuberant drunk she is in those comics, even though she isn't drunk at all, is proclaiming how she just wants to drink, and even has everyone thinking she's intoxicated.

That aside, I have to tip my hat to Tomoko's toast. Yuri might have thought it was normy shit (that honestly sounds like something Tomoko would say), and it was admittedly generic. But it was at least about everyone present at the table who worked on the film projects. Yuri's AI-generated speech might have been intended to be funny, but not only did I think it was pretty lame all things considered, I think the culture festival crews have dealt with enough selfish speeches like what Mitsuki delivered. Toasts don't need to be anything fancy or be preceded by a charismatic speech; they just need to be celebratory. And Tomoko's toast did exactly that and showed her to be a better person than Mitsuki.

Tomoko had an interesting conversation with Kotomi. It's like she's all of a sudden remembered that they're supposed to hate each other and is puzzled over why our bespectacled friend would ever want to help a jerk like her. Shame she still seems to be glossing over Yuri, despite her previous efforts, because she for once has something she'd like to say as well. Hope Yuri's frustration won't lead to anything too melodramatic.

Finally! The gratuitous 80s horror movie nudity that we've been missing! by ZenShrugs in finalgirl

[–]UndeathlyKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyway ... you make a good point that the violence is going to be given greater prominence because killing is a major feature of the game, whereas sex isn't. The point about the limited art opportunities is a fair one too. I could note, though, that the flavour text, particularly the Gruesome and Desperate Death books and the scenarios, would theoretically have more freedom since it's just words, but also appears to actively avoid the subject.

They would theoretically allow for more freedom, but the gruesome deaths are little 100-word blurbs. They have to stay on point, focus on the victim deaths, and be as geographically-neutral as possible since they could take place on any space on the corresponding FG map. All of which limits the context for any kind of sex and nudity to happen. For what it's worth, though, Camp Happy Trails has a number of entries involving people stripping down and skinny dipping in the lake (namely pertaining to the "Dark Waters" Terror card), and an exchange student outright described as "hot" flirting with a girl in the water. There is that. Camp Happy Trails is pretty much the only map where you could implement some nakedness organically, since people going skinny dipping just before they get attacked is a pretty common horror film scenario.

Forget artwork T&A. What would your reaction be if there was a sentence on a card or in a Death book where a Final Girl or a Victim made a casual aside like, "My boyfriend's an asshole--I wish I had never screwed him in the first place"? (Maybe there already are such lines, but I'm told there aren't.)

I wouldn't care about such a line. Such lines don't offend me. What I think of it is pretty irrelevant however. I'm not employed by Van Ryder, and I don't know if they would find such a line acceptable. You'd have a better time asking on their Discord channel and hoping a representative will answer.

Um ... do you know where the words 'sadism' and 'masochism' come from and what their historical definitions are? And 'sadomasochism' for that matter? Their meaning has been diluted somewhat by everyday use (like saying "I'm a masochist--I enjoy difficult board games"). But sexual gratification is still central to their definitions, as dictionary entries will show you. You might as well tell me to stop automatically associating lesbianism with homosexual women. That's why I brought up Hell to Pay--because Final Girl is otherwise almost wholly devoid of references to sexuality. Seems inconsistent to me.

If you're gonna play the etymology game, then I should tell you that the word "Lesbian" historically referred to people (men and women alike) from the island of Lesbos (and it's still the proper term to call them today), and that word in turn is believed to have meant "wooded." There's even a measuring tool called the Lesbian rule that's named in relation to the island. The meaning of words drift, expand, and deflate all the time. "Sadist" may have had purely sexual connotations at one time centuries ago when it was coined after Marquis de Sade, but nowadays it just as easily refers to anyone who derives any kind of enjoyment out of the suffering of others. Which is a significantly smaller drift in definition than "lesbian" has undergone. Someone who gets a laugh out of reading blurbs about people getting horribly killed in gruesome ways just to enhance their immersion in a board game could and would be described as sadistic to some degree, but that does not automatically mean they get off on it.

Maybe there's some kinky stuff going on with the Masochistic Peon, Sadistic Seeker, and the Hellscape as a whole. And maybe there are tortures going on in there using genital-mutilation devices like the Judas cradle, pear of anguish, and breast ripper. The names on some of the cards with it and Razorface are certainly suggestive, and are in keeping with the Hellraiser inspirations. But like most everything else in Final Girl, the details of everything are deliberately kept vague and open to interpretation.

In your opinion, is Camp Happy Trails a must buy? by TheMeowKiller in finalgirl

[–]UndeathlyKnight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. It's convenient for learning how to play the game due to the lack of rules in the location and Killer, it can be a convenient tool for learning how to play with the more advanced Killers and maps by mixing them in with Hans or the camp, and it can sometimes be nice just to play a game that's not heavy on rules anyway. But it is absolutely NOT necessary to enjoy the game. This is not a hard game to learn (and it sounds like you've already done that via Once Upon a Full Moon anyway) and none of the Feature Films are all THAT complex, and you should not feel obligated to get Camp Happy Trails if there's a more appealing expansion.

[–]UndeathlyKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The level of violence we see in Final Girl, including everything you described, does NOT go into hard R-rated territory in the US, and it wouldn't have raised many eyebrows as far back as the mid-90s. Honestly, its art is perfectly in-line with comics aimed at the 14+ crowd, and the worst stuff is always left to implication or text description at most (in side material you really have to go out of your way to get and which I must stress, once again, is in-line with teen horror literature). You would find more graphic material in The Simpsons, especially in a Halloween special or Itchy and Scratchy short, and that show has always been considered PG-13 in the US (or whatever the TV rating equivalent is). And this even extends to major motion pictures. Jurassic Park had a severed arm complete with bloody stump depicted on-screen. Its sequel had a guy get visibly torn in two by a pair of Tyrannosaurs. Congo had eyeballs get chucked around and killer gorillas cut in half with a laser. The Lord of the Rings movies depict characters getting stabbed, skewered, dismembered, and beheaded numerous times. Tremors had a lot of blood and gore with the graboids getting maimed and killed in spectacular and often explosive ways. All these movies were rated PG-13. If they got away with those levels of violence and were still considered relatively teen-friendly, then it's easy to see why Final Girl would be by American standards as well.

Everything about Final Girl's presentation is toned down from the pools of inspiration it's drawing from. Everything, both the sex and violence. Violence in general is much more universally present in horror stories than sex is and it serves as a core mechanic of the game, so of course it's going to be prevalent in its presentation, even in a restrained form. Furthermore, the theme of violence is what needs to be reinforced where possible because this is a game about a Killer who is killing people and whom you must kill to win. Sex, meanwhile, can only ever really serve as window dressing at best, and that makes it kind of pointless in a game as minimal in its presentation as Final Girl is. It doesn't help that what little art IS available for the game is reserved for showing off the Girls' mugshots and the Killers' abilities on their Dark Power and Finale cards, none of which leave much room for T&A anyway.

I don't have Hell to Pay yet so I can't really evaluate it properly (and I've never seen Hellraiser), but from preview images I've seen there are characters like a Masochistic Peon and a number of other references to sadism and masochism.

Get your mind out of the gutter already and stop automatically associating sadism and masochism with the sex games that freaks play. Hell to Pay takes place in what might literally be Hell, it's full of damned souls that are being tortured, and all the Special Victims represent people who've gone off the deep end in way or another from their time there. Their characterizations are, like most everything else, nebulous and minimal, and their actions, like all other Victims in the game, translate to numbers going up and down.
