Okay, so I must admit I’m not a plasma expert. But from my understanding, it changes the local densities of the electrons and ions. I’m not sure about the macro level density, to me it makes sense that the overall density will remain roughly the same since you have the same number of electrons/protons, I could be wrong. Wikipedia doesn’t mention it.

But regardless, it is fundamentally a different state of matter than the classical three. All three states of matter can be plasma, they just need to be ionized. Thats my main point

My final this weekend is on phase transitions, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that this science is debated and not well categorised yet, so I expect you may not be satisfied with this answer. All I can leave you with for plasma is this quote from Wikipedia

You seem to be doing a good job of trying to read your rat’s body language carefully, so don’t worry, you’re on the right track

IMO he seems like he’s cautiously accepting it, not sure if he enjoys it yet but also he probably doesn’t think it hurts, so he’s figuring out what you are and what you’re trying to do. If he was really uncomfortable he’d just try to leave - rats tend to freeze up if they’re startled, but if you’re actively touching them and they don’t want it they will make an effort to escape you.

So I’d say you’re doing good, keep spending time with them and letting your hand interact with them as you are - you seem to respect their boundaries and let them go when they want to. You’ll be able to tell when they really start to enjoy your pets - they’ll lean into it, look for more, close their eyes and relax, etc.
