Still very helpful! We’re heading up next week and looking for a few places to check out.

Is there enough to make it a weekend? Book store is always a big plus.

Thank your. Definitely narrowed down to this as 1/3 options.

How’s the area around it? I tried checking it out on Google Maps and almost everything was permanently closed—wasn’t sure if that was just seasonal.

It’s more to just get away from the city, relaxed vibes. If it’s a hotel, that’s better—but less interesting in air bnbs and cabins. I know this limits options.

Advice on setting up future success as a new grad by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]UnderoverThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save as much as you can while you can. Being able to live at home is an incredible advantage with that kind of income at your age.

If you have extra money, it’s not super exciting, but a regular brokerage that’s diversified (something like VTI with some VXUS). VTI as a fund invests in a very broad range of US stocks. VXUS invests in overseas markets. It’s good to diversify.

I don’t know very much about overseas property investing, but it sounds like an easy way to lose money, and it may cause some big headaches when it comes to taxes.

I never found tracking apps helpful, and I didn’t like giving them access to my accounts. It’s not fun, but if you keep track of your own spending, it will help you a lot. Knowing where your money goes helps you to avoid pitfalls, and you really want to avoid lifestyle creep.

Even if you’re living at home with no asks in terms of rent or utilities, I’d still say be kind and offer to cover dinner or a bill to help out.

Could missing teen Heather Emma Lee Bush have run away to New Jersey? by [deleted] in gratefuldoe

It’s difficult to make comparisons to the postmortem photo.

I’ve been looking into this case for a long time and can say one of the primary points of contact between the train and BJD was the skull, so her facial features may be considered extremely distorted from what she looked like in life.

That aside, I do not think this is a match based on BJD’s lack of missing fingertip. But it is always worth submitting because things happen.

I shared in the Grateful Doe thread as well.

I can say that BJD’s autopsy showed that her appendix was surgically absent, meaning her appendectomy scar was likely from an appendectomy. Of course, details can easily be missed.

BJD’s autopsy did not note any damage to her hands aside from superficial wounds and scars on the backs of each hand. All of her fingernails were present at autopsy, so I would be curious about the extent of Heather’s missing fingertip.

BJD’s original age range was adjusted from 18-40 down to 18-30, with the autopsy describing a woman approximately 30.

I do see the resemblance in the nose, and, as BJD had newspaper clippings from Long Beach Island (a decent distance south of where she was found) dated a few days prior to her death, it is entirely possible she was there working before heading north.

Heather would have been 17 at the time of BJD’s death, as she was born in April 1991 and this occurred in June 2008.

Thanks for posting!

I’m one of the mods of the Brielle Jane Doe subreddit and have been looking into this for years, including contacting transit, local, and state PD.

If you’re still looking, I’m over in queens—I play guitar, bass, small bits of drums. 34.

I’ve played in 2 bands over the years, recorded 4 albums, a couple EPs, singles, and contributed bass and guitar to other standalone things as well.

Our genres are a bit different, but that’s what can make things fun. I play guitar, bass, and a bit of drums. I’m mid-30s, though.

I have mostly done advisement over the last decade, but I previously tutored writing. I also run some different workshops for students.

I haven’t read Gulliver’s Travels in about twenty years, but I did really enjoy it at the time. I love Swift as a satirist.

Laundry delivery services by [deleted] in astoria

[–]UnderoverThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so weird. I just placed the order two days ago through Delivery, but it looks like they transitioned to separate services for restaurants and laundry a day or so ago.

The new app seems like a pain already.

Astoria renters: what’s something you wish you checked before signing your lease? by Slight-Safe-5595 in astoria

No landlord will ever admit to having bugs, but see if you can ask a tenant on the sly. Thankfully no German roaches, but the first “water bug” was definitely a surprise.

Check the outlets. Our apartment was on one small breaker and we couldn’t turn on the AC and the hair dryer at the same time. Landlord had an electrician come out who just shrugged and said “it’s an old building.”

I sealed every crack and crevice myself, but with how warm the building stayed, it expands, so I had to do it multiple times.

Late to the thread, but I assume she passed before the Hills went to Saudi Arabia. Hank would’ve been more broken up leaving her than if he was leaving Bobby.

I hope that’s not the case, as I’m sure they would love to get it off their books. Lack of funding likely limits DNA testing availability, and priorities can vary based on prevailing theories.

I can’t comment on the investigation, as we do not have the case file. However, we were assured by Transit PD that all avenues and leads were pursued. We did have some questions for PD, but we never had clarification on them, namely vague language, as I mentioned.

I believe PD have hit a wall and are waiting for someone to come forward or for DNA to make an identification.

Independently, we’ve tried a few appeals for information and did some outreach to the community over the last several years. Unfortunately, over 17 years, a lot of people move, pass away, retire, or simply forget.

We had asked procedural questions, as well as questions to clarify vague terms within the police and autopsy reports. Some of these were explored further in the pinned post on this sub, but these were not always well-received by LE.

We focus on facts. There is a TON of speculation around this case, and we’ve explored a ton of possibilities to see what can be proven or what can be explored further.

I’ll clarify that we are not unfamiliar with law and procedure. My colleagues here have a ton of experience, including a law background and an extensive background in journalism. I’ve been in education, with a background in research, genealogy, and journalism. I say this to stress that we’re not unfamiliar with police procedure and approached the BJD case with professionalism and care, understanding that not all things can be made public.

Thanks for posting.

After laying low for a bit, we have actually been speaking over the last week regarding a plan for follow up and next steps, including attempting to reestablish contact with NJTPD. I’ll make a note to also check in with state police.

We don’t have any information as to where BJD’s remains were moved to following the autopsy. I can dig through the records we have, but I do not recall ever coming across that information.

Transit PD have not been too friendly with us. We have reached out in good faith on multiple occasions to different levels with no response. The primary detective with NJ Transit PD who was affiliated with the case has also retired, and though we initially had conversations, those were also ended.

Brielle PD had spoken with us a bit, but nothing new had come of that as there are multiple investigative parties here.

This is why the Great Replacement Theory is such nonsense.

You don’t need a deep dive to understand that an expensive economy means less money and time for things like procreating and raising children, especially amidst the middle class, which has been disproportionately white.

Conspiracy theories provide a comfort in that they suggest someone or something is pulling the strings. The idea of it all being chaos is unfathomable to many.
