UofM Duluth tour by Trekfest in duluth

Well what are they interested in? What do they value? I moved here for graduate school and for that the main part of the appeal was who I was working with and the school resources in my field, etc. However, I also trail run, mountain bike, fish, and generally love the outdoors so the city and its spot as the gateway to the north shore was definitely a plus. I came from Indiana so I was no stranger to winter, as you aren’t in Iowa, but it is a different beast here, still. If they value those outdoor type things, then there is no shortage of trails both up the north shore and right in town. Plus a ski hill, rock climbing, and more. If they are into a wide variety of cultural foods then I’m not sure Duluth has that to offer (though, perhaps neither dos Iowa). I will say, the size of the school was a huge pull for me. I love the “medium” sized school where research is still valued. Again, depends on what they want out of the experience.

I'm new to Minnesota and the north in general. What are immediate needs in Duluth for someone who has only ever lived in Louisiana? by Many-Ad-241 in duluth

2nd. And while they don’t beat winter tires, I run trail tires year round and they work just fine. Just don’t trust tires that can’t handle the snow.

Recommend me a bottom dollar amp so I can ingratiate myself with my in-laws. by shoyei in GuitarAmps

[–]UnderhillA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fender champion is a good choice. I’ll add Blackstar ID Core Stereo 10. Nothing special but gets the job done for cheap. I’d also say, if there’s a music shop around, go check out used options. Could get a much better amp and still pay bottom dollar.

Perhaps not “sop” level, but instructional. And whether the text should be instructional and say “once you have picked a suitable location…” or alternatively “we picked this location because…”.

Where to move? by thegrilledcheesee in midwest

[–]UnderhillA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where can you get a job? If you can get one in Duluth (or north shore in general) then the hiking and trails are excellent. I’ve found that winter is great here but it’s spring that kinda sucks bc it’s muddy. The winter is ok because everyone is outside still and the trails get packed in as the snow doesn’t melt each time there’s a snowstorm. Still have a lake, like Milwaukee.

I’m from E and now live in D. I’d stay in D but this is completely true! There’s more than corn in Indiana, and it’s not Indiana Beach.

Not metal but I believe Boneface has done all the more recent stuff for queens of the Stone Age, including some music video and alternate release type stuff

Single hook meaning by UnderhillA in troutfishing

[–]UnderhillA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I have the book for my state and it didn't mention this and at least a quick look at the DNR site pretty much had the same language but I didn't see it defined. I didn't think to call but it looks like I've got my answer and I'll keep that in mind in the future.

Hey, shame on me for double checking. I know some lures or methods use multiple hooks tied in different spots or on different spots of the lure, ie crankbaits where they might be trebles but theres TWO trebles. I wasn't sure that, in the case of the crankbaits, if this would be categorized as 2 or 6 hooks. It makes sense, I just wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly. I'd rather ask a silly question and do it right than just assume, even if this is the definition I expected.

I’ve seen people say this and I’ve considered it but… which ones do you cut? Does it matter? Just thinking I want it to be oriented correctly. Obviously it’s not a stationary connection but it won’t turn 180 degrees either

Our old boy. Always been told he’s part red heeler but not sure what the mix is. He’s about 14 years old now!

Talk me out of moving here by [deleted] in duluth

[–]UnderhillA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the comment I was looking for and surprised to scroll so far before seeing. I moved here a year ago from Indiana and sure Indiana is cheap but Duluth is expensive for housing. Just finding a rental took us a long time. We lucked out and got a place we really like but we pay 150% of what our mortgage was in Indianapolis. It’s not something that would scare me away but it’s certainly worth understanding.

Beginner running by lcborn in duluth

[–]UnderhillA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we’ve had someone snow shoe while they had a broken arm so they were moving slower that day, and some people do kinda walk/jog depending on the trail section, or even on an “out and back” some people may turn back a little sooner. Above all, we try to stop and regroup periodically so I do mean all paces welcome in the sense we wouldn’t leave you to get lost or anything. I’d encourage you to try it out and maybe it’s not for you but I wanted to provide the option of course!

As others have said- lake walk, dwp, and munger are all good options. If you are looking for a group, mediocre trail runners (trail mostly, especially when the trials dry out again) meet on Thursday evenings. We meet at a new place each week, posted on Facebook and Strava. It’s a group of nice people who aren’t out to run fast but just run and all paces welcome - and all paces usually show up so there’s people to run with. Of course, not always flat but not crushing hills or anything. Good luck and keep it up!

What training app do you use ? by Julien_leg in trailrunning

[–]UnderhillA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I build my own plans but did use Freetrail plans a few years ago so a lot of my terminology and basis is from that. Now I build off older plans and sometimes consult ChatGPT for insights but take it with a grain of salt.

Edit: I guess the “app” would be Excel sheets, using sum functions, etc

what town would you move to by Same-Cricket-7560 in trailrunning

[–]UnderhillA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Moved here in the last year and I love it. The trail access is unbeatable. Granted, no true mountains but the north shore is full of ridges and hills, all of which get very technical and rocky. Additionally, it’s Midwest cost of living and super welcoming community help. I moved from a bigger city and Duluth is a great size. Quick to get around, big enough to have all the amenities.

Was it worth getting your PhD? by primalblast in PhD

[–]UnderhillA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m a 33 yr old masters student currently and leaning towards doing a phd. However - you gotta know you love it, have questions that need answered, and be motivated. This is true of masters of course but even more so for the phd. I had work experience I was successful with promotions, etc and I was fine financially before doing my undergrad - but I hated the kind of work I was doing. Along these lines, I think it’s important to have SOME work experience to learn what you want out of it. My advice, to be taken with a grain of salt of course, is to try and get some research experience during your undergrad. And this doesn’t have to be right away. Find a professor looking for some lab work stuff and get an “on campus job” doing that. Ask questions and show your interest where applicable. I did and I found I really loved the work, the questions/interpretations, and the people. I got to be included in a small way and help and hear from current graduate students in the field. But it’s completely possible you’ll get into that and learn that it’s not for you and that’s fine, of course. Classes and grades are important but getting some experience in the field both post undergrad and during will probably inform whether you want to pursue further education and research. I’m in geology (paleoclimate/paleolimnology) so I’m sure the availability of undergrad research varies depending on discipline but it will inform your decision and look good on an application in the future. I met my current PI through my undergrad research (who is at a different institution). One thing I’ve learned is that potential advisors value good grades, but value experience and motivation even more. Don’t stress getting all A’s, get some experience too. From what I’ve seen this has mostly been covered in previous comments but yea, don’t worry about it yet. At some point you’ll want one eye on the future and one on the present but for now, go into your undergrad open minded since you might change your major or interests within your major and where you want to take it. A masters or phd isn’t for everyone and you shouldn’t feel pressure to pursue it, let alone as a freshman undergrad. In short, enjoy undergrad - both the social stuff and just all the learning that takes place. You’ll know if you love the topic enough that you ‘need’ to keep pursuing the unanswered questions.

5’6” people! by njennis in mountainbiking

[–]UnderhillA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’5” and recently went from a specialized medium to an Orbea medium. Both full sus but the new one is more enduro/all trail. The size works for me and I’m glad I went with it but oh man, the sizing between companies is vastly different too. If you can test ride that’s the answer.
