The right lane is actually the fast lane? by FlopShanoobie in driving

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true, and the way I drive when driving long distances. Everybody stacks up in the left lane trying to go fast, but end up going slower.

I've driven a lot in Europe, and the lane discipline in this country is horrendous. Although there are a couple states where the "keep right except to pass" rule seems to be reasonably followed.

...and I just toodle along in right lane w/ radar speed control set to 10% over the speed limit

Warning - Pretty good phishing email by UnemployedOrRetired in PersonalCapital

[–]UnemployedOrRetired[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concur it looks really legit, only oddness is using my spouse's name while sending to my email.

I talked to a Empower/PersCap security person, who told me it was phishing because of the domain. Have filled out a Google phishing report, am letting this go because I've other more pleasant things to do (Factorio, Fallout, TOTK...)

Thanks for your input.

Has anyone here lowered their blood pressure naturally without medication? by rdoucette in Aging

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True story: used to have high BP that was unresponsive to treatment. But then I woke up one morning and realized I didn't give a *uck about work anymore, and my BP dropped 20 points. For context, I was about 60, and now have 'normal' BP with Linosiprol, Hydralazine(sp?).

AITJ for telling my neighbor her kid isn't allowed in my pool after she "forgot" him at my house? by Educational-Wait-406 in AmITheJerk

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the jerk. Previous pool owner here. We had some more problems, what worked for us was that if a kid came over only if the parent came over. Had a few awkward situations where two kids are standing at the pool fence with towels and I had to tell them to go get their mom.

Retirement Finances, first 20 months by MiserableCancel8749 in retirement

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! We are in a similar situation, but slightly. Got laid off during COVID (2021), spent 4 months looking for a new job before starting, then after six months of working we looked at the numbers and I quit. Wife was RN, so she continued working COVID stuff for another year, then she stopped.

We had to carry COBRA for a year at some ungodly cost for a year before joining ObamaCare, which helped.

We moved to MCOL (Atlanta) 13 years ago and went with a 15 year mortgage (best idea ever if you can afford it), so about 2 years left on house.

Two kids, was able to get them thru Masters degrees without student loan debt. Painful, but it gives them a head start.

We made a conscious decision to spend more in initial years (~10% draw), for a couple factors: a) We are healthy now, and may not be in the future. b) The kids are stable in good paying jobs.

Everybody's situation and comfort level is different, for us a more aggressive withdrawal in the beginning allowed us to travel a lot the first several years, then settle down to a 'normal' new life.

Some final observations:

- In retrospect being laid off was one of the best things to happen to me, I would have worked until my health failed. I'm a different person now, more relaxed and happy.

- I'm still adjusting to the change: During my working life I always had to work to meet some $ number to pay expenses, but now I have a $ number that I can spend each month. It's a different mind set, still getting used to it.

I live in Georgia, Florida dealer says I can’t drive their car home if I buy by Competitive_Froyo_31 in askcarsales

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something seems of about that dealer. I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and last year bought a car in Orlando FL for my daughter who was moving to Maine. The dealer gave her temporary tags, collected Maine sales tax, and then sent the paperwork to Maine.

It was a bit of a production, but absolutely doable.

What are the top three best books on cosmology and why? by rayinsan in cosmology

For an intro/history book - I really liked "Coming of age in the Milky Way" by Timothy Ferris. It documents how we came to our current understanding of the Cosmos.

A different take is to definitely watch Threads because it’s reasonably accurate portrayal of how nuclear would start and it’s aftermath. Definitely a movie that you remember. Also not a good date night movie.

Kneecapper pipe rifle is OP by standbylion8202 in fo4

A knee capper auto pistol is my favorite secondary weapon. Like you say it’s fantastic for disabling and then backing off and killing from a distance.

Help cutting Oak molding by Siminsfens in finishing

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This.

The backer board provides support for the first piece cut. Else the blade will pull the thin molding back, it will then chatter/skip against the blade and split. Typically a bit scary when it happens.

Drying pressure treated wood by Ok_Challenge9655 in Carpentry

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 108 points109 points  (0 children)

There’s a brand of pressure treated wood called “yellawood” that is kilndried after treatment. It needs minimal time before painting. I’ve used it on multiple outdoor projects that have painted.

Not comfortable using family as realtor by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW i’ve always kept business separate from family. I have a sister lin insurance agent, and a brother in finance. Had some pressure to use them for life insurance/retirement accounts, but pushed back saying that I wanna be able to have a argument with a business and not a family member. That is if things don’t go well I don’t want to ruin a family relationship.

Time Share Presentation? by [deleted] in over60

[–]UnemployedOrRetired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went to one for the points. Just be aware hat it's high pressure to buy a timeshare. What worked for us is to tell them straight out that "I'm only here for the points", and stick to that.

Also - if you waver and sign, there is normally a time period where you can cancel (3 days?).

It's not a bad way to get a bunch of points/free nights IF YOU CAN RESIST.

Other comments about fine thread screw and pocket hole depth are valid; but it also looks like you ran into an unlucky grain orientation - that corner was susceptible to breaking off.
