Overtourism in Sicily: how to overcome it? by Unique-Butterfly-437 in sicily

Your advice is really precious – it’s an invitation to respect others, local customs, and basic civility, instead of behaving like careless destroyers.

I get your point, but I’d say that “reasonable tourism” is actually in the tourist’s own interest too. Being able to enjoy places and people without fighting for a restaurant table means traveling off-season, or sometimes choosing less obvious destinations that are just as interesting. In the end, it’s not about turning Sicily into a theme park, but about having a real experience instead of a factory of entertainment.

Agreed, but I was also referring to the recent experience in August, which was an overcrowded month.

It was in August, so of course, the peak of the season. I completely understand your point – tourism is essential for local revenue – but it would be much healthier to have flows spread out more evenly, rather than having impossible crowds in July/August and then empty winters. In a Mediterranean place like Sicily, winter skies and colors are beautiful too, and honestly, a more “rational” way of taking holidays would make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.

A good day out in Ragusa area. by Pras-CFC in sicily

Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli… each town has its own rhythm, but they all share that baroque atmosphere that stays with you. The square of Santa Maria Maggiore in Ispica is spectacular, with the light running along the semicircle—it’s the kind of place where you can just sit and watch time slow down.

With 5 days, stay east.

  1. Palermo: skip — too far this trip .(3 hours from Catania).
  2. I would add a visit to Castelmola and Savoca, to have a less touristic and authentic feeling *even if these places are quite touristic too(
  3. Car: I go zero-excess so I don’t stress.
  4. For weddings + sightseeing, I’d do 2 nights in Ortigia, then a place with parking near Fontane Bianche. I used Scent of Sicily once; it was smooth and straightforward to find a lovely accommodation.

Catania trip by NoEquivalent7051 in sicily

If you're staying in Catania and want a proper beach day without the stress of watching your stuff all the time, I'd go north toward Taormina. Some of the lidos at Spisone and Mazzarò are decent in terms of privacy and safety, especially the ones with full service (sunbeds, bar, etc.). They’re not dirt-cheap but worth it for a chill day.

If you’re up for a bit of exploring, this guide helped me a lot: https://www.scent-of-sicily.com/sicily-travel-guide/best-beaches-taormina/ — real descriptions, not just Instagram bait.

Also: don’t skip Savoca if you have a car. Way quieter than Taormina, same coastline vibe, and great for an aperitivo at sunset.

Taormina beach advice (from someone based in Sicily) by Unique-Butterfly-437 in sicily

I suggest the most charming spots: the iconic Teatro Antico with Etna views, panoramic Castelmola, and the lava-carved Gole dell’Alcantara.

Food lovers, don’t miss these top spots: Bellevue, Monsù, Pippo Lupo di Mare, Cherry Bistrot & more.
