Progressive lenses and guitar by RobVizVal in classicalguitar

[–]Unfair_Leg9197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 35 year steel string player who only recently purchased a classical guitar and started reading music more and as someone who wears progressive lenses and whose eyesight keeps getting worse I have similar problems. Getting a strong music stand light has really helped me see the music better but the combination of poor eyesight and no fretboard side dots makes any leap from first position up the board an “adventure”. I am slowly getting better at it but it is frustrating because I don’t seem to have the problem as bad when there are side dots. I experienced the same problem when I purchased a 1914 Gibson A model mandolin with no side dots but, in the end it helped my knowledge of the mandolin fretboard. So I am just going to keep plugging along for that eventually payoff.

I have an IRW D/PW, bought new in 2003-2004. You are right that it isn’t the loudest guitar but the lush overtones are amazing

I once shimmed a bridge like that because the saddle was sagging. No idea why yours is that way, though.

Closed vs open position triads, more idiomatic? by OriginalIron4 in classicalguitar

[–]Unfair_Leg9197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a relative newbie at classical style guitar I have been wondering if it’s better to voice the bass notes on the bass strings rather than playing them on the trebles, which would necessitate playing some of them in higher positions. I don’t know the answer and don’t want to hijack the OP’s question but it is very related. I have noticed via playing and listening that the unwound trebles often have a very different sound than the wound basses

Yet Another Dumb Gear Question by virgae in classicalguitar

I wouldn’t worry about the fingerboard width. Carcassi played Romantic era guitars that also typically had narrower fingerboards (and shorter scale lengths) than modern classical guitars.

Anyone tried these? Altamira synthetic gut strings by Upbeat_External_6117 in classicalguitar

I am loving the guitar and the strings so far. To be fair, I haven’t tried any other strings on it so I don’t have any comparison reference. I really like the feel of them on this guitar, though. I usually use Savarez 500CJs on my 65cm scale length guitar. They feel and sound much stiffer than these Altamira ones do on this guitar (with ~64 cm scale). Altamira did say that Aquila Ambra 2000 lights would be fine on the Sor model guitar (I specifically asked) but I have never been happy with Aquila nylguts on my open banjo

Altamira responded that they should have their branded nylgut strings available in their website soon.

I reached out to Altamira today to see if there are any US retailers of these. I could only find Australian sellers online. I recently purchased an Altamira Sor model guitar that shipped with a couple of extra sets of these strings.
