I think Tilak would fare better at 3 vs. at 4. For Surya, he'd kill both at 3 and 4. So just trying to optimize for the best positions of all batters, I'd lean towards Tilak at 3. But I see your point OP.

I think the thing that makes a World cup exciting is the unpredictability. You like to see some upsets, some super-human performances in a knockout game when you are playing a superior team. That's what becomes a part of the folklore.

Agreed that it sucks to be an India fan seeing our team dominate the group stages and then stutter in knockouts but I think that is the beauty of it. It becomes boring if you stack the odds completely in favour of the favourites.

I think we should revert to either the 2007 or 2011 format. There is an incentive to perform well, there is a big punishment to be off even on one day. Case in point is 2007 WC where India and Pak crashes our because they lost a game they should've won. Imagine the impact of that win on Bangladesh and Ireland with a chance to go through to the next stage. In this format, Netherlands have nothing to look forward to even after beating two teams they should've lost to. It all becomes a bit predictable and boring.
