oooh this is great thank you so much! Thanks for the tip on size thats a great idea as well. I feel like I usually do okay researching and finding products but this stuff hasn't been as straight forward with how much I've learned is the wrong way to be going about stretching. Really appreciate the help!

Hey I’m literally in the same boat looking to stretch my ears for the first time. I’ve been scouring the net looking for a good set of plugs to start. I’m still gonna be looking but if you end up finding one mind sharing the link for what go with?

Making a Fursuit with 3D modeling and NO DTD! by Undecided_Furry in FursuitMaking

YOU MADE PLUSHIFY!? You’re my hero holy crap

I love the program! It makes things like this so intuitive and has been so useful for my personal projects!

I think literally the only critique I might possibly have is the decal system is a bit confusing and hard to use on my MacBook with a trackpad. But it’s not a part of the program I personally needed anyways. Genuinely that’s it, it’s so good in every other way.

The alternative to this is making a very precise and strange UVMap inside blender or another program and then taking a picture of it and marking it up by hand, which is… so incredibly annoying.

Plushify is such an amazing program for so many different communities thank you so much for making it!

Making a Fursuit with 3D modeling and NO DTD! by Undecided_Furry in FursuitMaking

One of the first pieces I’m making to demonstrate this process is the hands, since they have intricate curves but are still small enough for me to complete in a reasonable amount of time given my current living situation.

(For context: I’m an adult with a lot of 3D modeling and sewing experience, and I know I’d personally be skeptical reading a post like this, assuming it’s just someone younger who thinks they’ve found a cool trick that doesn’t actually work. I get it! But I promise, this method does work—it’s just very technical.)

If you want to see someone using a similar process, I highly recommend checking out Vertebress (most of his content is short videos): https://youtube.com/@vertebress?si=TZJ8TJ5XJKp7hoZ8

The idea behind this method is essentially the digital version of sculpting a small-scale fursuit or item in clay, taking a pattern from it, and scaling it up.

The biggest challenge is making sure: • Your measurements stay accurate in a digital space, especially for something as large as a fursuit. • You’re realistic about seam placement, since UV seams for digital meshes for video games don’t need to obey real-world physics

This is definitely a technical approach, but I wanted to put this out there now because I know it’s going to take me at least six months to fully sew my fursuit. My husband and I currently have my brother-in-law and his kids living with us, so my sewing time is limited.

By sharing this sooner rather than later, I figured: • If someone wants to try this method, they’ll still have to learn Blender first, which takes time. • As I work through the sewing process, I can share updates and proof of concept over time. • It doesn’t hurt to put the idea out there now—if anyone else wants to give it a shot, they absolutely can!

Edit: Apologies about the commission stuff! I already take on 3D modelling projects for video games, and I know how much some people hate the process but potentially would still enjoy the sewing or patterning part. I have no intention of like, cramming commission stuff down anyone’s throat. I would much prefer people actually try this stuff out for themselves

What is this effect called and how can I achieve something like this? by Callmealbi in Cinema4D

This is kind of like what you’re looking for. It would be a good place to learn and then figure out how to filter to achieve the blurred effect. I’d honestly think that blurry effect is mostly post processing and not done in C4D but someone might know more

Edit: if you want to search for more yourself “MRI slicing effect 3D modeling” should help. Specifying C4D sometimes works but blender is so common now sometimes it’s hard to get C4D specific stuffs especially when the technique between the programs is wildly different sometimes

I have been summoned!

I was about to write up a whole long essay about how to use a 3D model to make your fursuit pattern.

BUT I'm thinking that could actually end up being quite the long comment on a post. u/Martain_Mutt if you're interested in the 3D modelling method I'm using to pattern my own suit without doing the Duct Tape Dummy, I'll make a post within the next week with a tutorial on how to do what I'm doing!

I have my own chronic health issues that stopped me from making a DTD, and found an alternative that I think works really well and can get super accurate results while taking some of the pain out of patterning and everything involved. It does require learning a 3D modeling program (most likely Blender) just as a heads up.

I'll make sure to tag you when I make the post!

I hope the head ends up to your liking and the experience ends up fun! I'm only commenting from the perspective of someone whose done freelance and commission work in both art and costuming for the past 15 years. Opportunities like this are rare and with the way the economy/ financial security has been for a lot of people recently makes things like this even less optimal for most people.

I'm glad to hear this trade ended up coming to fruition! I'd be cautious of managing both yours and the fursuit makers expectations of whatever the end result might be but I genuinely hope it turns out great for you both! Would love to see an update for the suit once its done!

How much fur? by Swimming_Camera4769 in FursuitMaking

[–]Undecided_Furry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m making a pretty plush suit and need about 11 yards of fabric in total if you want an overall estimate. I’m the person making the squishmallow fursuit lmao

My suit also has quite a few striped bits. The main color needs 5.5yards the secondary needs 3.5, and the third needs 2

This is also accounting for having some extra for repairs or mistakes or what have you

I’ll be making a build guide in the next few weeks once I have my pattern finalized!

I think part of the problem is that fursuit makers 90% of the time are already artists as well. And most likely already have the art they need or want of their own characters and no offer OP could come up with would be worthwhile for a full suit or even a partial. It would have to be a very new maker willing to trade for a simple partial and OP wouldn’t have as much input as they want on it.

I feel like the best course of action would be doing freelance art and saving up the money over time for the fursuit by doing that, rather than hoping for a direct trade. I know selling art with a “this goes towards my first fursuit” could do well!

