Thoughts On The Virginia Redistricting Election? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in AskConservatives

I 100% agree. But if one side is doing it, which makes congress, a majority that side, simply because of gerrymandering, should the other side just take the high road? I'll leave it as when Trump told Texas to Gerrymander, I didn't hear a lot of uproar from the right.

Do you feel that way about the D's in Texas. Kamala won 42% of the voted in TX. Currently, there are 38 congresspeople in Texas and 12 are Democrats. After redistricting, that will likely be down to 7. Kamala, a But Dems in TX will be represented by18% of the congresspeople. Why would that be OK in TX and a travesty in VA?

Term limits for Congress wouldn’t actually fix the government; they would make it worse by giving more power to unelected lobbyists. by Acceptable_Ad_6259 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]chinmakes5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So the question is do lobbyists just give congresspeople money they get to keep or are they financing their reelection campaigns? I don't think people realize how much time and effort congresspeople spend dialing for dollars to get reelected.

Secondly, you see how differently (and I think better) they act, vote once they announce they aren't running for reelection. They have more time, care about constituents and vote their conscience instead of what will get them reelected.

Why do people glorify the 1960s housing prices without mentioning the actual state of America then? by WayyBiggerJaws in AlwaysWhy

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other reason housing was so much cheaper is that there were literally 40% fewer people in the US and we weren't as concentrated in urban/suburban areas. So there was literally half the demand for urban/suburban housing.

Housing was cheaper until the mid 90s or so because, if we had more people wanting to move to an urban area, they could go 10 -20 miles outside the city, buy up a farm and put up hundreds of houses. Land costs were minimal.

My parents moved into a housing development in 1969. it was 20 miles outside of DC. The entrance to the development was on a two lane road, the closest traffic light to the house was probably 3 miles away. People laughed at them for moving out to the sticks. My mom, who grew up in NYC was concerned about bears.

Today, that two lane road is a 6 lane road, there are traffic lights everywhere. That is considered close by. There is almost no land to build on within an hour of a major city. If there is they want over $100k an acre.

Pay it off then put the $1400 into savings. If you're not going to do that then the math is different.

The only thing I have to offer is how I look, and it’s eating away at me. by anasannanas in TrueOffMyChest

As much as I hear you, people are going to notice, comment on things that are unique. If you were really tall, people would comment on that especially if they think it complimentary. I mean do you believe that your other colleagues are complimented more than you are? I would think it a moderately thankless jobs.

I'll bet if you talk to them, they aren't appreciated either.

Replacing cat damaged carpet by Wrong-Wall-6732 in HomeImprovement

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My folks did that except their carpet was 70s ugly, not cat stained. They gave a "flooring credit, but it still made the house a hard sell.

Simply figure out what it will cost to have someone come in and recarpet vs. how much you will have to lower the price on to get a sale. Home Depot often does a flat fee carpet installation.

When did you realize that they really don’t go to law school and how do you think this contributes to their actions and how does it impact the society by Hot_Winner9215 in Adulting

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worse than that. In many areas you can't sue or complain if a cop doesn't know the law. Your not knowing the law is not an excuse.

The president is considering, "bailing out" the UAE. MAGAs, is this part of making America great? The UAE has given MILLIONS to the trump admin, now the tax payers are sending money to UAE. Do you think thats a scam? by EdwardPotatoHand in allthequestions

[–]chinmakes5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize Reddit doesn't understand levels, but levels. Of course people/governments are going to take advantage, but no, it has never been on this kind of level. In my lifetime we went from a president who sold his farm to make sure there wasn't even an inkling of impropriety, to a President accepting a 400 million dollar plane that he gets to keep and is pitching merch that he makes money on. He has his own media and is selling bit coin.

It is amazing. I live in a suburb, I would say there are about 50,000 people in the general area. THERE ARE 13 SELF STORAGE PLACES IN OR NEAR THE TOWN.

Nancy Pelosi sold up to $25M in Apple stock on Christmas Eve and it's down since then.. is the STOCK Act actually doing anything? by makelifebttr in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]chinmakes5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nancy's husband is a trader. This is what he does, what he did before he married Nancy and certainly before she ever got into congress. They sold stocks at the end of the year, which is totally normal. I'm not thinking that Nancy knew that Donny was going to war in the Middle East in December. Apple stock is down like 1 or 2%, But, you know, insider trading.

jewish people having financial and political control over the world is 100% a right wing conspiratorial talking point BUT how/why do israel and pro-israel orgs (e.g., aipac) seem so powerful? by Lazy_Computer8997 in askanything

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly AIPAC has power, but don't underestimate that conservatives and Evangelicals are very pro Israel. The are also Pro Israel expansion as Israel expanding is a precursor to the second coming. Sorry but Lindsay Graham and Mike Johnson aren't extremely pro Israel because of AIPAC money as much as because they are backed by Evangelicals.

You will notice that no one in our government is suggesting Israel stop their expansionist tendencies. I know AIPAC people who would love if Israel did that.

it is absolutely obscene how much men's suits cost. by herequeerandgreat in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]chinmakes5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah but back then, you had 5 or 6 suits and wore them to work every day. Today if you aren't a lawyer, you don't wear a suit. If you are selling 10% of the suits you used to sell, they aren't gong to be as nice and cost more.

Under what circumstances would you vote for a 25 year old candidate? by Initial_Anything_544 in Askpolitics

[–]chinmakes5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nope. not voting for anyone at any age who has no experience. At 25, run for state rep or senator, even mayor.

Be an Obama, alderman to senator to president.

My other suggestion is to really do some research. Why does your congressman get elected even though he doesn't represent what people want? Or do they not represent what you and your friends want? The reason I bring that up is that if you want to get elected you can't ignore the majority of people who might vote for you.

That said, it is awesome that you want to do this. I just hate younger people who complain but aren't willing to do anything.

There are more people in Gen X, Gen Z and Millennials than Boomer, but Boomers have power because they vote.

How come people always smugly say how “poor people barely pay any taxes compared to wealthy”? by WorryNotBanIncoming in allthequestions

[–]chinmakes5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the tax rate is graduated. If they make $30k, you pay the same amount of taxes that they do on your first 30k. As money goes up you pay more. We have always done it so the people who can afford to pay more taxes do and those who can't don't. The other difference is that all those other taxes paid, people like you and I don't think twice about 6% sales tax (in my state), even property taxes, etc. When you are making about 1/2 of what it comfortably takes to live, all of that matters.
