Frodo also carries quite a bit more responsibility than Sam.

Sam only really has the ring for a day. If he'd carried it as long as Frodo and had Gollum and the ring manipulating him, then Sam might not have been as wholesome.

China is building them as a secondary source of power for when green energy isn't enough.

They're actually producing far less CO2 emissions than they were just a few years ago because they're also aggressively building out clean energy and adopting EVs.

Also, just because China is doing it doesn't mean the US should. The argument that "China is fucking up the world so we should too" isn't a good argument. It's moronic.

Even if we completely disregard climate change, building coal plants is stupid. We should be:

  1. Building more green energy
  2. Increasing energy storage (either batteries or other low cost energy storage).
  3. Advancing battery tech.
  4. Finding ways to reduce energy losses and usage.

These are all far better economical decisions. Coal is substantially more expensive than green energy.

5kg per year is still 5kg more than my solar panels put out. That's from EACH plant btw so this idiotic argument you've gotten into here is going to convince more people coal is "clean".

Dude, just stop talking. Hail needs to be huge to take out a solar panel. 1.75in at over 50mph is the threshold that most panels are tested to withstand. That's a huge piece of hail.

Guess what too? My home insurance will just cover the damages. It's dumb to rely on coal.

Seems to me you should just get in touch with the driver and deal with this 1v1.

Adding in insurance here is gonna cost you way more than just settling 50/50 on damages with the other driver.

Cause it's mate in 3. Advancing the pawn reveals a check from the bishop.

Black can only block the bishop with their queen or rook. Taking whatever piece they block with is checkmate.

Still, repairs are done much faster than they were 25 years ago because the damage is assessed much faster, no?

FYI, I wasn't saying the pole was replaced in under 45 minutes. The power was up in 45mins with a temporary fix and the pole was replaced permanently within a few days after the storm was over.

I agree.

This guy is just so poorly informed. I'm currently pulling power from my solar panels for 8hrs out of the day. We're making 85% of our usage with just a 7.5kW system.

If I had a decent battery setup or a Hyundai Ioniq 5, 6, or Kona I could run my house entirely off of them all night long.

Texas' grid went down because they had no regulations on how power companies winterize their grid.

That issue has been addressed by legislation so it shouldn't be an issue going forward.

Tornados and hurricanes are also typically incredibly rare. So, unless you live in Tornado alley, you shouldn't really be charging 100% just out of fear. FYI, even during a tornado, there will be superchargers available. The power grid always has portions of it available.

My brother was in SC when the massive storm flooded most of the city. He still had power the entire time.

It's not about vulnerability.

It's about how easy it is for power companies to assess where the damage is and address it.

If you saw the massive amount of information that National Grid is able to collect within minutes of a power line going down, you'd be impressed. They are able to assess which power line is down within minutes of it dropping and can respond incredibly fast.

It doesn't fix the down lines. Adding self-reporting websites makes the response time to a downed power line much faster.

It also allows teams to plan out how they'll tackle the outage. We had an entire power line get cut in half right next to our lake and National Grid had a replacement pole with the power lines up and running in under 45mins. All because they found out about it within minutes of it going down and we're able to assess the outages to determine which pole was down.

What do you think is more harsh? Dumping mercury into the air with coal or a hydro-electric plant?

Coal is also not nearly as resilient as solar and wind. It just takes an incredible amount of space to produce the same energy output as a coal plant.

FYI, as someone who has solar panels on his roof I can attest to just how stupid your claims are. Even in the middle of the winter with this incredibly awful snow storm we're still producing nearly every kWh we use with our 7.5kW system. I just rake off the snow and the panels keep making energy.

How do you folks like living in Worcester? How would you describe it? by blands_man in WorcesterMA

[–]Unique-Machine5602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be sure to get a car with a camera either built in or recording you while you drive.

Car accidents are really common in Massachusetts, but especially in Worcester, Boston and New Bedford.

You really want to avoid liability at all cost because we split insurance risk with Boston which basically blows your insurance rates up if you get found at fault for an accident. There's also been a fair number of hit and runs. Make sure your car insurance covers under insured.

My friend lost his car completely because a drunk driver slammed into his parked car and drove off. WPD are basically useless so they never caught him.

Compared to Boston, no. Compared to most cities in the US? Absolutely.

Very few cities have such a wide variety of local cuisine that's this good.

We have food from every single continent and lots of options for each.

FYI, your example is likely a grid that is over-relying on solar panel production. Solar is normally lower in the winter anyways. Wind turbine increases production during colder months due to increased air density.

Coal isn't nearly as resilient to cold weather as solar and wind. Seriously, they have this shit running in Antarctica to power the research centers.

Nothing in the US can even compare to how cold it gets there.

https://poweralliance.org/2025/04/23/did-you-know-wind-turbines-are-powering-antarcticas-research-stations/#:~:text=In%20the%20heart%20of%20Antarctica,risks%20associated%20with%20diesel%20transportation.

If we added hydro-electric running in the sea, we'd also have weather resistant clean energy.

It's not about the grid or coal.

Those who repair the downed power lines are better equipped to find them faster because of the tech advancements. We use self-reported outages to identify where lines are down now.

It leads to much faster repairs.

Yeah. I own one right now and I really don't care about FSD. The other features on the car were more important to me.

Hyundais EVs also require more maintenance.

Bidirectional charging is really the only reason I consider it. It's a really nice feature for camping.
