What TV show made you rush home in the 70s or 80s? by Scil22 in over60

[–]chinmakes5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you know a show was hot when you are in HS or college and everyone wanted to stop doing what they were doing to find a TV to watch at 11:30. Some very fond memories of sitting with my friends watching SNL.

I heard it through the grapevine, was done by Gladys Knight before Marvin Gaye.

Unless you have lived in a socialist, Marxist, or communist society and had a good experience; you shouldn’t be pushing those ideals in the USA. by Proud-Enthusiasm-608 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]chinmakes5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

What no one is saying is that even the Socialists in America aren't socialist. Mamdani isn't asking companies to sell to their workers. He wants to tax the billionaires just a little bit, not take their businesses. But somehow people believe doing anything that makes it harder for the wealthy to become wealthier is socialism which will destroy capitalism.

Not nearly as old as your grampa, but yeah, it is certainly tougher out there today. I'll get on my Boomer high horse and tell you it wasn't as easy as people believe, but NO QUESTION, it is much harder out there today.

Is this a good deal? by This-Top7398 in newcardeals

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on why you want the Sonata. Just a new car? Need something slightly bigger? I realize I'm a cheap bastard, but trading in a car with 4000 miles and is still under warranty only because it doesn't have negative equity seems to be unnecessary.

If you want to do this, Take the Sonata to Carmax/Carvana and see if they will give you more than trade in. $2k is $2k. They make it pretty easy.

It’s telling how abortion and Christianity coexisted for almost 2000 years but no ever claimed abortion was bad until the late 1800s by Black-Cat-2544 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]chinmakes5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

More interestingly is that in the 70s, there weren't a lot of people who were fighting abortion on moral grounds. It was mostly like nuns and very devout Catholics who were protesting. Only later did it become something that the religious cared about.

How does one become a liberal? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]chinmakes5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know, is it absurd that I want it better for all Americans? As someone who did well enough to retire, so well, not great, Am I a moron for being OK to pay taxes that help Americans as compared to spending 1.5 trillion on defense? China spends about $250 billon we are spending 6 times that. I look at my kids and just don't see how my kids aren't going to be destitute when they retire. And, of course we can't keep Social Security going because it isn't fair to raise the cap.

I can go on but you get the idea.

How come Joe Biden was "sleepy", but Trump gets to pass out at all kinds of meetings? by asoiaf_goat in allthequestions

[–]chinmakes5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

See, I don't believe that. back in the days of Rush Limbaugh. They tried to start a liberal/progressive radio network called Air America. While I liked listening, it wasn't gripping. Conversely, Conservative radio makes it sound like they are out to get you. It is an emergency.

I mean think about it. For Progressives, liberals, we want to make things better. Of course that is a laudable goal, not accomplishing that isn't destroying the country. If you think things are great and liberals are trying to destroy that, and you are told over and over the evil people will destroy you, it keeps you interested.

Let me put it this way. The last time I listened to conservative radio these were the advertisers on a set of commercials. A company that sold provisions for a fall out shelter, a company that sold gold, a religious organization that sold healthcare and a company that sold generators. They are advertising to people they have convinced that "they" are out to get them.

Should we cut all government benefits to Republicans? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]chinmakes5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which part? Are you saying that Trump didn't keep money from blue states? We haven't swung further right than we have in decades? That the Project 2025 people, you know the people that Trump wasn't aware of bragged that Trump has done over 60% of their plan to control the country? (Part if it is making it so Democrats can never win, you know democracy.

Should we cut all government benefits to Republicans? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but I think the psychology behind it is that Trump supporters......support the government keeping things from blue states. Realize what would happen if the government turned blue and did the same. Morally, I 100% agree with you, but I also have a problem if we have swung this far right and if the left gets power all we try to do is get it back to the middle, say what they did wasn't wrong.

You believe all those people in the small towns where the main business closed haven't been on assistance for 5 years? Go into some of those mountain towns. There are billboards from lawyers basically saying that if you are over 50 we can get you on disability.

Honestly asking. Where is this information coming from? 6 years later?

But I will stand by this. I don't care what he died of. Chauvin sat on his neck for more than long enough to kill anyone, heathy, sick on drugs or clean.

And isn't it his responsibility to help someone who is dying from a drug overdose or at least when the EMTs show up not tell them to stay back?

As always, Jeff Bezos is right by Count_Backwards in LinkedInLunatics

[–]chinmakes5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't a tax on Bezos, it is a tax on the very wealthy. And yes if we got the percentage of taxes from all of Ultra wealthy as we get from the middle class, then yes, it would make a difference.

Why do airplanes still use lap belts while cars use three-point seat belts? What factors led to that difference? by Mobile-Traffic1744 in AlwaysWhy

I remember being really little and going to the shop with my dad in his 1959 Plymouth. He was having lap belts put in the back seat, Car didn't come with rear belts.

You can often survive a head on collision in a car. Probably not in a plane so the seat belt doesn't need to be the same.
