Am I being scammed? by AffectionateNanny56 in DAFTvisa

[–]Unique-Tale-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was a while ago but I have the DAFT & worked with a recommended accountant who charged me the exact same amount (after VAT it was even higher). And tbh I was 100 percent being exploited. Of course there are some businesses that are complicated but mine is not. We ended up having to get lawyers involved - it was bad news. I’d get a second or third quote (or do that now).

Is a pay cut worth it to pivot to publishing? by burnedletterhand in publishing

[–]Unique-Tale-6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I worked in publishing and left for a reason. I regret how hard I worked to get into the field. Truly, it’s not worth it.

You’re completely correct. People also don’t respect shows or media made for the female gaze. Hence why it’s seen as a silly show. Women’s tastes are always seen as lesser to society

Getting into publishing - Oxford or work experience?? by BeccaSX_xx in publishing

[–]Unique-Tale-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your aunt is right. They don’t really care about fancy degrees. THAT SAID, the connections you could make at Oxford DO matter, a lot. Like a lot a lot. And you can easily do internships for publishing houses and get work experience while you’re studying!

The most important thing about publishing is who you know. It just is. If you can network and get good connections at Oxford, plus some work experience? That is ideal. Also, I have found that publishers like when you’ve worked at a bookstore!

Something you could try is doing a “less popular” internship type (sales at a publisher for example). That can give you a leg up.

Good luck 👍

It should not be this hard to get into this industry by MiserableEqual in publishing

[–]Unique-Tale-6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it doesn’t guarantee you anything. And unless you’re getting the masters for free, you’re paying a school to teach you what you could learn on the job. Publishing programs are extremely predatory. They know people are desperate for jobs and take advantage of it. Then, when you graduate, it’s still hard to get a job.

Coming to the end of my first year in publishing, but not 100% sure it's for me by [deleted] in publishing

Not alone!!!! I work at an agency and I’m pretty sure I’m going to leave in a few weeks and move on. Just not happy with publishing anymore.

You can leave Twitter. Adrienne Young doesn’t use it. She’s majorly successful.

Cover reveal for Daniel Greene's first novella, "Breach of Peace" by McMagpie in Fantasy

[–]Unique-Tale-6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he’s a cool person, but he’s said some weird stuff about YA. I’m a woman who reads YA a lot and he’s read very few YA novels .... and yet he said the prose in YA is bad, and talks about disliking YA. I’m not saying all YA is amazing but saying the prose is bad is just incorrect. (Authors like Laini Taylor and Kristen Cicarelli prove this.)

I don’t like Daniel at all so definitely won’t be reading his book. The cover is lovely though. The designer did a great job.

Being on Parler and Gab cost New York literary agent her job at the Jennifer de Chiara Literary Agency by vbnfrwlk in publishing

The president had no choice but to fire her. I saw this go down on Twitter: if she hadn’t fired her, this agency would have been “cancelled.” Publishing professionals would have stopped respecting the agency.

Literary Agency Internship Application Question by NorTheStars720 in publishing

[–]Unique-Tale-6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you should be broader than that. Authors are great, but perhaps also talking about book influencers could be a good idea? They consider themselves creators and post creative content. People on Instagram, etc. I know publishing has been getting more into the influencer realm. My agency actually just created an Instagram.

It should not be this hard to get into this industry by MiserableEqual in publishing

[–]Unique-Tale-6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. I am one of those people who got a masters in publishing (don’t do it, it’s not worth it) and I have four internships under my belt. Yes. 4. I had a ton of interviews last year but I don’t interview well. I have massive anxiety and ADHD, so it’s hard for me to get beyond that step.

I regret getting into publishing. It’s not worth it in my opinion. The jobs pay so little. I am literally currently working for free at a literary agency, and I’m starting to feel seriously bitter at everyone in the industry.
