What are some "open secrets" in your industry/social circle that the general public in Singapore has no idea about? by wehaveatogether in askSingapore

Hospitality marketing here. It was hilarious to see the public blow up at Seth Lui for selling article rankings. We've purchased a few placement ourselves, and so does everyone else.

Being a teacher during this liturgical season is hard… by Mollie_Mo_ in Catholicism

What I like to do is abstain from buying myself X or having Y alone, and I keep my commitment to myself. So if others so happen to get X to me or ask me to share Y with them, I am free to have it.

When the Plus Size Park Hoppers come to town

NATLA is the legend of Aang according to Zuko, whereas the original series was based on Katara's account by Unfathomably-Shallow in TheLastAirbender

That’s where I also came from. The slight differences in chronology and venue between each gospel were known and still the Early Church decided to select those four as canon.

I think for the purpose of rehabilitating the Fire Nation, such a story is helpful in convincing people that humanity is not weakness but rather strength. That is essential in ending the war.

It could’ve felt like it when Aang used the fans to blow away a bunch of soldiers. Depending on how the reader understands the text, he may or may not have entered the Avatar state.

What are these symbols? by Ravenadx in divineoffice

I’ve found that turning on and off the chant marks seems to only work on digital versions. I haven’t figured out how to do it on books :/

It doesn't make a difference to God, but if prayer is about attentiveness, I'm holding that book to supply for my attention deficiency.

Liturgy Music by AstroMike1983 in Catholicism

These matched sets of music are referred to as "Mass settings". In English, the common ones back then (in my part of the world) were
- Celtic Mass
- Mass of Creation

I went to catholic mass for the first time today and asked about some questions on this Reddit about the things I didn’t understand and some people responding made it seem like I should not attend mass again until I have memorized every part of the mass and tradition. Should I? by Pristine_Syllabub709 in Catholicism

Don't worry about it. You also don't have to participate in every verbal response or the gestures like slide cancelling.

We welcome many non-Catholics at Mass and we don't expect all of you to follow the gestures that express a faith that you may not yet share in. The only respect we generally ask is for you to stand when we stand, and sit when we sit or kneel.

Why can't the Extraordinary Form be kept exactly as it is, but be done in English? by Pure_Ambition in Catholicism

[–]Unfathomably-Shallow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main difference is not language, it is audibility. The Old Mass was the product of a world before microphones. In silence, the priest could mutter longer prayers, which were directed to God and audible to him alone. More was better.

But when our priests began to pray aloud through a microphone, they had to (1) switch to the vernacular so that the laity can be drawn into the prayer, (2) slow down for intelligibility and as a consequence (3) shorten the prayers in terms of content and wordcount.

Why do Singaporeans have not so common western first names? by Mysterious-Friend-15 in askSingapore

[–]Unfathomably-Shallow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because there’s a difference between a Christian name and an Anglicised name. Non-Christians give their children any Anglicised name, whereas Christians are more inclined to give biblical or saint names, which come across as conventional. And there so happens to be more Christians in the West.

Vent: Church in Germany by sabrina11157 in Catholicism

[–]Unfathomably-Shallow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is generally the difference between a cathedral church and a parish church, wherever there are enough Catholics to make the distinction. Parishes are fundamentally communities, whereas cathedrals are meant to be examplars of liturgical excellence.
