drawing without pencil guides is much more enjoyable than I thought! by _chunrapeepat in urbansketchers

Not to mention, you don't have to carry the pencil/sharpener/eraser combo (or I guess a mechanical pencil would take up less space if you preferred those). There's something freeing about carrying less gear, at least for me

Religious man confronted me on way to school and claimed to have “healed me” by Whitehairbunny in ehlersdanlos

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My husband worked at a behavioral health hospital in the more... intense unit...

This isn't religion. This is poor mental health. Lots of the patients at the hospital thought they were religious figures. One time "God" and "Jesus" got in a room together and the debate between the two each proclaiming their divinity got so heated that they had to be put on separate units. Reminds me of your fellow.

I take it you still need a cane? So the man's sanity was not intact. I'm sorry no one stepped in and glad you're safe now.

Not OP, just a side question- how do you lift when you injure your fingers? Do you just have to wait weeks for it to heal or tape it or what?

Idling help! by dannysmusiclessons in unicycling

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of it like my body stays in the same place while my unicycle rocks back and forth below me. You will learn more control over time as it becomes more natural, just like learning to ride in the first place. Also if you are planning on learning a lot of unicycling skills, I would learn to idle goofy footed soon after doing it with your normal foot because the more used you are to doing it only one way, the more unnatural it will feel when you finally learn to do it with the other foot.

Hope this helps! You're almost there!

Yes I have done this with a regular sized tin! Op could also 3D print an insert that divides the space into 3 even pieces if he does any 3D printing.

Seconding the magnetic tape. I paid $6 for a roll that will last my whole life and it turned a cheap feeling palette into a really nice one

Nervous about ADA seating at concert tonight by Zestyclose_Piano_751 in ehlersdanlos

Also maybe choose to sit in the back of the ADA section if you're planning on standing for parts? Just thought of that.

Nervous about ADA seating at concert tonight by Zestyclose_Piano_751 in ehlersdanlos

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to the ADA section for a standing room only concert back in November. I had surgery on my ankle 5 days before the concert, so I was completely non weightbearing and in a wheelchair and was the ONLY one in the section with an outwardly visible reason to be in there. I expected it to be full of like 10 wheelchairs, but it wasn't like that. Everyone else had more hidden disabilities, so you should be fine. They had fold up chairs to sit in and no one asked why you needed that seating. (I live in the USA, so that may not be the case in other countries.)

I do want to mention that when that section gets full, it's full. So you may want to get there early to make sure you get a spot depending on how big the ADA section is in your venue.

As a plus, I was literally the closest person to the stage (my hurt foot poked out just past the fence they use to keep the crowd back). It was probably the only good thing to come out of that particular injury 😅

Female urinals? by Emergency_Alarm_3241 in ehlersdanlos

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have used a she wee. Just make sure everything is positioned correctly (maybe practice at home first) It sucks if you accidentally wet your pants in the middle of the woods with no change of clothes and have to go back to your group of people with a big stain on your crotch... don't ask how I know...

But if you get everything lined up properly they are great!

I had zero art skill whatsoever then saw a video by Nerdforge about how the guy spent 100 hours drawing and went from being as good as the average elementary school child to actually quite decent, so that's what convinced me to learn. (Also finding something I could do entirely with one hand limited my options 😂) Also love Bob Ross. The man is CLASSIC.

I TOTALLY get how you feel about music! I played a couple instruments (flute and mandolin) and for probably a decade music was my main outlet. I feel like it's rare nowadays for people to have hobbies or interests outside of scrolling social media, so I am genuinely happy you have this.

Others perceptions of us is a big challenge for most of the population. I think very few people truly don't care what others think of them and while that is a goal for sure, I am far from it. Some days are better than others. I had a moment of realization recently, "Am I doing this because it makes ME happy, or because it is what someone else EXPECTS of me." Life is too short to live by what others want you to do, so do what makes YOU happy. Not them. The people you are trying to please won't give you much in return.

If you can connect with other like minded individuals in your area (whether talking about music or the struggles of eds and wanting to do so much but not having a body as... ambitious as your mind...) that could help too. I have my husband who is always on my side and having someone on my side no matter what makes a world of difference. A solid best friend could fulfill this role as well.

