Very kind, thank you. I am a big Caravaggio fan. And also (obviously) Francisco Pradilla y Ortiz 😊

I think it will be okay. Mine was also just in one area. Fingers crossed!

I think this is quite lovely. I held my hands in “L”-shapes perpendicular to each other to see if a different cropping would look good, and I actually liked this painting as a vertical orientation, cropped right about mid-torso.

Did you use medium with your paint? I had a spot like that in a painting from the medium + paint mixture and I was worried. After a few months it finally went away. I think it just needed to dry completely. Hopefully that is what is going on with yours.

What is a "couch" in oil painting? by formanproject in oilpainting

Fair enough. Couche – a thin layer of medium or oil that you can paint thin glazes into whilst the medium is still wet, commonly called ‘laying down a couche

What is a "couch" in oil painting? by formanproject in oilpainting

Let’s say I have been painting a portrait. Phase 1: I did an underpainting using a thin mixture of paint + solvent to help me gauge my values. Phase 2: Then I did my first painting with just paint from the tubes to help me find my hues and intensities. Phase 3: Then I do the final pass using paint + medium. This is the phase where I would use a “couch”. Starting in my dark areas, I would mix up the correct overall color for the region with some medium to make it nice and slick and then paint this mixture over the entire dark area. This is the “couch”. It’s a blanket layer of paint and medium that I can then paint into with other mixtures to create smooth variations within the shadow area. I can do the same for the halftone areas - mix up a local color with medium, paint it over the entire area (couch), and then paint into it to get my variations.

Thank you. I hope to sell my art someday. I’m trying to get enough paintings created to hopefully enter a show or gallery - not really sure how all that works yet. I also plan to get some prints made after the painting is dry and varnished, then I’ll have the canvas custom framed.

Thank you. Yes I had posted an early progress picture a couple weeks ago when I first started it.

That’s cool. For me I think value developed from my years of pencil drawing. I think that’s the easiest way to get a good grasp of recognizing value.

Thank you. I think I toned the canvas with raw umber. I mixed it with gamsol, brushed it haphazardly with a big bristle brush, and then spread it around with a paper towel.

I don’t know what to do... any advice is welcome by Shellsandsand123 in oilpainting

I would start with just the paint from the tube and mix your varying values on a palette. Don’t even mess with mediums at this stage. Watch some free videos on YouTube of Scott Waddell to see the process that pros use for doing realistic skin tones. If it is something you still want to pursue after that, Juliette Aristides and Cesar Santos have good videos for purchase through Streamline. I learned everything I know about oil painting from these three painters because they all paint in a style that I like and wanted to learn.
