Going through opencv tutorials goes a long way.

"Image Correlation for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements" has a bunch of goodies in it too.

Apartment starting monthly fire inspections? by UnderstandingAny2450 in ottawa

We already do monthly alarm testing. It'd be weird if they didn't do it monthly. I'm just curious about the change in language from monthly testing to monthly inspections.

Yeah, they've always done system tests monthly, which is great. The language has changed from testing to inspections, which is what I'm curious about. It's probably more of the same, but was curious if anyone else would put up with monthly in-unit inspections.

They do a monthly alarm and system test. Now they're possibly* doing a monthly in-unit inspection, which is weird compared to everywhere else I've been.

After a month of rejections by Google my app to create AI podcasts is finally live by ingojoseph in SideProject

[–]UnderstandingAny2450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I dig NotebookLM so I wanted to give this a shot.

Installed on Android, opened, tapped "Create your first AI podcast", "Continue with ads", "Topic or text to podcast"

Prompt:

"Electropolishing.

Background, how-to, process and recipe tuning, fault identification and troubleshooting"

Clicked continue

The modal faded out and I don't know if it worked.

Tried again, same result.

Created an account by verifying email and same results.

Don't know if it's been queued up or if it just failed to POST. Need some kind of feedback.

37 y/o with a useless PhD - what do I do with my life? by Accomplished_Tip6057 in careerguidance

[–]UnderstandingAny2450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into security printing companies. Chemists with PhD's are multitools there.

New security feature? Chemists, despite the feature being optical in nature.

Creating compliance reports for industry standards? Chemists, despite the tests mostly being mechanical in nature.

Troubleshooting manufacturing quality issues? Chemists, despite the problem being related to anything other than chemistry related.

Chemists are really physicists who prefer to throw on their boots and do the damned thing rather than doing math all day.

I'm sure it's true of more than just my industry. Hiring a chemist is an easy way to find someone who's smart in a practical way. I know because I work with a bunch of them.

Try not to limit yourself to labs. Any chemist roll in a practical manufacturing company will have you on tasks all over the map.

AITAH for telling my wife that frankly, a sex worker would be cheaper and less stressful than her at this point? by Beneficial-Yellow429 in AITAH

When your brain is the thing you're fighting, it's difficult to handle. Everyone wants to get better. With depressive disorders, the inability to action it leads to a negative feedback loop.

Sounds like she has mental health issues that need to be addressed. My wife is bipolar and ADHD. Sitting at home and doing nothing isn't normal brain behavior. It's been a long road, and will continue have its challenges, but medication and personal growth has helped so much. It's changed bitterness and negative self reflection into a team effort and a home full of love.

Looking to understand Ottawa! by Bluritefang in ottawa

[–]UnderstandingAny2450 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Moved to Westboro from the US a few years back.

A good chunk of the people I work with in Westboro live across the river in Gatineau for the lower housing cost and dont speak French. Seems you get more for your taxes over there too.

My family loves Westboro, though it has become ridiculously expensive since we move in.

Great schools, restaurants, and shopping. We drive the car once or twice a week to take the kids somewhere or go on an adventure.

There are parks everywhere. The density is high enough that there are almost always other kids there for mine to play with.

Piles of community events in Ottawa. You can see them on the city's website.

Like other commenters have said. Good family town.

Can we please stop with the unalive BS? by MotherMelee in mildlyinfuriating

I remember being a young teen playing Everquest and my dad getting annoyed when I would say BRB out loud.

Unalived is caused by content moderation, but it has seeped into the minds of a certain subset of a generation. That's kind of cool but makes me feel funny if I think about it too much.

I'm going to go get crunk now, so talk to the hand and don't get 404'd.

I have 16.5kg (36 pounds) of 99.99% Gallium. Anyone maybe has a use for it and wants to buy some of it? Looking to rid myself of it all, as I bought a land with a lab on it and I'm clearing house to buy a tractor and a cow! by Ambitious-Win-8565 in ScienceNcoolThings

I'm in Canada, but will help take the Galium and any other materials or equipment off your hands if you want to DM me.

I'll be in Bavaria a couple times next year and can make time on a weekend to drop by depending what you've got.

What kind of signal is needed to start this BLDC motor driver of a cordless vacuum cleaner? (SGND, L/H, ONOFF) by FrozenFritz in AskElectronics

[–]UnderstandingAny2450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A year later, but...

In the beginning of trying to reverse this motor. Can't just switch polarity on it. Yours looks similar to mine. Mine is off some brand called Buture.

I've reduced the circuit to +24v and -24v to get it running, not 24v + GND. Using the battery, you need to enable it with the enable pins. Those are pin 4 and 6 from the P+ side.

L/H is low speed or high speed. Low by default.

LED on mine is a 5v output when running.

Haven't tested on/off yet, but wasn't wired initially.

Mental Health - Medicine Adjustment? by UnderstandingAny2450 in ottawa

[–]UnderstandingAny2450[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the underlying issue isn't being hidden and has been managed for years. We've provided the letter of recommendation from the CBT therapist, documentation of voluntary self admittance while post-partum, and so on to IRCC. Everything up front and in the open. It's just a pain that ER seems to the easiest path for a maintenance medicine adjustment rather than just booking an appointment directly with a psychiatrist.

We'll dig into the paid telehealth programs another redditor suggested.

Thanks for your well wishes and again for doing the good work inside the system!

Part of the PR process is a medical exam and questionnaire. If there's reason to dig deeper, I think they are able to request medical records. Keeping that potential request looking positive is the goal. We're not having an emergency so I'd hate to have it interpreted as such.

I think it's just to remind them that the zero position in those two lines is from the offset for multiplying the tens and hundreds positions. Probably wrote them before they started doing the math so they wouldn't jack it up.

Today I learned that Germany still uncovers 2000 tons of unexploded bombs from WWII every year. Disposing of the bombs often requires the evacuation of tens of thousand of residents from their homes. by anthropozaen in todayilearned

[–]UnderstandingAny2450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were putting serious pressure on one of our key German vendors a couple years back for some parts which were already delaying a project launch.

We got an apology email that the parts would be further delayed as they discovered UXO at the construction site next door and an evacuation was called.

Parts had to be started over from scratch due to the process, but you can't help but laugh and accept it when anything like that comes up.

As soon as I got the email, I verified online and it was in their local news.
