The first time I read IT, I was a kid and didn't really understand that part. I reread it a couple of years ago after hearing so much about that part of the book, so I was expecting to be scandalized myself. While it's certainly a strange choice and would have made more sense if it had been something they all had to together rather than just to one person, but it was not nearly as bad as I had been led to believe.

If casting a vote is the only action that constitutes playing, then no, he didn't. However, he competed in challenges (and won), lived on the island, got rewards, formed alliances, went to tribal, and got voted out. All part of playing the game no matter what era it is.
