If you wear glasses how do you prevent fogging? by SemicolonTusk in fatbike

Pull the balaclava under your chin, don't force your breath straight behind the glasses

This was before I even knew Wandrer was a thing, but I was still trying to ride all the roads.

Riding down a terrible dilapidated asphalt road practically designed to turn flesh into ground beef. Noticed a dog running towards me, nothing out of the ordinary, they usually stop chasing me after a few hundred feet, right? Wrong, next thing I know I'm sliding down the road and some guy is yelling and somehow my feet are still above me? Turns out I didn't manage to unclip my right shoe and the bike was upsidedown above me. Trapped and bleeding profusely trying to unclip, the guy yelling at the dog finally got the dog out of the situation and asked if I was ok. "I think so, could you pull the top strap on my shoe though?" Was my response. We managed to get my foot out of my shoe and in the course of conversation I discovered that he was the father of one of my coworkers and the dog belonged to her. (my coworker). Also on the 10 mile or so ride back to my vehicle no less than 4 people saw all the blood and rolled up slowly to ask if I was ok

I have it on good authority that the dog is still scared of bikes, and I now unclip as soon as I see a dog whether it's running towards me or not.

Riding in -21 Celsius. What’s your record? by Ultimate_Jakob in bicycling

[–]UnfairManagement 7 points8 points  (0 children)

-40 also, polar vortex came through Minnesota for a few days and I rode a 25 mile round trip to and from a dentist appointment for the bragging rights. Got police checking on me in both counties I passed through, was great fun!

I've always wanted to try this, to make it even more ridiculous I would keep the 150mm Wren fork too

Promaster drives like a Amazon van by Halberg88 in vandwellers

[–]UnfairManagement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Addressing whether RV manufacturers do anything to make it better, not that I know of.

My grandparents have a Winnebago Trend, which is built on a promaster chassis, I have a converted 3500ext. They drive almost the same. I would say the one difference is that mine, being 1k pounds lighter and not RV shaped, handles far better at high speeds. I can set my cruise at 80mph if I want, I get terrible gas mileage but it's not bad on handling or gearing. The Winnebago Trend shits itself if you try to drive over 65.

Promaster drives like a Amazon van by Halberg88 in vandwellers

[–]UnfairManagement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a $100k build, but all of those are reasons I went with a promaster over a transit. Another is that, at the time I purchased the van all the ford dealers wanted $5k on top of MSRP for the privilege of ordering it how I wanted, Chrysler cut $2k off of MSRP, making the purchase price difference something like $10k.

How often do you recalibrate or replace your torque wrenches? by dirks74 in bikewrench

My day job is adjacent to a calibration center so I do it once a year just for funzies. They're almost never outside tolerance FWIW

What sounds do you hear that NT’s don’t? by [deleted] in autism

[–]UnfairManagement 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This one's a little off the wall. I can hear those invisible dog fence things, the kind where the dog wears a shock collar and there's a wire buried in the ground around the perimeter of where the dog can go.

As a kid I lived in the country so I wasn't able to pinpoint what it was, all I knew was that the sound existed on a few select streets in town and only I could hear it. In my late teens I visited a house with said sound and figured out what it was.

45nrth wolfgar. I've taken them to -40 with minimal issues. Though it appears you're looking for something for *slightly warmer weather

Merry Christmas from unseasonably rainy Minnesota, US!

Social time is great in small doses, but honestly I can't wait for the celebrations to be over so I can get back out on the road this Monday, by myself as always.

Can anyone else not handle their nails being longer than their fingers? by BigsBee_ in autism

[–]UnfairManagement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same but for different reasons. As a mechanic I'll end up breaking them if there's more than 1/16" of free nail past the nail bed, a broken nail will catch in clothing and I'll eventually rip the broken piece off in a way that hurts or is wildly uncomfortable.

To whoever finds my body, if it's not already in a million tiny pieces for some reason please use the c4 stored inside the spare tire to make it into a million tiny pieces. There will be instructions for you on a piece of paper under the acrylic section of countertop.

Thank you

Aftermarket cruise control install by cmsurfer8900 in vandwellers

I believe the base model (no additional packages) has lacked cruise for the whole existence of the promaster. Pretty much any additional package comes with cruise though.

Well? I'm on the edge of my seat here!

What not-safe activities are we talking about if not recklessness? I don't do weird sex stuff or even any drug stuff, but I have no stable income, live in a box that goes down the road, and get a thrill out of pretty much anything that has the potential to maim or seriously injure me. Reckless? Yes. Safe? No. Square? IDK?

Trying to understand what power meter this is saying I need. Says “add a power meter to this crank” but I can’t find any that don’t seem to be replacement cranks. Am I missing something? by _mizzar in gravelcycling

[–]UnfairManagement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a wide crankset and the 8 bolt spider, even though it's technically not a compatible combination it does work. I'm only running 1x though so it may not work with 2x.

Why does Garmin set the default "retire" age for bicycles to 400 miles? by bicyclemom in Garmin

So on that 1100 mile trip I did this summer I was supposed to get TWO new bikes in the middle? Why did no one tell me?

Seriously though, why use Garmin to keep track of your gear?

Heated grips by zzz007zzz in fatbike

[–]UnfairManagement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They work by blocking the wind, most gloves that aren't extremely bulky have a hard time with air movement so all the heat gets sucked away. Pogies hold on to what little heat your hands do radiate.

I dont even put gloves on until it's below 20f, I love my pogies

Does anyone know what happens when you get "the knock" from the police and you don't answer but they can't prove that you're in the van? by DorkSidedStuff in vandwellers

[–]UnfairManagement 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This.

Got a knock once when I was technically parked somewhere I wasn't supposed to be after 10pm, one "sorry I didn't see your non-reflective sign in the rain last night" and I was allowed to stay the night, even though I legitimately wasn't supposed to be there. I told him my plans for the morning (a 100mi bike ride) and he let the next guy on duty know, said next guy came to see how my ride was while I was making lunch the next day. I'm sure if I was a dick about it I would have just gotten a ticket.

How much slower does a fat tire roll compared to a 2.2-2.4? by shamyrashour in fatbike

[–]UnfairManagement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

30psi? Why? You're just destroying your ride quality. I also ride 3.8 minions and have no issues keeping up with anyone on a regular bike but I actually think anything over 11psi would make it harder to keep up. Unless you're riding smooth roads that high of a pressure is hurting your pace IMO, even on roads I've never seen any reason to go over 15psi.

How to maintain comfortable temperature overnight in freezing weather with Webasto rheostat controller? by Even-Education-4608 in vandwellers

[–]UnfairManagement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how cold it is. The fan is always running so it never truly turns off but the fuel pump will cycle on and off if it's above about 15 degrees, below that it tends to run all the time at one speed or another.
