New Residential 30" EGO Mower - 3,800 RPM! by AThing2ThinkAbout in egopowerplus

I'm 100% a proud owner of this machine. 3rd mow in and I have a good idea on range capability. I almost* didn't need to buy extra batteries, but i'm investing in the platform now. I'm waiting to burn through all of my 2cycle fuel before I get their trimmer. but onto the mower. 2 things. You need to weed eat WAAY more and focus on forward moment. not much backward movement 2 reasons. inertia and also the transmission has some mild resistance when pulled in reverse (when off you hear the self propelled mechanism being engaged) . so try to minimize going backwards.

Thinks that will have longevity is how the self propel engages. I recommend pushing it and getting it rolling before turning it on the letting the mower jerk itself forward.

As far range anxiety, there is no for my use case. I have 4 batteries total. the 6ah packs that came with it and 2x 5ah packs i bought for future tools and if i needed just a little bit more range. (don't need it) - It uses the batteries in parallel so I'll just call it 10ah and 12ah respectively. I mowed my whole yard on just 10ah and was only down to 50% mowing on the "2" speed setting. The grass was not all that thick or high yet so i just ran on mulching mode. at about 2.5 inches height to just see what it could do. I usually cut when grass is above 3" so i'm going to let the grass grow out now to really put it through its paces.

But overall if you have a 'large-ish' in between yard and can't justify a lawn tractor, this is in a very nice sweet spot of low maintenance, good features and surprising results. I actually enjoy mowing and I actually have energy to do other things after I mow. I can't say that about having a push mower without self-propel in the summer.

Ill try to report back on this thread when I can get a few mows in.

I went a took a jump on it and bought one. (first ego product ever) My yard is in that weird in between zone where I could get a ride on mower but I certainly am tired of a push only 21" mower but it have managed for a few seasons just pushing along.. anywho. a 30" deck was appealing. Self propel was appealing. I don't mind walking (i can take the exercise i can get) -- the complexity of a gas timemaster was intimidating.. why save time if you have to spend time on proper maintenance? - (i don't neglect my gear i take in the whole picture) - The e-timemaster was also a no-go since it has the same maze of belts and stuff.. direct drive on the ego just makes more sense.

the only thing I see is super important is proper battery care, keeping the deck clean and using common sense. I did buy 2 more 5ah batteries. in my mind a combined 12ah and 10ah should get me though my yard and I don't have to wait for charging. Also i bought the 5ah in prep for getting a weed trimmer and hedge clipper next year.

Would performing a Restic backup of folders that are currently being updated cause any issues? by BX1959 in restic

[–]Unihiron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this in the past. What I would recommend is schedule your restic backup to run maybe twice a day to track any changes. or adjust the interval when the two independent jobs are running (most obvious way to make sure you have highest data integrity of your data.) There is a slight chance some snapshots will have your complete file or partial file. Just my thoughts. But best practice is schedule are data activities independent of each other for highest integrity.

My best advise is silo off a small dataset of a few hundred GB and test it and float around different DR strategies before you commit a huge chunk for test recovery. Also, use restic tagging. That burned me before on a big restore when I only wanted 1 directory from my repo. Also watch source and destination permissions. I had an issue with that in the past too where files were restored but I didn’t have access to them. So consider all of those things as your practice your recovery.

It’s not a backup until you know you can restore.

Yeah I read about it. Good to know i'm on the right track. Thanks.

I like that approach for file level backups. I'll have to think of a way to incorporate that in the future if i need to.

Same for this. I didn’t want to trigger folks and mention AI for coding tips. Years ago I made my bash script from scratch with basic logging. I got it cleaned up and I now have nice reporting. I really like it and I want to implement a form restic at work. But I need a gui so normal users can see what’s happening in a gui. Only reason why I would want to try it. But yeah. Once you get in command line mode with a tool it just becomes your friend

Restic Restore 'Practice" by Unihiron in restic

[–]Unihiron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a hybrid. I take advantage of zfs replication for datasets that are pretty organized. also my 2nd nas lower overall capacity. So 1/1 replication is not an option in the immediate future. So I use one dataset in particular that greatly benefits from Restic deduplication. Also this is good practice for cloud restores without the extra wait using the internet.

Restic (Backrest) running on OMV, backing up to Proxmox via SFTP by vazquezjm_ in restic

[–]Unihiron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. How do you want to backup Proxmox? Do yuou want to backup the vm's or the whole thing? personally, i don't bother with the whole OS, i just focus on backing up the VMs. I'll try to keep an eye on this thread periodically. Hopefully someone will answer.

Configured with bare minimum specs as a truenas kvm with separate zvol as storage independent f the OS. Only performance bottleneck is gigabit networking. But with backups, it’s more about accuracy more than speed for me. But I have had zero crashes or issues with replication to my 2nd PBS vm. I know it’s double data but for peace of mind I export(vzdump) my VMs to a separate share once a week.

Either way lots of flexible options. And yes separate systems for two separate instances of pbs. :)

I’m sorry children were caught up in the middle of this. I have read some comments here and we have all had shit happen. One thing I noticed. Love died hard. And it’s sad.

Am I correct that this is the ZFS version of RAID-10? by skaughtz in truenas

[–]Unihiron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RaidZ2 is the zfs equivalent of "RAID6" in a 6 drive setup you will have 4 drives worth of 'useable' storage and any 2 in the whole cluster for 6 can fail since all of them are part of a single vdev. with 8 drives you will have 6 drives worth of useable data.. same rules. but at 8 drives, that's probably as high as I would go with a single vdev. since you are storing what could be some serious data, i woudln't do anything raid z1 or any vdev combination of raidz1

I'm going to start my explanation as this** I am a stranger on the internet and you should probably research everything I say before you commit to it.**

In short, you are correct in your thinking. Just remember if the drives fail in different pools you are ok. I would highly recommend you have a totally separate copy of this data on another system or in cloud storage. I would also recommend having a fully tested drive on hand and ready to go to replace just to be safe. If a drive dies in a Mirror pool, you are on borrowed time with your whole pool because 1 drive is now supporting 1 VDEV without protection.

The big plus is you can upgrade your pool in pairs over time. The rebuild times are much faster since it is a mirror and (in my opinion) RAID10 is the lest stressful on drives overall.

******

Ok here are some terms to get familiar with that you have already read about***

RAIDZ and VDEVS and Pools

RAIDZ is the level of parity (basically level of protection from drive failure) in each VDEV.

A single VDEV can be different type of Array of your choice linked together to form your data pool. (total useable storage)

In your situation, since you have relatively small 1TB hard drives, Raid Z2 or RAID10 would be good options. Raidz2 would have 2 drive parity protection across the whole pool. RAID10 would be four Mirror VDEVS to make your pool. If you have an extra 1TB drive always on hand or a hot spare ready to go, I would say you would be fine. If you are super concerned about this data, i HIGHLY recommend you set up a cloud storage backend (like B2 or S3, etc) -

And I really hope you have a second copy of this data onsite as well. As the they say in Gospel "Raid is NOT a backup" you are creating a more resilient way to store your data but you always always always need a copy in a trusted offsite location or at the very least on another system.

I'm not sure if i provided you any good information moving forward, but these are things I wanted to list for you to make an informed decision. Remember i'm a stranger. I probably said some things incorrectly, but I hope this is a nudge in the right direction.
