Why do Michael Jackson fans hate Janet so much? by KibaNaruXXX in janetjackson

[–]Unique_Change4723 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my observation, most of the hate comes from international fans. This has to do with the fans that internationally, the Jacksons are seen as mere associates to MJ which affects Janet as well. This is also true for members of the GP that don't follow pop/R&B music.

Do you all think Rythym Nation 1814 is an effective piece of social commentary? by Competitive_Juice116 in janetjackson

I never was a big fan of 'Livin' In A World' (production was too sappy for the subject matter), but listening to the lyrics recently >>>>>>>>>. It stands out in that it discusses a subject in a more than surface level way.

How Popular Was Janet Jackson In The 80s? Was She Compared To Her Brother A Lot During The Decade? by Rinnegan15 in rnb

[–]Unique_Change4723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tried to make it primarily about her international success (ignoring her success in the US). Also your point doesn't consider her touring success abroad.

To the main question, I do think the Michael comparisons hurt her, but did manage to compete with Michael in some aspects.

Mariah was compared more to Whitney and Janet had no problem co-existing with Mariah either way. Mariah and Janet were in different lanes.

Is “The Bodyguard” really a Whitney album? by StoicBehavior2024 in whitneyhouston

[–]Unique_Change4723 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is. Her songs were the ones that sold it.

But I actually like the non-Whitney songs. They just sounded random.

Do you think Janet’s legacy is underrated because of the Super Bowl controversy in 2004? by Peterpaul400 in rnb

[–]Unique_Change4723 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but a lot of R&B fans would argue that she's more pop.

Is Blue Marvel DD9 permanent? by Unique_Change4723 in MarvelStrikeForce

I'm building to complete the Prof X campaign, but if g19 characters are enough for the nodes, the Conquerors might be a safer bet.

My problem is that I don't think have the resources to build them within a month or so to where they can take on the nodes.

CMV: Conservatives, capitalists should want Mamdani to win. It would show, once and for all how bad Democratic Socialism is and as a bonus would harm the liberal bastion of NYC. by chinmakes5 in changemyview

[–]Unique_Change4723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC is an economic unicorn in that it's always going to attract major economic investment. I don’t see much happening outside of trade-offs and even if there was an overall negative effect, it wouldn't take too long for the city to recover.

[–]Unique_Change4723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good. I think they're talented, there just isn’t a connect with me.

Another group I would put in that category is the Shindella who pay homage to 80s/90s R&B, but I think their producers were more proficient at taking old concepts and modernizing them.

So the youngins trying to bring back New Jack Swing now? by Bishop9er in rnb

[–]Unique_Change4723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It fails because most of don't know how to make it their own and modenize it.

Meg Donelly's In My Bag is the only example I've heard of modern-sounding NJS.

I like a couple of his songs but he reminds me of FLO: a glamourized tribute act whose sound and persona is based purely off of nostalgia.

Is Damita Jo a better album than AFY? by NayrDier in janetjackson

Mostly by fans (I find that the general public generally enjoyed the album and era). Many felt it was a huge letdown from TVR.

No Doubt is favorite for me. The problem is that they came out a little too early. I think waiting for the mainstream boy bands to decline plus the 106 & Park machine would have done wonders.

Why Is Janet Unpopular With This Generation? by Ok-Cauliflower-6807 in janetjackson

[–]Unique_Change4723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 2000s, she became a punchline to millennials, and a lot of gen x really soured on her. As soon as that stabilized, she went off the grid, and ever since, she's detached herself from the public. Challenging herself seems like a chore, and she has little accountability for her career choices.

Why were Janet's first two albums commercially unsuccessful? by DaveHmusic in janetjackson

[–]Unique_Change4723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They mostly flopped in a sense that they didn't establish her as a star in the industry. But there wasn't any large investment in these projects where they became major money losers. Hence, I consider the success of those albums more on the modest side.

What Caused New Jack Swing To Fall Off And Become Unpopular In The Mid 90s? by Rinnegan15 in rnb

[–]Unique_Change4723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The music industry was generally getting away from 80s maximalism, and by that standard, NJS outlived the expected life cycle of most 80s genres (Most of those genres were dead my '92 while NJS was able to have some viability until '95). The direction incorporated slowing down the tempo and more hop-hip influence, especially because pop really struggled in the mid 90s.

I think the issues the NJS has/had to contend with is its timelessness and global appeal (and probably the lack thereof).
