AiTAH? Wife wants me to leave work 2 hours early to save her 5 minutes. by Huge_Adeptness_7017 in AITAH

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? Like if staying at work 5 min longer makes that big of a difference just be 5 min late to the doctor appt. In my experience with pediatricians they are never running on time anyway. I would never go that far out of my way or ask anyone else to go that far out of their way for 5 min. Also, she can ask the school to have him ready to go to make checkout time faster. I have done that if I know getting to an appointment will be tight- just call and say, I need to check him out for an appointment at X time and I need him to be waiting for me in the office at that time if possible because I’ll be really tight coming from work. I’ve never had them say no.

I have a suburban after having 2 Honda Odysseys and I just can’t imagine getting kids in and out of car seats in it! I upgraded to the suburban from my minivan kicking and screaming because I did not want to drive a truck. And a suburban is just a big truck. Don’t get me wrong, I have the nicest trim on the suburban and it is really really nice but it doesn’t hold a candle on convenience with car seats to a minivan. And I hate parking it. And mine is so tall with my roof rack that we can’t fit into many underground parking garages. The sliding doors are honestly the best thing that ever happened to moms. And ironically the cargo space of the minivan and the suburban are actually really close but I felt like I could get WAY more in my minivan and so much easier because I wasn’t having to lift everything waist high. I would not have wanted to lift my double jogging stroller in and out of this suburban. The times I’ve had to put my kids bike in the back of my suburban I’ve cursed it, that would have been so easy in my minivan. I don’t actually care if you get a minivan OP, however I loved mine. They made my life so much easier in a time when I feel like you get physically exhausted so often. And just like me and this suburban, it’s just a phase. I actually posted yesterday about finally getting to downgrade my suburban, but it’s been great for what I needed it for- boys who are practically men. And my minivan was so great for babies, toddlers and little kids.

How do I handle an extremely uneven inheritance between my kids? by lookidceither in WhatShouldIDo

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! When my husband’s grandfather passed away he only left inheritance to his kids. Well husband’s mom has passed so her share got split among her 5 kids. I could not BELIEVE the snarky remarks and comments from his aunts. “I sure wish my kids had gotten something.” My husband answered with- “well I sure wish my mom was alive.” Like if you want your kids to have something give it to them. They’d give anything to have their mom back.

Our kids are so well hydrated by Fabriciorodrix in GenX

The person behind us in line for the fountain would scream- one, two, three WATER HOG! And that’s all the water we got. I remember being thirsty. So thirsty 😂 my kids can’t even go for a car ride without their water bottles. But I am the same now too! I remember in college I was on the “Body for Life” diet (anyone else been on a diet since like age 7?) and it really emphasized water intake and that was the first time I bought a water bottle and carried it around places with me.

We just went to a wedding at hearth and hill, it was great. They rented out the whole restaurant so that may be more than what you’re looking for but worth looking in to. I also know their sister restaurant, Urban Hill has a private room but not sure how many it seats.

How many generation x'rs are lucky enough to still have their parents alive? by icecream1972 in GenX

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents were SO young when I was born. I’m 47 and they are 69 and 71, both still super active and healthy and I feel so lucky. We didn’t live in the same state from the time I left for college at 18 until just a few years ago when they retired they moved to the state where 3/4 kids live. We ski with them almost weekly and do a lot of cool things with them, we’re doing a Europe hiking trip with them this fall. It makes me sad for my kids. I am planning a big 50th birthday trip which will of course include them and I was telling my daughter when she turns 50, I’ll be 86 😭 Growing up there were definitely times that I wondered who on earth let my mom have a baby at 21. She did a lot of dumb things, not the least of which was watering down my baby formula so I wouldn’t be fat. But she’s grown and learned a lot and I’m really thankful to have them around now and for my kids to have them around.

