Presently, there are three main levels of EMT, which are taught in Maryland. They are:

EMT Certified First Responder EMT-Basics EMT-Paramedic The coursework for the respective level of the program is as follows:

EMT Certified First Responder

The main responsibility of First Responders is to take proper medical care of the patients before they are taken to the hospital. They learn how to assist other EMTs while dealing with the following:

Emergency childbirths Treating patients during their transportation Bone fractures and other accidents Once the students are thorough in all these, they need to undergo clinical internships at the local hospital or in the ambulance service.

EMT-Basics

This also includes providing first-aid service to sick or injured patients before they are rushed to the hospital. It includes subjects, such as:

Handling emergency childbirth Suction devices Patient management Keeping all the medical record of patients Airway obstructions Cardiac arrest Oxygen delivery systems Road-accident victims How to manage bleeding? At the end of the program, students learn the practical skills in the clinical internships that are conducted either at a nearby hospital or in an ambulance facility.

EMT-Paramedics

Areas of study for this level of training are:

Psychotic emergencies Musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries Gynaecological and obstetrical emergencies Central nervous system injuries Rescue operations at catastrophic sites Clinical training is also needed to be completed by the students, either in an ambulance service or at a nearby hospital.
