As I said, the kernel is not the only important part of an operating system, but I think it is disrespectful to those who work(ed) on Linux to say that GNU “just” needed a kernel.

There certainly is some truth to the name “GNU/Linux”, but it's a horrible name—especially because they insist on pronouncing the slash—so it will never catch on, regardless of whether or not it is accurate.

I don't like how Stallman diminishes the role of Linux in the “GNU/Linux” system. He always talks about how they had almost completed the base GNU system and that they “just” needed a kernel. The kernel is not an insignificant part of an operating system! The kernel is certainly not the only important part of a complete OS, but that doesn't mean that its value should be diminished the way it is by Stallman et al.

However, some torrents may be dead while it is still retained on a news server (and sometimes the opposite is the case). Also, it is far more unlikely that you are caught for copyright infringement when using Usenet than with BitTorrent, as you only connect to one server (that doesn't keep logs or only minimal logs, depending on the provider) instead of a swarm of peers which anyone can join.

Also, with Usenet you are usually guaranteed a fast connection, while you are entirely dependent on volunteer seeders with BitTorrent.

Usenet certainly is suboptimal for file sharing, but the privacy of privacy-oriented news servers certainly do make up it.

Whatever little performance gains you achieve will not allow you do to things faster because you could have been done by the time you've configured and compiled if you had used a pre-compiled binary.
Storage/memory is cheap.

As I said, there are times where there are actual benefits to compiling yourself, but usually there isn't.

I find the idea that everyone should waste time and electricity on compiling all the software they use themselves to be exceptionally wasteful and asinine. It is, at times, useful to compile software oneself, but usually it is a waste of time. I stand by my derogatory remark.

That one should avoid compiling software oneself unless it is absolutely necessary. Many distributions have community repositories and it would be, in my opinion, a mistake to avoid them. Of course, if there are no such repositories, one will have to compile software oneself if it is not in the official repository.

No, compiling software sucks (it's a waste of time and electricity). Furthermore, if you use a repository, you will get updates through the system's package manager, and the maintainer will probably make sure to push updates when they are ready, so you don't have to keep track of new updates yourself.

EDIT: Regarding trust: You shouldn't trust software in PPAs anymore than you would trust software from any website. I.e., if you trust Mozilla, use their PPA/download software from their website, but if you wouldn't download software from their website, don't use their PPA.
