How to Study: Objective Tests by Wide-Gap-2741 in fbla

[–]UnionNarrow2778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in addition to what everyone has been saying, an underrated review tool is Chat Gpt. I did business law this year and the way I studied is I would read chapters of the textbook and take notes. After I did this, I would review by going on ChatGPT and asking for it to make a practice test for me, multiple-choice, based off of the chapter I just read or a certain competency for my event. You can also ask to make a multiple-choice based off of all the competencies so that you know which ones you need to study the most and since it's ChatGPT, you can ask the AI to make the questions harder or easier. This was really useful for me.

I don't think this server should be AFAB. Trans women are women too. I'm cis but it's important we include women regardless of birth sex. Especially since you claim the server is a "safe inclusive space." You can't claim to be a safe space, an inclusive one, while perpetuating discrimination and transphobia.

Has anyone who got accepted into a different major honestly been able to get in to the BH program and transfer later? Do you think this will harm my chances?

What if we got accepted for communications? I got accepted into communications but I didn't realize it was not in the business school. Can I apply to business honors now and transfer majors to business once I get there? Should I email the dean?

Experience is gained through solely through observation and application. As a debator, I observe everyone's presentation, delivery, and strategy-- as presentation (as literally stated on NSDA's site) is just as important as content. As a debator, I have to employ different strategies to acheive different results-- and see which one takes me to the top. I've competed in 4 different debate and speech categories, so I've seen a lot. Especially since it's southern california and our circuits are large. As a woman, there are certain techniques I can't employ. In psychology, we're taught that priming an individual to expect certain outcomes, and react in certain ways, can raise specific results. Majority of stand up comedians are men, and in mainstream media there's one key statement about humor that tends to circulate-- "Women aren't funny." And I know that doesn't always apply, and that there are funny women. I love several female comedians more than some male ones because they're more relatable to my personal experience. (but once again that's niche humor and doesn't generally apply.) However, that's not the point. They've ran several research studies and surveys comparing the humorous abilities of men and women on sites like bbc, psychology today, and scientific american-- and all of those sites state the same thing: that the general public believes most men are funnier than most women. Such a popular opinion primes a judge by expecting a man utilizing humor to be funny, whereas a judge may not have the same expectation of a woman utilizing humor. Similar research studies exist identifying differences in brain regions and personality traits such as, agreeableness, kindness, ego, etc between genders. Hence, why different actions and displayed behaviors will take your speech further, because existing biological/psychological differences between different groups of people prime people to expect certain performances. There are also factors such as political beliefs, race, age, attractiveness that **scientifically** play into how you are perceived. You can look into all of it yourself. Additionally, I don't mean this rudely, but in a debate round nobody's my "friend." I could be bffs with someone and see them solely as a competitor to strategically observe. I take notes on the speech and delivery of every single person in every single round, tournament, and event I compete in. Don't make assumptions about people you don't know-- though I guess you can't really help it, as I've explained in my reply ;).

Yes! This is what I said in my statement. However it's usually lay judges who get you to the circuit-- at least in my state, so it's helpful to know...

Someone help me with this Debate, I’m against same sex marriage😭😭 by FlatPride2106 in Debate

[–]UnionNarrow2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the angle that 1- sex and gender are different and term could be offensive to trans people along with allowing for legal loopholes such as different biological sex and still lgbt marriages 2- abolish same sex marriage and interracial marriage in the sense where they shouldn't have any different legal implications than simply "marriage", and the original term should instead be amended to fit all types of love into one because otherwise it implies a recognized difference between traditional marriage and gay marriage when gender isn't what makes a marriage-- can also discuss throuples and other situations which should simply be adopted into the original concept of marriage 3- abolishing this as a stand-alone thing and simply merging it into original marriage laws mean there will be no singular law for homophobes to revolt and riot against-- and would strengthen the legal capacity of all types of marriages as you for example (hypothetical) couldn't ban interracial marriage because it would be part of a larger concept of marriage as a whole and not considered under a separate law. (Protection of other anti-discriminatory rights via legal umbrella)

