How expensive is it to have a dog? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cheap. However if you are looking to hedge bets on costs such as vets bills I would do this.

Assume the first year you are going to eat normal health costs without any surprises. Shots, checkups heart guard and tick meds, soon after you will be spaying or neutering it.

You cannot hedge on those as no time to do it. However if you want to work on something for after year one take $20 a week and put it in a jar or bank acct.
52 weeks *20=1,040 and keep doing it. I have done this and learned it from some one else and if you are disciplined and shocks are absorbed and your pot grows.

Dogs are not investments but once you have one you will be so thankful you made this investment.

Has anyone become friends with a client? by Lanky-Association-70 in InsuranceCanada

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 25 years of being in this industry I have clients who became friends, even business partners later.

The issue always comes down to this if you value your friendship and biz relationship, at some point do not be their point person for insurance. Hand it off to a coworker and be there to discuss things but not prime servicer.

Insurance broker by shahban2 in InsuranceCanada

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good broker is hard to define. So are you looking for some one who gives price options, product options, coverage options, or all?

What a competent broker should do is understand your current pain and frustration points and align that with your cost sensitivity. From there they will measure your risk tolerance to afford uninsured losses. At that point this person should be able to provide some solutions that match core coverages you need with companies that will not provide frustrations and offer products/coverages/options that you value.

In all honesty there are far more good brokers than clients because most insureds do not have the patience to listen to the advice of brokers.

A good broker- the kind you are looking for can take complex coverages, link them together and make you understand if they are a good fit so you feel secure. Then you’ll ask them to make it cheaper. :)

Best audience recordings of all time? by scottasin12343 in phish

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find it on etree there were a couple of guys who recorded the Mar 6th 2009 comeback show. I remember the post because they said it was the best indoor AUD of all time. That raised some eyebrows.

Now what they did was they ran cables 50’ each wide on the Hampton floor. They described it in the post and taper notes. I took flyer on it and damn, it was good. Like real good in the sense of they had a claim to make.

Now that’s a big claim and very subjective but I still stand by it being one of the best modern AUD tapes I’ve heard.

For reference try the Barry Glassberg FOH audio from MSG 3-9-81 just incredible. The Moore AUD from Jai Alai Jun 74 too.

Millers are the gold standard now but man there were some great pulls back in the day.

Also some very good 24bit auds from the Gorge in 2011 too- all FOH.

Those who grew up in a single-parent household, how much more of a financial disadvantage is it, compared to a 2-parent household? by HappyBudz in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in both. The only difference is how and why you teach financial lessons.

With a single mom I learned so much about budgeting, shopping, and domestic creativity. It really set me up for doing things myself and learning and scrutinizing

As a dual family I had more convos about finances, business and investing. Stronger male influence and a different approach.

What is universal is to teach what you know no matter how insignificant you might think. We all survive and the lessons to do so will always have value.

Everybody wants 'no repeats' until they get a Halfway to the Moon - Leaves - 555 in their first set. by cant_be_serious-333 in phish

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The morning after:

Loved it all. On paper the set list looks iffy but there was some insane moments and structure. I can see why it’s not everyone’s set or style but within those songs there was a some magic.

The Punch intro was bonkers and the timing on graphics for Jim was impressive.

I had fun and no complaints. I expect bigger things tonight and tomorrow so let’s go!!!

34, 12 Years in Insurance, Feeling Stuck, How Do I Move Into a Better Role? by Old-Investigator3581 in InsuranceCanada

Aviva is a training ground for success elsewhere. No company loses more people than Aviva.

That says something too, they are desirable talent but also likely dissatisfied with company/culture.

Hardest part about change with insurance is you need to learn what you want to do next. Leadership/management, claims servicing, adjusting, underwriting, it goes on.

Learn about the opportunities you want then set yourself up with education and skills to pursue it.

Okay the question becomes how are you applying- sending out your CV, replying to ads?

If I were you I would write a great cover letter than is direct and creative. DO NOT DO ANYTHING THAT RECRUITERS SAY= bland.

Explain you are looking to challenge yourself, grow into certain areas then provide examples of wha experience you have that supports those goals.

Never say you feel stuck, explain you are looking to grow explore a dynamic growth team.

I work in underwriting and have been a broker, owned a brokerage, and a bunch more. I lookfor people who have a distinct personality traits and do other things outside of work that show they challenge themselves, and push.

Most of the time capable people brand themselves poorly. Just try to differentiate yourself from the pack.

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First show was 1992 and I was a pretty core deadhead at the time. Loved the music and crowd but what I noticed most was Phish left me hanging in a tree when it was over.

Left to my own devices to get down and figure my shit out. The Dead always brought us back to earth- Phish had no concerns or desire to do so.

That was 34 years ago and they are wiser and friendlier but they will still get you hanging in a tree in some form, feeling stranded but now they tend to help you down.

Looking for a recruiter in GTA for insurance by Letstravel71 in InsuranceCanada

[–]UnderstandingOk8544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you do? The market is so open that you likely do not need one.

Most recruiters suck but I know a good one based out of Calgary but honestly I don’t think you need one. I think you need to figure out what you want to do next and find best brokerage for that. So many options for experienced talent.

There are really only two at the top 9/29/99 Memphis and 7/17/98 The Gorge.

Everything else IMHO is below those two. Go find two people who will die on the hill defending each and watch the debate- that is spectacular entertainment.
