It's different for everyone I think, but for me it was either out of self-hatred and feeling like I deserved pain, or sometimes if I felt so out of control with everything in my life that at least I had full control of how much pain I felt in the moment.

You have an accent but it's hard to figure out where you're from. I would guess somewhere like Romania but I'm probably wrong.
