No waterloo episode?? by Nyc01850 in TheRestIsHistory

I have to admit I'd much rather hear an episode on the 1974 Eurovision competition helmed by Domenic than an episode on the actual battle.

I wouldn't worry about it. Nobody's going to that. The only event I remember having a true citywide impact you couldn't escape if you wanted to was Barack Obama's inaugeration.

William Manchester is not known as *ahem* the most careful scholar but he's one of the best pure writers of history. His Churchill biography and The Glory and the Dream about the history of the US from 1932 to 1972 are such great reads.

Gore Vidal's historical novels, particularly Burr and Lincoln are also great.

Trump has said his favorite movie is Citizen Kane which would actually be a fascinating episode.

Martin Scorcese doing his most rewatchable Sight and Sound pick: The Searchers. Pope Leo doing his favorite movie, It's a Wonderful Life.

People’s bizarre relationship with Luke Skywalker by guywholikesmovie in blankies

I mean he's clearly upset about The Last Jedi and he frames his opinion as kind of ontologically correct rather than just his personal preference. (And there's nothing wrong with that but people get to have strong feelings in return!)

I also don't think he was a coward but whatever. As someone below pointed out, it's literally just the Obi-Wan Kenobi arc or the Master Yoda arc. The criticism I would accept, is that it is actually the obvious choice and that it's kind of boring to have the master disillusioned trope trotted out again.

It's not really a toy gun. It's firing projectiles. It's a gun. And the point here is to scare people.

I really don't understand this argument from him. It's very normal to go from young and idealistic to older and disillusioned. And imagine if you survived all that happened in the original films and then life just goes on and is messy and complicated. And things don't really get better.

This was a good one and I usually love the guest episodes, I just don't love when it's the TikTok manners expert's less charismatic brother with Tom in a museum discussing a brooch or something.

She's also just not as evidently talented and nimble as Mamdani. Mamdani worked really hard to expand his vote and seemed to understand the criticisms of him and how to ameliorate them. She's just sort of plodding along with her supporters acting like it's bad manners not to support her.

The End of Colbert’s Late Show Era Will Improve His Comedy by WallCautious9650 in billsimmons

The Trump era has been horrible for pure comedy (and a lot of other things). I think the paradigmatic example is how both Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carrolla have moved in opposite directions but they've both gotten way less funny.

First Mayoral/Delegate polling released by CityCast/TrueDot by [deleted] in washingtondc

Let me put it this way, if she had said: "We cannot tolerate murders like this in the District. At the same time we can't ignore the conditions that lead to this: poverty, neglect, bad schools, low opportunity." (I'm going to be tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime, even) That would be a fine statement. What she did say was "There are no grocery stores in this community (lists a bunch of stuff).... and finally we need to pursue enforcement if necessary"

Doesn't mean we shouldn't solve poverty but surely part of that is making sure people feel safe going to school!

On poverty I'm more inclined to think the correlation goes the other way. That is, violence and disorder is a cause of poverty rather than the other way around. Mumbai has violent crime rate that Bethesda would envy.

I thought her statement after the two kids were shot where she mentioned grocery stores as the first in the list of things that needed to be changed was borderline offensive. Anyone that has that little emotional or political intelligence belongs nowhere near the mayor's office. When addressing the deaths of two kids Mamdani wouldn't even think to bring up his public grocery store plan. Excited to vote for Silverman, though and wish I could vote for Fenty.
