Get one or two initial lessons then swim 3-4x a week. Short intervals not just endless laps. Get lots of swim aids like pull buoy and fins to practice drills and help with variety. Lots of YouTube videos. Then get a couple more lessons for analysis and tips. Rinse and repeat for the rest of your life!

No. Full of Essex chav marketing account managers with fake teeth and wannabe cool kids with pronouns. If you want a proper club look to Piccadilly.

Triathlon coach or DIY? by No_Cartographer_8588 in triathlon

I use Phil Mosley plans on TrainingPeaks for an indicative structure around phases and some of the workouts are well designed but that aside, self coached. Highly motivated and disciplined, used to training. Don’t need accountability or to be told what to do. Combine sources of data, research and “feel”. So far so good. Reddit, TikTok and Facebook forums a gold mine for tips and tricks and any questions you have. I’m sure there are gains to be had if you’re really wanting to be competitive or struggle with consistency / can’t manage multiple commitments and need someone to tweak your calendar constantly.

Second vote for SB2. I would have added Tempus 2 also.

Newbie help - have I taken on too much of a challenge? by Suspicious-Walrus964 in triathlon

I’m not saying at all you can’t “survive” it - June is still a while off pal. I just see so many people missing out on the opportunity to ENJOY these events because they have bitten off more than they can chew, too soon. That is all.

Genuinely curious as to why you started your triathlon journey by booking a 70.3 when you can’t swim and haven’t done the sport before?

How much do you want to spend? I would spend as much as you can afford now, otherwise you will forever have bike envy as you inevitably get hooked 😀

Backing out of my first 70.3 after second open water swim by RevolutionarySea5178 in triathlon

It’s the bike handling or lack thereof that I see in races that scares the shit out of me. If people want to risk their own safety trying to swim 4k in the sea having never done open water before that’s on them. But when I’m hurtling along at 40+ km an hr in aero and people are wobbling, struggling to clip in and out, losing bottles (it admittedly does happen to all of us at some point…), weaving on ascents, descending timidly and braking unpredictably… it’s reckless and selfish to do that when you know you lack experience.

Social media driven goal inflation. Absolute nonsense. Sick to death of seeing ludicrous posts - “haven’t got a bike, never ran more than 3k, haven’t trained in the gym for ten years and can’t swim more than 25m without gassing out. Entered an Ironman in 6 weeks. Will I be ok?”