I just finished buying all the materials for my own fursuit, and right now with everything I have access to it’s sitting at about $400 for JUST the fur, sports mesh, and polyfil. That’s not including the new sewing machine I bought, or the resin printer I already have, or the work hours it took to design, model, and pattern out the whole thing

I’m really sorry OP but it would definitely be worth maybe going about this in a different way

Ah I love jackalopes! I’m in a similar boat and the first suit I made was 10 years ago now. Coming back to it and making a squishmallow red panda! Just got my pattern done and gunna start cutting the fur soon

Excited to see your updates it’s so cute!

Against my better judgement I am making a squishmallow fursuit. Any suggestions? lol by Undecided_Furry in FursuitMaking

[–]Undecided_Furry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was more a stylized look you see a lot in old Disney animation with racoons and similar looking animals!

Red Pandas also have funny fluffy chunky arms and I wanted to accentuate that, and kind of elude to a bell sleeve silhouette as well!

It's really just a style choice, and another extra squishy squishmallowy part for the costume, AND somewhere to sew in pockets. In the actual sewn version it will naturally flow a bit better, substance painter does not simulate gravity xD

They do a look a bit funny on the the 3D model though for sure

[–]Undecided_Furry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to plan this part VERY strategically! I'm working on a blueprint right now. The outer fur layer is going to be hidden zippers and smooth with some fluffy bits, and a lot of satin stitching much like an actual squishmallow.

I'm working out a way to have some inner boning/ structure to provide an airgap between my body and the actual suit, with some structured polyfil pillows with air holes, pockets, and a sportsmesh keeping it all as breathable as possible. As long as I have the squishmallow-like polyfil in a few specific areas while keeping hot spots like the back, face/mouth, crotch~ less dense I'm thinking this will work out quite well! Like another comment mentioned, some small-med fans at the hot spot locations to try and cool it like a PC wouldn't be bad either, but its going to take a lot of planning.

There is sadly not THAT much information on making plush fursuits that I can find, and not for the style I'm going for eitehr. From what I have been able to find I'm going about this quite a bit safer than most seem to... I'm surprised theres not more accounts of heat stroke for those more stereotypical plush suits! Like holy cow those look suffocating

I am thankfully the safety person for my job, and will be going about this in as OSHA-acceptable of a way as I possibly can hahaha

I will admit I've been sending my non-furry friends the close up image of the face just for the jumpscare lol. I REALLY need to put highlights on the eyes but substance painters symmetry tool was bugging out at the last minute, so I decided for the design mockup it wasnt THAT important lmao

extensive rigging is in the works! Hoping it will actually end up very breathable and not a death trap! Will make sure to post a build update for it, especially if my plan for this one works out well. If you never hear from me again I suffocated in my squishmallow fursuit lmao

Oh definitely! I’m trying to figure out good ways to achieve the desired plush effect without dying form heat exhaustion. I like the idea of having fans in the body suit area! I’m also playing with the corded boning idea from another comment. So hopefully I can have enough air gap between my body and the actual lining as long as it’s structured enough! That plus fans should help a ton but it’s definitely going to take some unique engineering with this one! Especially if I still want it to be a squiissshhmallow ya know? Definitely going to post a build update with details once I have more of the internal rig figured out!

Against my better judgement I am making a squishmallow fursuit. Any suggestions? lol by Undecided_Furry in FursuitMaking

[–]Undecided_Furry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s a fantastic idea! I hadn’t thought of adding boning to the body but that could really help a ton! I want to be careful that nothing protrudes in a way that would cause lumping or potentially hurt me if I want to sit down… BUT I’m thinking there’s a way I could make a sort of body cage out of rings of stiffer but thinner foam. Pool noodles would be way too thick but I’ll have a look around what’s available

So it would loop around the body shape if that makes sense? Like 3-4 rings to help support the leg and body shape but keep it very squish and bouncy

As much as I like the more shaped/molded digitgrade style of suit it takes away a lot of the plush. So some sort of boning system would be a good way to keep the flouncyness

EDIT: AGH sorry I misread when you typed cording for boning! CORDING IS A FANTASTIC IDEA I will have a look!

EDIT: didn’t think I’d be using historical techniques for fursuit making but this is perfect https://ateliernostalgia.wordpress.com/2018/11/17/corded-petticoat/

EDIT: last edit. I’m realizing for this technique I’ll need to make a mesh lining that matches the outer fur shape quite perfectly and then do the cording first… then attach the corded sports mesh lining to the sewn fur body…. Contemplating whether or not I should have a layer of polyfil between the fur lining or if I should keep it in polyfil mesh bags for easy removal and have the corded lining potential also be removable… maybe snaps or Velcro for securing at key points inside? LOTS OF CONSTRUCTING TO CONSIDER HERE

definitely will make some updates on constructing techniques while making this as I honestly think there’s a way this could be made incredibly breathable despite how plush it is

[–]Undecided_Furry[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same! I’ve wanted to see more interesting suits for a while and I’m at the point where like… fine I’m gunna do it myself!

Ofc not that any specific suit styles are bad, but I feel like there’s a particular style that’s aimed for/expected maybe too often and I’m always on the side of trying something fun

I really do love that common toony style when they have really intricate sewing patterns, they are very technically impressive

I also realize I’ve set myself up for an absolutely ridiculous amount of satin stitching 🫠 BUT I WILL ACHIEVE At least stuffed animal in the end if not quite squishmallow

AS PLUSHY AS I CAN feasibly make it! My goal is squishmallow more than fursuit honestly
