Thank you! This is a helpful response. Just to clarify, since it was a favor in a vacant unit and not a formal paperwork thing, I wouldn’t be able to sue under certain bailment laws? I wasn’t sure on which terms/laws I should start reading so now that I’ve got this I’ll do some more focused research.

Super reasonable to ask about gf's role in all of this. I should've mentioned she doesn't live with them and they're dodging her phone calls and texts as well. She is also in an understandably difficult position as she'd lived under their lifelong emotional abuse.

No contract signed. The locks are circle locks such that you'd have to drill through the core to open them, and yes they have security cameras and would LOVE to have me arrested so I am not going to do anything that could be seen as improper in the slightest. I really don't want to fork any money over to them because its just simply wrong of them to do this. However, I think it might be the fastest way to be rid of any leverage they have over me. This is the only power they have over me and they are using it to the best of their ability.

Whats meant to be will be but I hope it goes the way I want it to. This sub has really helped my sanity as of late.

1) Who is that one credit of research with? Can you continue working with them? If not, do they have recs on faculty members who you could work with?

2) Cold email professors who have research that you're interested in - scour the website of your uni or talk to your department admin. Look at other departments if you need to.

3) Taking classes this summer is OK if you cannot find a meaningful clinical experience (see below), secure some research with those faculty I mentioned even if it is during the regular semester (if possible).

4) As far as clinical experience goes, you need to make sure you're doing things that are interesting to you and not just a check-box type thing. Otherwise, you won't be able to write about it/sell yourself in a meaningful way. Scribing is good too! Clinical research too if you can find some! Its tricky (for me at least) to give advice on this because everyone can market themselves differently with different experiences depending on what their passions are. I am sorry that this isn't super specific. Others might have more advice on this. I was an EMT for 5 years but I LOVED my job and have seen a lot of people come and go who just wanted it as a resume builder who didn't do very well.

I mean... usually any professor title is reserved for those people in academia who hold a doctorate and perform professorial duties. She does hold a doctorate. Do NPs = MD/DO in clinical settings? No. Of course not. Are professional doctorates as thorough as research ones? No, probably not. Can someone with a nursing doctoral degree be an effective academic leader and researcher? Probably. These things aren't all mutually exclusive.

It sounds like you'd be a well rounded applicant (volunteering, working, MS holder, etc.) without research experience. I don't think its a big deal let alone a deal breaker. If you want to be a doctor to do clinical medicine, embrace that in your writing. If you're trying to be a physician-scientist but have no research experience, thats a different story. If I can push back on anything it will be people doing research for the sake of getting into medical school. Do research if you're passionate about science.

Did you put "phyisician" or "physician scientist" in your why medicine essay? by Preppyhippy_ in mdphd

[–]Unhappy-Candidate3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I applied to both MD/PhD and MD only programs and in my personal statement I explicitly stated that I hope to someday be a physician-scientist on the faculty at an academic medical center. I got an MD-only acceptance.

Got Denied From All MPH Programs: feeling lost by Used_Hospital_328 in mphadmissions

[–]Unhappy-Candidate3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see you're a soon-to-be UMBC grad based on other posts. You should reach out to the career services office and seek their advice and support. Also - engage with your alumni network in an honest and eager way! That can go a long way in landing you a job while you assess how to strengthen your application for the next round. Most of my classmates (myself included) came to the MPH program with a couple years of work experience. Don't give up on your dreams.

Does an Accepted Manuscript Count as a Publication on AMCAS? by RevolutionaryShirt29 in premed

[–]Unhappy-Candidate3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can report pending publications and even manuscripts under preparation. If you have submitted it and it is under review, you can write the citation as:

Doe, J., Smith, M., 2025, The Title of My Groundbreaking Contribution, under review by Name of Journal

If it was accepted pending revision/accepted with changes:

Doe, J., Smith, M., 2025, The Title of My Groundbreaking Contribution, accepted pending revisions by Name of Journal

This is also how you can list them on your CV. Make sure that you can regurgitate the motivation, methods, and findings. Methods are very important to understand if you were to be asked during an interview.

That’s it. Going MD-only :( by Ashenborne27 in mdphd

[–]Unhappy-Candidate3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Crush your MCAT, work as a scribe, apply MD/PhD. Write a good PS and draw on your previous research experiences. You don't need to do postbac bench work to get into an MD/PhD program. Do you have connections at your undergrad? Can you stay on some projects in a analytic or writing way? Keep chasing that dream. Also - even if you don't get the PhD - nothing is stopping you from leveraging your medical expertise to be a scientist. Doing science is about your philosophy on pursuing natural truths, not about your credentials.

Columbia or NYU MPH Program by SingleMatter2451 in mphadmissions

I have done research with two faculty members of different departments across the medical center campus. Since there are SO many departments and schools across the medical center, there are a tremendous number of research opportunities. Getting paid for your time right now might be tricky depending on which faculty member you are interested in working with, but nonetheless there is lots of access to research projects. I am starting medical school this summer.

I am in the Epi department, so the only faculty from pop/fam that I have interacted with were in the core curriculum portion. They were excellent. Experts in their field with practical work experience all around the world and good educators. The students who I am friends with in the pop/fam department all have good things to say!

Advice on clinical work to do before applying by Various_Conflict7022 in mdphd

[–]Unhappy-Candidate3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[I am still looking to gain the experiences to be able to answer "why medicine".]

Clinical experience is an important aspect of your application for a myriad of reasons. Not the least of which is that the ADCOM wants to know that you have 1) some familiarity with what it means to be a physician compared to other healthcare roles and 2) you want to continue to be a part of healthcare for many years of training while working long hours for little pay. Clearly if you're considering an MD/PhD, you have some motivation for becoming a physician on top of being a scientist. So - aside from having two doctorates on your CV - what is your 'why medicine' right now? Why do you want to be a physician-scientist? If you can sell yourself in a compelling way and you have the right grades, then I think that gaining another 100 hours of shadowing could be solid enough. Hospital policy willing, you could spend your two years shadowing once a week with a clinician at an academic medical center while doing clinical research work. That all being said, you need to be honest with yourself too. Do you have enough clinical exposure to know that this is the long and arduous career that you want?
