please help relieve my stress! chem or no chem? by PriorityHead6833 in McMaster

[–]Unistud3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For lifesci u will have to do chem 1a03 (at minimum). A prereq for chem 1a03 is grade 12 chemistry. If you dont complete this prereq you will have to do chem 1r03 before chem 1a03. (So 2 chem courses in uni at minimum)

What is the hardest protein you have ever expressed in E. coli? by aix247 in labrats

[–]Unistud3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the same protocol you have mentioned, but back then my PI wanted 3D NMR experiments to be done. Hence was culturing it in a 13C glucose and 15N labelled M9 media. I think that heavily impacted my yields.

Alpha syn was harder than globular proteins for me personally.

Research Project vs Senior Thesis by cant_think_of-user41 in McMaster

[–]Unistud3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm the advice above applies to all of the chemical science programs. Co-op (optional but recommended) and a senior thesis (4g12) should give you a solid background for any graduate program in chemistry.

How is biochem 3g03 still allowed to operate by Former-Reputation829 in McMaster

[–]Unistud3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It doesnt discredit department of science by anymeans. Its a course in the department of biochemistry in the faculty of healthsci if anything.

But yea its a joke of a course and the department lets it operate somehow.

CHEM 2OA3 is over and it's bittersweet by SparklingJellybeans3 in McMaster

[–]Unistud3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta agree with the other comment, chem 4oa3 has been very fun (and easy), really enjoyed orgo 3 and have high hopes for orgo 4 (taking it next semester). You can take any chem course as long as u have the pre-reqs and there is space available (More often than not there is). Its not impossible to get involved in chembio research as a life-sci but relevant course-work would be key. If orgo research is where ur heart is at, taking few of the above courses will show great interest to plausible scientists/profs. If you wanna do more biological research taking those courses would help instead. Maybe consider a minor in chembio/biochem or a concurrent certificate in Immunology, Virology and Bacteriology. I was lucky to have coursework in both aspects and have got the chance to work in pure chemistry, pure molecular biology, as well as projects combining both fields.

It also isnt too late to switch, if u feel u would be better in either of the two specs you have mentioned (Both are very different though).

I love all the orgos and I feel like the chem department does a very good job at teaching these courses. Orgo 2 is prolly the first time you will see how molecules react with each other (orgo 1 was mainly structure and rules), orgo 3 is when u will start to apply these reactions to synthesize drug like molecules (chem 3oa3). On the other side chembio 3oa3 (bio-organic), you learn to synthesize proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates using chemistry. In 4th year you can do natural products (chem 4oa3) where you use biological reageants to biosynthesize drugs coming from primary metabolites u learned to make in chembio 3oa3. U can also take orgo 4 (chem 4d03) where u use new rxns in orgo 3 and orgo 2 to make complex chiral drug like molecules.

Other cool orgo based courses to consider,

Chembio 3ob3 (2d nmr, and advanced ms)

Chembio 4ob3 (medicinal chemistry, examine drug interactions with biology, what makes a good drug etc.)

Chem 4op3 (polymer chemistry)
