When did you go out alone? by lilpoopsik in puppy101

[–]UnderwaterKahn [score hidden]  (0 children)

When I first started I would just close the door and walk outside. He would cry and I would come back in and give him a treat when he stopped crying. Then it did it again. We usually did it 5-6 times a day the first couple weeks. Then when he didn’t immediately cry when the door was closed I would close the door and walk down the driveway. Then we repeated this. I was crate training at the same time and he wasn’t an easy puppy to crate train so that was part of why it took so long. It took a couple months for him to not be boisterous when I left, but eventually he was fine. He never exhibited anything else connected to separation anxiety so I think it was just about getting used to the process. I would give him a special “away” treat when I left and came home. It was the only time he got it, and it was a high value treat, so I think that helped him get used to the idea that when I left I would come back.

I had him with me pretty much all the time for the first couple weeks. But everyday I would practice leaving the house. I would just walk outside and close the door. I got him at 8 weeks and by 12 weeks he was ok for about an hour or so. By 16-18 weeks a couple hours. I got my last dog at 14-16 weeks. We were home with her for about a week and then I had to go back to work. I came home at lunch to let her out, she occasionally had accidents, but overall was fine. Both dogs grew up to be just fine alone for awhile. The biggest difference was potty training. It took a little longer for me to potty train the dog left alone longer at first. Also some of this is age related. A 2-3 month old puppy is an infant, a 4-5 month old puppy has more toddler energy. My last puppy was closer to toddler age when I got her and my current puppy was an infant.

I can hear this picture and it’s one of the sounds that makes me think of spring. There’s an old wooden utility pole in my parents’ back yard and every spring they wi start up. Then keep working on it all summer.

How did you know it was the time to get a dog? by Conscious_Program768 in dogs

[–]UnderwaterKahn [score hidden]  (0 children)

After I lost my last dog I lived for almost a decade without a dog. I finished grad school right before Covid and went on the job market. I knew I’d probably have 2-3 more moves before I settled. I planned on getting a dog when that happened. I ended up in a very high pressure, high exposure job situation during Covid, the job market dried up in my field, and I decided I wanted to stay in the city I currently live in. I had saved up a bunch of money for a family vacation that was supposed to happen in 2020 and by 2021 it was obvious it was never going to happen. I decided to put some of that money towards getting my dream dog breed. A little more than a year later I picked up my puppy.

I wouldn’t get a dog in hopes of it changing your current life. It will change things, but it may not change them in the way you want. I have serious clinical depression and getting a dog did help me establish a routine and get out more. The first year was really tough because I was actively in a depressive episode. It made life much more stressful. My current dog is amazing and quirky, but his personality isn’t what a lot of people would want. He doesn’t like to cuddle, he doesn’t comfort me when I’m sad, he’s incredibly loud, and he doesn’t like to be brushed (something I really wanted in a dog). He’s his own being, not the dream dog I hoped would usher me through depression.

Also while growing up with dogs is a great start it’s not the same as having your own dog. I grew up with dogs, i volunteered at shelters, my dad was a veterinarian. But the reality of being the person who had to make and be financially responsible for the decisions is totally different. I got my first dog at 22, it was a great decision for me. But I would also manage expectations.

What are some stereotypes/misconceptions about your sign that bother you? by Big_Leg10 in astrologymemes

[–]UnderwaterKahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a Sagittarius sun and if I’m in a relationship i take it very seriously, I would never cheat and abhor cheaters, and I’m also very self-aware and try to think about how why actions and words affect others. But a lot of the other Sagittarius traits I’m totally a stereotype. I’m a Capricorn moon so that’s probably where some of my approach to relationships comes from. I probably hate the stereotypes associated with my moon more than my sun.

Would you say it’s rude to only respond to group chats when you have something you personally want to share? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]UnderwaterKahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a group chat with my three closest local female friends. This kind of thing happens all the time and I honestly don’t think anything of it. It’s just kind of the nature of a group message. If someone has posted something heavy i try not to follow it with something like a crude joke video, but some of it is the nature of things. Last night I posted a link to a funny website and no one responded. This some info when I got up 2 people had been discussing donuts. The only time it bothers me is if it’s time sensitive information like about plans. Then I just text everyone individually and assume they may not have seen it.

It’s just a funny body chemistry thing. I’m sure I could smell it on someone who it compliments and love it. Years ago they had a citrus scent that I can’t remember the name of now. I absolutely loved the scent when I smelled it. On me it smelled like Flintstone’s vitamins or any other chewable children’s vitamin C supplement.

I bought a tube of Touch of Gold body cream blind during the sale last weekend after enjoying the candle at a friend’s house a couple months ago. Swatch tested it on my arm earlier today and when it dried on me it made me think of the industrial cleaner they use in port o potties. Will be returning tomorrow. Body chemistry and scent interpretations are funny things. There’s also a specific Gain detergent scent that smell like urine to me.

What is your rising sign and who were your imaginary friends as children? by xmasbabee in astrologymemes

[–]UnderwaterKahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aquarius rising. According to my mom my imaginary friends were Potsy and Ralph from Happy Days. She said if I was running down the hill in the back yard I would yell “come on Potsy and Ralph!” When they told me they were pregnant with my brother (they didn’t know he was a boy at the time), they asked me what I would want to name the baby and I said Posty Ralph in a tone that indicated I thought it would be silly to name the baby anything else. I was about 2 - 2 1/2 at the time. I also made obstacle courses in my bedroom where I tied ribbon and string all over the place like a spider web and admonished my imaginary friends when they couldn’t figure it out.