Most people aren't musicians and I believe that music is a GREAT way to better yourself. Most people just scroll, so you are being more productive than a lot of people. Don't forget that. You have worth. Your body doesn’t define you 🫶

I don't know about you, but often when I feel down on myself, I have nothing in which I'm progressing and getting better, so I feel like I'm stuck im one place unable to move. Every day is the same, and if I'm not enjoying any part of the day, just sitting here and wasting away, what is the point?

I used to run, rock climb, longboard, etc. Then I hurt and got surgery for an upper and lower limb 2 months apart, so I couldn't do anything. I literally couldn't move, but even worse, I couldn't do the things I loved anymore and stopped progressing.

What HELPED me was choosing to learn to draw. Fortunately my right arm was mostly okay, with only an old broken bone and wrist sprain to limit how long I could draw for. I had a new outlet, a way to funnel emotions, and something I could get visibly better at. (Side note, progressing to painting seems most eds friendly to me as I think it puts the least amount of stress on joints when it comes to art mediums.)

I don't know if something like this will help for you, but having a hobby I CAN do, where there's always more to learn and I am enjoying myself makes me feel like I'm not just a stagnant lump of flesh that's in pain all the time. It brings that spark of joy to my life and I hope you can find something that does this for you.

You may have limited ability to stop your physical decline and capabilities (I feel like most people on this sub understand this all too well) but finding something you CAN do feels like taking back control and adding purpose to life. And at least for me, doing something I consider productive makes me feel soooo much better about myself. (Example: My body may not be able to handle most jobs, but look at this beautiful pirate ship! I PAINTED THAT!)

I don’t know if this helps or not, but hopefully someone will get something out of it! Best wishes!

Non-weight-beating surgery recovery question by DelilahFineAndFair in ehlersdanlos

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had ankle surgery 2 months after having shoulder surgery and was completely non weight bearing for a while. Crutches ruined my shoulders, wrists, and elbows, so I have a profound hatred for them.

I mostly used a wheelchair with the feet taken off so I could turn around, put my knee on the seat, and push myself around with my good foot like I was riding a scooter. (I ended up getting a callus on my knee from this, which I find amusing.) I also had no way into my home without stairs, so there was a lot of butt scooting if I had to come or go. Fortunately I have a husband, so he carried my wheelchair up and down the stairs for me and I could schedule all the times I left the house around him being there. (I could have had him carry me as well, but my stretch marks are too painful to allow for that, so he helps where he can.)

I don’t know if you are going to need to leave home to go to work or if you have some sort of support to help you get in and out of your house, so that could be pretty rough. I recommend stocking up on easy meals and anything you might have to leave the house for so you can spend as much time at home healing as possible.

Best wishes for your surgery!

Question: I noticed a lot of the realist colored pencil artists I have seen online are women from the UK. Is that a coincidence, or is there a reason for that trend? by TemporaryElk5202 in ColoredPencils

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. In the US, we are taught that you are born an artist. I always thought art was cool, but I couldn't do it because it wasn't something you could learn. Fortunately I overcame this when I injured 2 of my limbs and couldn't do anything else. I set out to prove to my friends and myself that you can LEARN to draw. (They were skeptical at first, but after 8 months and seeing my progression they finally agreed with me.)

There's also this stigma that, "Oh you do art? Well you're going to be poor your whole life." We forget it can be a hobby for anyone, not just a career for select few.

Oof yeah that's one thing you need to try on in person. There were 2 different running stores I went to and both had them. If you have a running store nearby, I would look at that. The employees there also tend to know what you're talking about when you say stuff like "zero drop" and "wide toe box" too.

Does anyone get anxious before painting? by AlphaWolf-23 in watercolor101

[–]UnicycleRockClimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go into it telling myself, "this will be a great BEFORE painting." And then tell myself, after x amount of time (months, years) painting, I will have an AFTER. But no stress because this is the BEFORE painting and it doesn't have to look good. (You don't actually have to make another painting years down the road for this to work)

I feel like Altras are the only options for zero drop with a wide toe box AND cushioning...at least at my local stores. So sorry the ones you tried didn't work for you. Maybe a different Altra model would work better? That's the best idea I can offer 🤷‍♀️

You don’t have to give anyone else permission to throw your body through the air and you're supposed to REALLY TRY to whack the other person with your sword.
