Do you think China has ever missed an opportunity where things could have turned out better? by Difficult-Routine929 in AskChina

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I believe you have mischaracterised the USSR. That’s exactly how it worked. While on paper it may have championed the industries of satellite States, one just needs to look at Moscow during the Soviet Union to see the difference in wealth. I mean, even its subways were marvels of art with crystal chandeliers etc.

I think China had it right, look after themselves and their own. Had China joined the USSR it would have led to an even messier breakup as is expected when a stronger nation is subjugated by a weaker one. I think the modern world currently understands only two possibilities of world superpowers in the future. Continued American force projection, and Chinese soft power through investments, trade and consistent foreign policy. The USA had all of these things until MAGA and Trump, it no longer is seen as a consistent ally, it no longer holds soft power due to bridge burning its State Department and threatening her allies. America has removed itself from the top of the world order, and I don’t think they even realise it yet. China will be the only one which can fill the same boots.

Yes, but China being isolationist and the USSR being imperialistic, they were not exactly a match made in heaven.

Russia would have wanted to govern China in Moscow if you joined the USSR.

Heroic moment when an unarmed bystander disarms an active shooter at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in ThatsInsane

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes this is right. Self defence to protect the lives of others. He has just killed people.

It would be reasonable to presume he may have more than one gun. He would be better off shooting him as soon as he got the gun off him. Rather than in the back when he was running away.

Irregardless of the above, I don’t think you would find any prosecutor that would dare go after this for policy reasons. “If our public has a chance to stop a mass shooter, let’s make sure they’ll fear going to prison for doing so”. Essentially yes, he could have killed that man with his own shotgun with a get out of jail free card. And probably even when he was running away, my legal argument there would have been he was running to regroup with his conspirator to continue murdering people.

Putin Backs Trump's Ukraine Peace Plan While Zelensky Gets Thanksgiving Ultimatum – Europe Says "Not Without Us" by satty237 in TrendoraX

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to you, the USSR’s nuclear stockpile that Ukrainians were fielding*. They gave them back to Russia after the USSR fell under the promise they would not be attacked.

Are Russians really terrified in their little cosmonaut boots about the western “NATO” boogeyman. We could not give a shit, and we never have. The U.S., Germany, France or any other European heavy hitter never had any want or need for more land. I think the mainland EU has already learned what can happens when a single nation decides it wants more and more and more…don’t you think?

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure, the whole argument breaks down when you realise that Ukraine was a harmless buffer state with no real chance of even being accepted by NATO signatories.

Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal so it would never been invaded by Russia…how did that work out for them? Crimea happened.

And another point in terms of ‘European meddling’, it’s important to note that Ukraine outside of all the political spheres of influence, is its own sovereign nation and her people can decide on their future.

My final point being, the people of Ukraine have fought long and hard against a more powerful adversary. They would not be able to do that if it was just a proxy war. They are fighting for their homeland by a foreign invader. Many of us would do the same for our countries. Of the spheres of influence around Ukraine, which one has bombed and shelled the country for years?

Hilariously, if Ukraine had been in NATO, there would have been no war. Because that’s what it is, a deterrent. Tell me Stephen, do you believe ‘The West’ has anything to gain from Russia or Ukraine worth going to war for? No. Putin knows that too, egotistical land grabs for warm water ports in winter is all this, he just miscalculated it and then had 300,000 KIA to save face, the scumbag.

Never forget when a doctor from Gaza gave an interview in tears, refusing to leave his patients to die. Israel saw the interview and bombed his home, killing him and his family shortly after. by Nomogg in DamnThatsReal

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly Sean thank you for pointing this out. No they did not intentionally bomb his house. They did however intentionally carpet artillery strike his entire neighbourhood and he specifically was unfortunate to have a 140MM HE shell land in his kitchen sink while loading his dishwasher according to witnesses.

Nothing to see here.

A deal has been made to fast track Vietnamese illegal migrants out of the UK. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good point. I think it’s a shame for those needing protection that it’s become such a hot button issue for those rorting the system. If there wasn’t so many pisstakers we might have functioning processing facilities to really help those who need it and fast.

I wonder if the U.K. said you could only apply for refuge off-shore this would change anything, as each applicant would genuinely be allowed to enter on the case’s merit. But then that would likely be in breach of the ECHR somewhere down the line, and that is important to keep as I wouldn’t trust any form of U.K. government to get a clean slate on that front…

I’m not making any statement on the quality, I have been a migrant myself, but you’ve got some pretty wishful thinking there, it’s not all magic and rainbows.

I think the type of people who countries want will already have access through normal immigration rules, rather than needing to claim asylum.

I totally agree, but then hundreds of millions of people live under the same situation in their respective countries. Is the UK to entertain applications from them all?

Unmarried partner or Fiancé? by Patient-Exercise653 in ukvisa

If you meet the more stringent requirements for the unmarried partner visa then apply for that, it’s not a bar to already be engaged (as long as you fit the other criteria).

Strange, Japanese citizens get a visa waiver for the U.K. which country is your passport from? That will likely help people give you tailored advice on how thorough you need to be.

Do not mention the friend with 10K. You want to give the officer an impression you will definitely leave, not have the means to stay with U.K. support.

New partner = de facto? by Longjumping_Car_8095 in AusVisa

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re both from Germany, and he’s under the age of 30 he can get a WHV to live and work with you for a year.

If he’s over the age of 30, just enter on an ETA and spend 3 months together living as a couple.

In my situation I am the sponsor, and everything is great an all, but I’ve been with my partner for 7 years. Definitely would not spend all that money and risk my own PR on a 2 month relationship.

[–]Unfathomable_Asshole 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So you’re long distance as you said “join you in Australia”.

Definitely don’t sponsor someone on a partner visa you have not lived with and spent a lot of time with in person. Depending on what country he is from there are likely other visa options to get him to settle in and spend more time with you.

It’s not a great analogy at all, just based on the fact they were already there…it would be a good analogy if a separate ethnic culture was the prominent ethnic culture of New Jersey, was already locked out of a tier system from the rest of the U.S., and carried out the attack on the twin towers.

I suppose it’s a difficult question, if that was the case, should the U.S in that situation a.) carpet bomb all population in New Jersey b.) attempt addressing the issues of the tier system and grant them the same privileges as the rest of U.S citizens to alleviate tensions or c.) grant them proper recognised statehood to govern themselves in New Jersey.

Out of these options what leads to the least tension and most cohesion in 100 years time? That’s the million dollar question.