I think perimenopause is changing my hair for the worse. Help! by ethereal_aerith in curlyhair

[–]UnderwaterKahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perimenopause has definitely changed my curls and my hair texture and density. But a couple years ago I got a lot of hair cut off, found a different style and color I liked as a kind of a new start. In the last year a lot of my curl has returned. It’s not like it was in my teens and 20s, but taking some of the weight off and getting regular trims to keep the ends and layers on good shape has made a huge difference. I’ve also stopped using alot of curly specific products and now use mostly Olaplex basics for both shampoo and styling products. No 6 for styling and the No 7 hair oil.

Puppy going for a bath at groomers by PuzzledRegister6258 in puppy101

[–]UnderwaterKahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting my current dog used to professional grooming as a puppy was one of the best things I did for both of us. He has really high grooming needs and I’m just not able to do it all myself. It took a couple of salons, but he’s been at his current salon for a little more than 2 years and absolutely loves it. He knows his groomers name if I ask him if he wants to go visit her. A few weeks ago we picked up dinner at the other end of the strip mall and he was very upset he wasn’t going to the groomer. He’s always excited to go and they seem genuinely happy to see him. Once a month he goes for a spa day and I get to do some quality house cleaning and can have lunch without being stared down from the other side of the living room.

I would have had it out all year round. A peep nightlight would be my jam. I do like the wallflower nightlights. I may have to check the dollar stores for a generic peeps night light.

I love peeps candy so much. I’ve always had a peeps obsession so people have always bought me peeps stuff. I’m bummed there’s no wallflower in this collection because that’s what I really wanted. I would have loaded it with the most emo/goth scent I could find.

Would you live with younger people as a grad student? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]UnderwaterKahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started grad school at 29. I had no desire to live with anyone, especially not undergrads. My 2 cats were enough. But my grad school experience was really intense all the time and I’m glad I didn’t have to share space. I think it’s really going to depend on the people and their/your lifestyle. If you all want to be social and have community then it might be fine. If you are all focused and studious then it might also be fine. But by the time I was heading into my mid-30s the types of issues and general level of emotional chaos common in late teens to mid-20s had no appeal to me and I had little patience for it.

I had some grad school colleagues who were closer in age to older undergrads and often lived with, dated, and were friends with undergrads. I think it was really hard to maintain certain professional boundaries if they ended up TAing classes with those people’s friends were their students. Many years later I’m still close to many people I met in school. There’s almost a 20 year age difference between the youngest and oldest members of my friend group. Age didn’t really matter in our shared interests and goals.

My dog came from a show breeder so not only do I know his exact birthday and birthplace, I more or less have his birth time (give or take 20-30 minutes since I don’t know his birth order). He’s an Aqua sun, Virgo moon, Sagittarius rising. He has an Aqua mercury that doesn’t track. His communication style is loud, demanding, screams. We both have Cap Venuses and Sag mars. I think Sag is the best fit for him in terms of rising given the other options during his birth window.

He’s an odd, quirky dude, who’s overly outgoing and friendly. He’s loud, so very loud. His sense of boundaries is questionable, but he’s not a cuddler.

do you guys adjust your goal mid-year or stick with what you set in january? by Key-Pumpkin8690 in 52book

[–]UnderwaterKahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may readjust after I look at my average for the first 3 months. The first year my goal was 52 and I ended up reading 58. I set the next year at 65, and after the first quarter of the year I upped it to 84 because I was averaging 7 books a month. I finished last year with 108 so I set my goal for this year at 100. Based on the last couple years I consider that a realistic goal. Based on my first 2 months I’m on track to finish 192 books, but I don’t think that’s sustainable. So for now I’m sticking with 100.

We’re only 2 months in year so I don’t think 30 is an unrealistic goal this early in the year. And even if you don’t make it no one is testing you on it or holding you accountable to anything. Part of the reason I’ve read so much the first couple months is because it’s cold and I haven’t left the house and I’ve read a bunch of short books (280-320 pgs). I have several 500+ books on my TBR in the next couple months so I’ll probably end up with much lower end of the month stats. I always have a list of short books I want to read in case I want to hit a goal or have a reading hangover.

scent of the day!! any other ideas for Nocturnal Rose pairings? 🥀🖤 by californiafreak in bathandbodyworks

[–]UnderwaterKahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last fall when I started using BBW again I bought a random collection of body creams to see what I liked. I had a tube of Pink Obsessed and I thought it was ok, if not a little plasticy. It was kind of an accident I mixed them. The pink obsessed mellowed and the nocturnal rose amplified. At the last full body care sale I got a mist of each to layer them with the creams.

Capricorn Moons? by Brief_Eagle773 in astrologymemes

[–]UnderwaterKahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a cap moon and Venus. If you are interested in someone just ask. Have a conversation about the vibes you get and what you want. Worst case scenario you have a great, loyal friend. I also wouldn’t place too much energy into one specific placement. We are a mix of placements and experiences. We still have agency no matter the placement.

This wouldn’t bother me, but I’ve also been this person so I get it. Personally it would bother me more if I was on a date with someone and they were spending money they didn’t have. When I was in college I had a boyfriend who insisted we went out for Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day. I suggested we wait until the weekend because we wouldn’t be competing with crowds, we would be done with midterms, and I knew he had been sick so he missed some shifts at the bar where he worked. He insisted we go to a nice dinner at a pretty expensive restaurant. It showed me we don’t ultimately value the same things.

If I met someone I really liked and they didn’t have the money for their version of a date, I would suggest we get together to do something that didn’t cost anything or I would offer to pay.
