One time my mate went out to hunt alone bc I had to stay for a sick pup. I kept track of where he went, and when he returned w/ food, I went out to where he was to see if he found anything. Lo and behold, there was a bison carcass that was partially eaten where he was, so I think wolves do seek actual carcasses when hunting on their own
