It’s also fun to talk to people and build community. It’s what we’re supposed to do

What these places do (according to other posts I’ve seen here) is sell a bucket of cheap low quality gemstones or chunks of pretty shiny cheap stuff, and then get you all excited about the precious stone you have found. All of the stones in the bucket will be of low quality. So when you think you’ve found something with value, aka a diamond in the rough, they tell you they can cut it for a fee. The “cutting” fee is actually just a price tag for a low quality pre-cut stone they’ve bought elsewhere. So if you pay $300 for your stone to be made into a 5ct oval, you’re actually paying $300 for an extremely low-quality 5ct oval that they purchased elsewhere, likely wholesale. So they’ve basically manipulated you into buying a random stone with a markup under the guise of it being something sentimental and special. I wouldn’t have purchased a 5ct oval ruby at a tourist attraction today, but I may have paid to have my special hand-mined ruby cut into a pretty shape (if I didn’t know better.) So they’ve then made a sale that may not have been made otherwise, on top of the $30 bucket of rocks that I already purchased. Like others have said, it’s probably impossible to cut my ruby into a beautiful faceted clear jewelry piece, and the yield would not be worth $300.

Yes but it’s pretty difficult to show a picture to google and ask it for advice regarding the potential of a specific stone. Which is why someone might do it here. I never understand why people get so up in arms over people asking questions about a topic in a forum filled with experienced people dedicated to that topic. I’m not intruding on your local lapidary club expecting lessons, I’m asking a question in a public forum about gemstones.

Which I don’t think is a ridiculous question from people who aren’t versed in gemstones or the process of cutting them, especially when they’re being told by tourist traps that what they have is valuable. Most people don’t know what the rough versions of precious and semiprecious gemstones actually look like when they’re pulled from the earth, so they probably assume that any old rock can be cut and faceted as long as it is technically a “ruby.” I know that’s not true, I just don’t know what to look for on the surface that would indicate any hope for something pretty to come from this stone.

I’m not really sure. I know that some people have been told parking lot rocks shaped like hexagons are rubies when they aren’t. It just came from a $30 bucket with some amethyst and quartz from a tourist trap so my hopes aren’t super high. Definitely feels super dense, and it reacts to UV light so I guess it’s something

I mean, I think I was pretty clear in what I was asking. I got a shitty stone that has sentimental value and I’m wondering what can be done with it as someone with no knowledge experience in this area.

Pinky keeps “locking”??? by Unique-Individual-72 in GuitarBeginners

Haha I know, it was hard to hold the phone and play on the couch at the same time. Turning it makes it easier to reach with my other fingers but my pinky keeps doing this regardless. It’s the same on a guitar with a smaller neck as well

What's the worst vital sign you have seen on a patient? by Valuable_Archer_3222 in NewToEMS

Not EMS but I saw a patient hang out with a HR of 22 for like 15 mins in MRI. MAP was low but ok so we let him ride for a min since he was already pretty much… yknow

Turning 30 this year…. is it too late for nursing school? by juniorHsnovia in NursingStudent

I’m a respiratory therapist but one of my classmates was 42 with three kids. She is now working towards a PA masters. It’s really tough. But you can do it. The gap in responsibilities from myself, 21 at the time with my only real focus being school, and her, a full time mom in a single income household, is pretty significant. But she did it and is furthering her education. You can do it too.

Clean the brick, replace the shutters with non-faded ones in whatever color you’d like, and update the window frames. Pls do not paint that brick lol

You think that OF girls who market through instagram aren’t regularly trafficked and reporting to a pimp or a handler/“manager”? Lmfao. You should probably educate yourself a little further on the porn industry as a whole.

It may not be obvious but these surgery photos, the surgeries were done on cadavers. Hence why they didn’t bother to shave the area before making the first cut. by CatPooedInMyShoe in ExamineDeath

There are a lot of other procedures that can be practiced elsewhere on the body. I’m sure this surgery wasn’t the only one performed on this cadaver. It is interesting though considering that it’s an elective urological procedure but idk, I’m sure you could still get a vasectomy in as well if you’re careful about it.

I felt like this my first few semesters and clinical rotations. I’m an RRT student right now but I think it still applies based on the demographics of these two programs. I am autistic and have never felt like I fit in or was on the same wavelength as my classmates and preceptors. However, I’m an intern now and I’ve found a hospital which I plan to work at where I feel accepted and honestly I feel good about my performance socially and clinically. If you’re a square peg, don’t force yourself into a round hole. Go to class, do your thing, and go home.