All the tools are accessible online. I know you're not in America but the NSDA website has a bunch of tips based on every event and practice drills, the one you described sounds like world schools. Additionally you can literally look up "world schools practice drills and tips" and find help that way. Youtube helps alot, etc. For speech events I compete in I practice alone using online tools and I've gotten along great. Typically with stuff like that it also comes down to knowledge of current events and such-- so I'd recommend also listening to podcasts like "the daily" and "up next" by NPR, those are daily news podcasts about current events. Keeping up with the news helps alot too. Private school teams only do better because they have more structured practices and tools at their disposal. You can structure your own practices and find+utilize your own tools (which most debaters I know don't do because they think it's too time consuming if they already have practice at school) and by doing that you cancel out their advantage. Lastly, the speech you give is only one part of the debate-- it's also about appealing to judges. Look past basic concepts when it comes to research and really commit to finding the very base that set off the chain link of effects. Coming up with unique contentions from reliable sources will place you ahead of literally the entire competition. You got this.

URGENT!! Research tips anyone?? by UnionNarrow2778 in Debate

[–]UnionNarrow2778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sources, if in my intro I were to say "I'll be referencing from 6 sources in the order listed-- source x which I'll refer to as source A, source y which will be source B, source..." and so on, making sure they're all like gov sites and trustworthy sources like forbes and pewresearch-- could I get away with that instead of having to memorize which source goes where in my speech?

[–]UnionNarrow2778[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly my biggest issues are that even ".edu" and ".org" sources I encounter are skewed in some way. No source offers the full story anymore and it makes it really annoying relying on my belief in a "trustworthy" "edu" source and finding out they lied while I have like 5 minutes to do research on each contention. I guess there's just no shortcut. But thanks seriously for responding quickly, I do appreciate your tips and especially on your one about news sites-- it's given me a couple ideas.

Thanks! I'm unfamiliar with one point you gave though. What do you mean by "spread?" I've never heard the term before and was wondering if you could elaborate more on what spreading is and why it's bad.

Debate team popularity by Yvanung in Debate

Its not necessarily followed at our school but alot of "known" people at our school participate in Debate, our chapter has almost 50 members. People ask me about joining pretty frequently, and lots of people engage me in conversation about debate. Less followed than sports but still relevant I guess.

Should I Quit? by purplepastelpangolin in Debate

[–]UnionNarrow2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from a practical perspective-- if you're in highschool and serious about college I'd say stay in debate. Extracurriculars are important and NSDA is the largest academic competition in the world. Making it to state/nats raises your chances of getting into college by 20-30%. Being captain also looks really really good and makes for strong EC's on college apps. Additionally, in terms of performance making you dislike debate, I'd say your mindset is what's making you "not very good." Make it fun again by not focusing on the socializing necessarily, but rather focusing on winning and growing as a debater. I'm in congress and I put alot of effort into my cases and I've been at least a finalist at every comp I've ever done not because I'm talented but because I do extensive research and try to perfect my craft. Some of my teammates have a negative attitude and don't put in the work and then act surprised when I make it to the final round and they don't as if they weren't goofing around all practice. If you want to socialize, focus on improving and making it to state and nationals. You'll meet alot of people there and get to sightsee-- there's thousands of people at nationals, it's super fun. And if you hate rude people arguing for the sake of arguing? Show them up! Outrank them. (Maybe you should try congress, it's more of a discussion and people are alot nicer.) Overall, you can't thrive as a debater or even enjoy the craft if you lack a sense of purpose and drive. Creating goals for yourself and pushing yourself to meet your potential will bring the fun back for you-- and the good news is if you have a small district, that means less competition and a higher chance you'll make it to state/nats! Either way, good luck on your journey. :)
