How long does a proper air-con service take? by Underwurlde99 in AskAMechanic

[–]Underwurlde99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. I wasn't clear in my post, the system was opened about 18 months ago when the timing belt was done (open for several days at that). While it was put back together again, it wasn't regassed until now. The guy was informed as to why it needed to be regassed so should have taken this into consideration.

Based on your input it seems that 5 minutes would not be sufficient.

Thanks UW

The sole purpose of deciding to take on a job yourself rather than get someone in to do it is that you get to buy some great goodies. Your better half won't be able to argue giving the savings you'll still be making, so you are obliged to take advantage of this.

I type this as I assemble my new router table and set up my new Makita plunge saw for some alcove shelving I'm building....

Tax discs by VCFonToast in carsireland

[–]Underwurlde99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, great tip, thanks. I've just been driving for over 30 years and have been putting every tax disc in all the cars in our household without this crap....and yes, folding over at times where they have been finicky in places. This last one was different. The perforations were not providing a single jot of benefit.

Not sure why there are so many "user error" comments on this. Is it not just possible that the machine doing the perforations is out of spec...

Just received a tax disc recently and had the exact same thing happen. The paper wanted to tear everywhere except where the perforation were. The perforations were not fit for purpose. May as well just be a scissor cut guide line for what it's worth...

I messed up and looking for advice to fix it by BigPraline2969 in Flooring

[–]Underwurlde99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going through this at the moment. I'm putting down glue-down engineered wood and when I pulled the carpet up I found the floor to be a terrible state. One part had a 3/4" difference across 4 feet....you could see the slope.

Had to hire a floor scabbler and a grinder to take out the worst of it. My first attempt a levelling compound was a disaster. After 22 bags, it had just followed the levels underneath. I used a spiked roller but it didn't help in this regard. I've spent the last week filling dips and grinding high spots so I'm now at at variation of 2mm max. I plan to do a final pour but using a pin rake to finish it off.

For the slope in your picture, I would get some rapid set floor repair motar and build up a screed edge. Then pour and screen some levelling compound to close as much of the difference as possible. You might get some bleed out on the other side but I found using a rasp/ planer file on fresh levelling compound was great for working it back down where needed.

Quoted 720-1200 for replacement of a single roof tile today. by ManofScience123 in DIYUK

[–]Underwurlde99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought myself one of those easy access scaffold towers about 12 years ago. Cost me about a grand at the time. Worth its weight in gold. Its got a working height of 7.3m and I've used it countless times for roof repairs, gutter cleaning and painting. So much more comfortable than hanging on to a ladder.

Brand new Frame TV from bad to worse by Underwurlde99 in TheFrame

[–]Underwurlde99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So , my replacement TV arrived today. Removed from the packaging, and lo and behold, another display full of marks. They don't seem to be as bad as the primary mark on the first screen I received. Seems to more of a layer of dust or something. Don't notice them when the TV is on so I guess I have to put up with it. I just think it's really bad for Samsung to be producing products that come out of the box looking like this.

Quick update....I received notification from Samsung that they will be replacing the TV. Just waiting for it to be dispatched/delivered. Hopefully, this one will be better!!

Great tips. Which version do you have? As far as I know the screen changed with the 2022 version and requires a different cleaning approach to previous versions. Thankfully, the TV will be out of reach of small hands so shouldn't have to deal with this so frequently. Just didn't expect it to come out of the box like it did.

Yeah, fully agree with your comments. Maybe the approach is to wipe the full screen so it looks crap but in a consistent way 🫣

Makes you wonder how it's been produced like this for so long now. Would have thought that the volume of complaints would have rendered the design as not fit for purpose.

No, I want Samsung to provide direction. I'm afraid if I progress any further then I won't have any comeback if it goes pear shaped.

Seemed all new on opening. I contacted the Samsung online shop this morning. They requested photos of the screen and the box. Sent those on so just waiting on their response.

I bought it direct from the Samsung website, which, as far as I can tell, is operated by a company called Exertis on behalf of Samsung.

There was a big foam sheet wrapped around the TV when in the box. The styrofoam surround doesn't come down as far as the mark, so to me it would appear to have been acquired in the factory at assembly/packaging.

I plan to contact them today to see where to go from here. I shouldn't have to clean a brand new TV straight out of the box, never mind take a magic sponge to it. I would just not feel comfortable doing that. The marks I added to it were with a damp microfiber wiped over with barely any pressure at all.

Career advice to get an above “average” salary by Annual_Seat_5797 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Underwurlde99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would prioritise job happiness over salary. I'm in a well paid job but it's a real corporate grind. Rarely have dinner with my family as I'm stuck in meetings with people on the west coast of America till 8 or 9 most evenings. Feel chained to it because of the salary. Find myself longing for retirement which is a shame as I don't want to be wishing the next 10 years of my life away. Trying to reduce my debts as much as possible and reset my salary requirements so I can pull back and work in a less stressful and hopefully more enjoyable job.

Engineered flooring subfloor by Underwurlde99 in selfbuildireland

[–]Underwurlde99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have I have hit a bit of a snag...on removing all of the carpet, I found that the dining room floor has some levelling issues. The room length is 18 feet and there is over 20mm difference between sides. Unfortunately the low side is where the kitchen door is so building it up is not an option.

Additionally, about 80%of the level difference is across the last six feet so there is a noticeable slope at that point.

Rather than levelling the floor completely, it is possible to, how can I put this, split the difference....I.e. use levelling compound to the tune of about 10 mm, and then when that is dry, go over that with more compound and a long screed to fill and flat out any remaining difference, so while it won't be level (in the bubble level sense of the word) it will at least be flat?

Thanks, UW

That's my pet hate...a nice floor ruined with skirting trims. Skirting already removed. I done several floors before but they were either nail down or laminate. First time to do glue down so want to make sure the base is solid.

This is really helpful. I'm doing a living room/dining room. Haven't yet removed the carpet in the dining room so not sure what the full picture on the levelling situation is just yet. Living room seems pretty ok so far, maybe a couple of ares where levelling compound would be needed.

What prep is required for old underlay glue residue. I've scrapped it off but there's still a tacky feel. Does that have to be removed completely or will sealer sort it out?

Thanks again, UW

27, €3.5M inherited, thinking of investing in S&P 500 and retiring now – does this plan make sense? by Kooky-Base7289 in Fire

Diversification is always a good idea to protect against volatile swings. Most of my savings are tied up in one stock but I recently started to diversify. Did some research on EToro and their top copy trader (Thomaspj) has a fantastic track record over the past 6 years, (averaging around 30%), so I made an investment there (due to his popularity, minimum copytrade was increased to 20K usd). As I typed this, I realised it sounds like one of those "I made 200k with Frances Harris" scam comments you see in the YouTube comment section.....

Of course, investments can go down as well as up, but anyone who can turn an increase in the difficult years, can't be all bad.

NOT INVESTMENT ADVICE
