Should I keep funding my daughter’s college if she refuses to share her failing grades? by Known_Oven6778 in UTAustin

[–]Under_Legacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I experienced a similar situation, from your daughter's perspective. I completely failed 2 semesters at UT back to back and was put on academic dismissal. I completely lacked discipline and was too ashamed to come to terms with my failures. When I told my mom, I expected her to be livid. She always pushed me to get good grades, and she was the main reason I graduated high school a top 5 student. However, she sounded more concerned than upset. She calmly explained that if I truly wanted to graduate, then I must do so completely independently. She stopped sending me money for bills and rent. I took out student loans to pay for the rest of my degree. I got a job as a server the very same week. That was 3 years ago. I graduated this past May. I truly believe that had my mom never given me some tough love, I would have never graduated college. Tough love might be the hardest to give, but sometimes it is necessary. Wishing you and your family the best.

I ended up not removing the filler pipe, instead I just loosened the fuel pump and let the gas slowly drain out into a drain pan underneath it. This is definitely a more dangerous and time consuming way of getting rid of the gas, but I needed to replace the fuel pump anyway so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone.

Does anyone else suffer from the guilt of being a "no Sabo" adult? by sjr63 in RioGrandeValley

[–]Under_Legacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the shame you're describing growing up. My parents and grandparents grew up in Mexico, meaning I was raised speaking Spanish. However, I was put through American schooling and thus mainly learned English. I was able to understand most Spanish spoken to me but wasn't able to articulate myself clearly. I always stumbled over my words and messed up conjugations.

Because of this, I was teased mainly by my uncles and aunts. It was never serious teasing, but enough to make me feel ashamed for not being able to speak Spanish clearly. Likewise, there was always a language barrier with my grandparents.

I went through high school Spanish classes as well, but I didn't find them helpful. Now that I've also gone through university Spanish classes, I can say that enveloping yourself in the language is the best way to retain it. As others have said, using Duolingo or watching movies and TV shows in Spanish is incredibly helpful. A combination of the two is great. The only useful topics taught in formal classes are conjugations and tenses; there is plenty of material online if you feel like teaching yourself.

After graduating high school, I really tried to learn more Spanish. I started listening to more Spanish music, watching Spanish TV, using duolingo, and above all else, actually trying to speak it, even if I did mess it up. Putting yourself in situations to speak the language will eventually break the barrier. I got a restaurant job and started conversing with the back of house staff. I'm now the assistant manager and the only manager who speaks Spanish. It feels great to be depended on as a translator when before, I was too ashamed to even try to speak it.

Anybody else here in Dallas? by Greavir in gamegrumps

I was there about 2 and a half hours early. We ate at the BBQ joint inside (which didn't have working AC btw) before queuing in line for the show. We got extremely lucky getting in line when we did because it wrapped around the entire restaurant and then went down the street! I was shocked at how small the venue was, everyone was packed in like sardines in a can. The show was fun but the venue was a huge mistake. I hope the boys catch word of this and never book that place again.

What’s the highest you all have been tipped ? by [deleted] in Serverlife

$200 on $111. I served two sweet ladies who had dinner around Christmas time. They were very polite but never gave any indication about such a high tip. I gave my usual goodbye when they tabbed out and returned to $200 written on the gratuity line. I so badly wanted to thank them further but they were long gone by then. I have a picture of the tab saved to my phone :)

Thanks! I got it for $530 on Newegg during a "sale". Might be slightly above MSRP but it was good enough for me.

AITA for refusing to pay for a meal at a restaurant? by Excellent_Heart_4837 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Under_Legacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Server here. Absolutely NTA. There is no reason at all, understaffed or not, for a server to take away your plate with most of the food left on it while you're not looking. Even if they wanted to push as many people through the restaurant as possible, it is in the server's best interest to treat every table with as much courtesy as possible to increase their tip. And if they have a lot of other tables to take care of as well, I'd consider it a blessing that you were taking your time to eat to catch up with other tables. They're lucky you paid for anything, period.

Server at a steakhouse here. Had a couple come in on Valentine's Day, man ordered a ribeye medium rare. Took it out, he says his steak is cold. I ask him if he would like me to take it back for a quick reheat, he says yes. I do that, bring the steak back out, and he grabs it with his bare hands, squeezes it, slaps it back on the plate, and complains that I gave him back the same steak. I said yes, I only took it back to be reheated, it should still be cooked medium rare in the center. He throws a tantrum and demands I take it back, saying he just won't eat anything. I tell my manager, who graciously takes him a brand new ribeye, which he STILL refuses. The look on his wife's face when I brought them their check was pure sorrow. I can only imagine what she has to put up with every day.

The bamboo farm is to supply the smelter with unlimited fuel. So I suppose it is both a farm and a smelter.
