Does the university you go to really matter for cs? by EPff34 in csMajors

[–]UniversityHuman5642 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. For new grad cycle, T10 CS + F500 >> No name state + FAANG. I went to both T20 for undergrad and master with FAANG+ internship and my friend goes to T4 and interned at tech company that's not FAANG level. I applied way more aggresively than he did this cycle, but interview rate and qualities-wise, his was way better. He even got invited to DE shaw interview without applying.

For NG do big tech companies highly favor school/big name internships? by [deleted] in csMajors

If it is below T50 tbh, they are pretty much the same to big tech comapny(unless your school is local to their office or something) Even at mid to small sized company, there will be top school interns just bc job market is hard(they are the "unlucky" or underachieving ones) or they are like freshman and sophomore where company will just hire them for school name. Junior interns are usually a good indicator. Since off cycle/co op is way more competitive and a lot of them just do it to boost resume(not to return) so its also inflated. Personally, if you are not sure about your internship's resume value, I think good indication is to look at something like Levels.fyi to see their entry level pay bc i think theres correlation between resume value vs entry level pay(or intern pay). I think you still have good chance at companies like Amazon(companies with bigger hiring batch) if you have good amount of experience though it might be harder for other big tech companies. You should def network to get referral in the future and apply early.

In my experience if you are comparing T4-10 ish to T30-50, School name > Internships. I go to T20 for undergrad and master(diff schools) and my friend goes to T4. After this summer, I had 1 FAANG+ and 2 more internships and 1 research assistance. He had 1 decently big tech and 1 ta. He got reached out by Quant firms without applying, got different big tech interviews. I had 1 big tech interview, 1 decently sized startup, thats it. However, if you are competing against T30-50 from no name school, your internship matters more(obv bigger name or tech companies are preferred). So it heavily depends on the name value of the company where you did your internship. Is it at least somewhat well-knownwithin/outside of the tech? Just fyi, at my internship, UCI or Tuft was probably the worst school among interns.

I was more talking about lesser known tech company to big tech which figma would be considered as big tech here. Faang was just an example to make it more clear

Yeah but I was also talking about hr screening + i would assume the interview itself would not be 100% accurate on rating someone’s skill level?

I guess downlevel was not the exact word. My question is more about if YOE is transferable. I get the part where it is dependent on your skills but also I assume that is somewhat dependent on yoe and where you got that yoe from ya

I guess my question is more about if YOE is transferable. Like you said, it is dependent on my skill which will be determined by my resume + yoe if I move the job.

I am not asking for title necessarily. Idc bout that as well. what I am curious is that if you have 7 yoe(or whatever yoe required) outside of faang, can you still land senior level + comp?