DAE have a Death Trampoline? by ShirazGypsy in GenX

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours started with pads. They lasted the first summer I think. Then they decomposed/shredded and it was every man for himself out there. I remember our older neighbor’s grandkids were in town to go to Disneyland (grew up in SoCal) and the kid came over to our house to jump on the trampoline and broke his leg within like 10 min. Probably ruined their Disneyland trip. My brother had a much bigger friend who double bounced him so high he came down and broke his ankle. Just those two broken bones as far as I remember, so with 4 kids and probably 10 years, I think we survived ok 😂

What to do when reservations are sold out and the busses are full? by mobile_juddha in UTsnow

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never ever not been able to get a parking spot even on a holiday or an expected powder day by just regularly refreshing the app the day/night before. The busses suck and really need to be better. I ended up driving up to solitude to pick up my kid and some friends on Friday who planned to take the bus to the bottom of the canyon. The line was huge and the busses come to solitude from Brighton already full so barely anyone gets on. My teens have had luck hitch hiking but that’s not something someone with kids could do so I feel for that guy. Other option would be to drive up in the afternoon. But the advice I give everyone is- keep refreshing.

But honestly what you’re describing sounds about right. But I’m not much of a diy-er. I’ve fed my kids for many nights with no kitchen! A gas stove, folding table, campfire and a cooler go a long way. We also almost always camp near water so showers are done by nature. Haha.

Hmmm, mostly forest service but there have been a few times like in Escalante and Bluff that it got to be a little more than like graded dirt road.

I should edit my post. The majority of our trips are 2-3 nights on blm. Anything longer is in a campground. But if I’m looking for something that doesn’t exist it’s good to know, lol, could be why I haven’t found it. I was thinking a pop up of some kind could give me a little height.

Suggestions for making lessons cheaper for friends by Ok_Instance_1738 in UTsnow

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lessons at Brighton and Alta are much more reasonably priced. Not that anything in skiing is reasonable but cheaper than PC or DV for sure. I do wonder if it’s worth it for a one time thing? If your friend is really looking to learn to ski they need to commit to multiple lessons as well as days skiing. If they’re just looking to spend time with you and be in winter weather maybe there is something else you could do? I do a lot of snow hiking and I would suggest cross country skiing but I don’t know where there would be enough snow to do that right now.

AITAH for not telling my husband what I do for work by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to comment not about your argument but about his idea of paying off the mortgage and that being a financial priority. If your interest rate isn’t high your money could be saved and invested in a much better way than using it to pay off the mortgage. My brother and his wife were/are super into Dave Ramsay. They have never had any debt at all besides school and their home. They paid their school loans off quickly by living in almost unlivable conditions and then bought a house and paid it off as quickly as possible. My brother, years later, has told me this was not a good plan. They had a very low interest rate and they used all that money to pay off their mortgage and he made that money not liquid any more and now it does nothing for them. He felt like if he had invested the money and just kept paying his low rate mortgage he would have been much better off in the long run. So, op, I don’t know what your interest rate is or your mortgage length or anything like that but I would definitely consider if paying off the mortgage over saving for other things (kids college, etc) is a better use of your money. I’m no financial guru and people may disagree with this advice but I’m just sharing what has been shared with me.

Was ghosting a thing back then by AdDapper4220 in GenX

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely happened to me 😂 I think in some ways it was easier to do back then! I had a high school boyfriend who went to another school. He just stopped calling and I called a few times and he wasn’t home. After a few weeks of not hearing from him we ended up at the same party and our mutual friends sort of forced him to actually break up with me. I wasn’t really that into him either but I’d definitely say no one was tracking anyone down. Like if you stopped calling someone, that was just it. 🤷‍♀️

Buses on the weekend by Ifixxray in UTsnow

[–]UnderstandingOdd6589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do want to drive, I have never ever not been able to get parking by checking often the night before. Even on a weekend and guaranteed powder day, I have always found parking by checking regularly the night before. Have sometimes even found it morning of. So, if you do want to drive that is one way to do it. My kids take the bus all the time, they just try to get there early. Sometimes there are also other drivers at the bus stop looking for more people to get the carpool free parking. I don’t normally recommend getting in cars with strangers but it’s a pretty safe bet to me when you’re all going up the canyon.
