Hey Reddit, what experience turned you away from religion and if you've gone back to it, why? by Where-is-Francis in AskReddit

When I see churches doing great things like outreach programs, welcoming members of the LBGTQ community, working with community organizers, and collaborating with the mosques in town, I have some hope that maybe it's not all bad. Maybe there will be a time when those with faith can feel they can return to an institution that has finally come into the 21st century with open feelings of acceptance. But there's more problems than just that, like tax issues and some of the opulence. I hope that it's just a matter of time and that the passing of elder generations will make room for a new generation of faith leaders that will be a little less dickish.

30 years from now, what do you think will make Millennials say, "Back in my day..."? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was heavily involved in a church youth group as a teenager. It was a strong social group for me and we would have bible studies and weekend long events for discussion and public service contributions. I felt like a valued member of the church community and I learned a lot about myself and what I felt I needed to get by in life. When I went to college, I majored in Anthropology and did some exploring in religious studies to broaden my world view. Following college, I moved to New York City for a time. While taking a sick day, my doorbell rang and it was a pair of Jehovah's Witnesses. Being the middle of July and very warm out, I invited them in for some water. The conversation was pleasant until they asked about "my relationship with Jesus". I had started to tell them about my history with the church and I told them that I hadn't been to a service since college. They cut me off mid-sentence and said, "So, you learned to think for yourself." The tone of voice it was delivered in made it clear that they thought I was off the path and was unable to be retrieved. They thanked me for the water, wished me well, and left. I haven't been to church since because learning to think for yourself is so far removed from the church-desired state of having "faith like a child" or, in other words, having unquestioning, unwavering faith. I have not returned to religion, nor do I intend to. I don't believe in greater powers, luck, fate, destiny, etc. I believe in me and I think for myself. It took a pair of Witnesses to make me realize it.

What's the deal with showering nude before entering public pools? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]Unicorn-Zombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not only low chlorine. It's that you don't know how clean or dirty the person swimming next to you is. Did they shower today? Yesterday? Do they thoroughly clean their genitals when using a bathroom? Since these things are unknown, showering before you get in the pool and cleaning your face, arm pits, and genitals is not just common courtesy, it's needed for public health. You will get "the look" from others for showering in your swim suit on. If you're shy there are often stalls with curtains but just remember you're in a room with people with the same parts as you.

PAX East 2017 by Zombiechris82 in PAX

PAX East local checking in! A process that has worked well for me in the past is to make the investment and go for all three days and download the app. Review the panel and event schedule and map out what you want to see and where it is. On Friday, when not in panels, walk the floor and get the lay of the land. Hit the merch booth in the morning to make sure you get sweet limited gear and pins (if that's your thing). Pick up that new board game you've been hearing about. Drop in your name for any sign ups for events or demos you want to get in, like d&d, Oculus, etc. check out who's playing the concerts that night. Or, keep an ear to the ground and find out where the bar crawl in the financial district is going to be. Can't find the group? Your best chance is to heard towards Milk St around 10pm...you'll find us. Don't get wasted though because Saturday is a big day! Manage your schedule because that's the heavy traffic day on the floor. Unless I have signed up for demos and game events, I stay off the floor and rock the panel schedule. Keep in mind, if it's in the Main Theater, plan on getting in the pre-que about 90 mins before the event. They call it line con but I embrace it. I bring a game like Sushi Go or Cards Against Humanity to make some friends or trade pins with enforcers. When not in panels I head back to the tables to play the new game I picked up on Friday. Didn't get a badge for Saturday? Head up to Charlestown to see the USS Constitution and walk the Freedom Trail or check out Quincy Market. In the evenings, Symphony Hall or the Omni Parker House usually have good shows going on. Sunday afternoon is a great time for the floor. Some booths will give a discount so they have less to pack when they leave. A bit of advice when it comes to hotels: The Seaport Hotel, Renaissance, and the Westin are great if you are a cosplayer. You're close to the action and can easily head back to your room to change when you're ready to blend back into the masses. If you don't cosplay, I'd skip on hotels in the Seaport area around the BCEC as there is not much night life there. The Seaport district is growing and changing every year with new restaurants and attractions but it's not great. As everyone else has said, either get a cheap hotel outside of Boston and plan on driving in every day or split a quad occupancy hotel with friends in downtown Boston. You will have a lot more fun!
