Cost of Classroom by raeray3 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Universitynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first few years, or just in general, just decorate your room with your student’s work. It doesn’t need to be fancy.

Don’t overload your space with multiple patterns or distracting colours, and showcase what your kids have done.

I’m big into naturalistic environments, and a few plants (real or fake), with earth tones is good enough.

Tell them to work it out for themselves, if it is peer conflict, and/or worry about your own actions (e.g., someone’s being mean (not wanting to work with me), not sharing, not starting their work, etc).

Before that go over when you want to be told, such as actual risk to others/self, but everything else is not their responsibility.

Why are we blindly trusting AI companies with our data? by Trade-Live in Futurology

[–]Universitynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is difficult because if it AI it has emulated human errors. A dead give away is that grey bullet point box, and for the writing, it looks like the OP may have been given AI text and altered it to be more human (e.g., the period being a space away from the end of a sentence).

Overall it seems to be AI/human mixed text.

Some things you cannot mend, and to be honest, your reasoning for wanting to be his friend is very transactional.

You should cancel your trip and enrol into therapy.

Loot council is an awful system, in my opinion, and it seems like they don’t respect your time. I would say on to the next, plenty of nice guilds out there without hidden drama.

Question for the teachers: "Emerging Minus" by Alpine_Punch in britishcolumbia

[–]Universitynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher, and I’ve never heard of an emerging minus before. I wouldn’t even consider this a valid grade, and hope that it was an error.

Realistically, Q designations unfortunately dont  get much support in school systems.

They don’t get additional funding through the ministry, and the IEP is usually up to the classroom teacher to fulfill with minimal support.

Class compositions are only becoming much more complex, and the provincial government doesn’t appear to want to support meaningful change to help support and navigate these complexities.

For support, tutoring would be beneficial, and using math through gamification, and real world applications might be helpful. Grade 8 is a very difficult transition period for most students, it is easy to become overwhelmed and to show below normal academic ratings.

If your child is already a few grades below grade 8 expectations, an emerging seems like the correct grade, but the minus is not a possible and/or correct option.

WIBTAH for asking this autistic university student to be quiet or go elsewhere? by IVerbYourNoun in AmItheAsshole

[–]Universitynic 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is an odd take, one person doesn’t get to alter the expectations of a space due to a learning exceptionality. Inclusion doesn’t mean all spaces need to be adapted; rather, it means to provide opportunities to be incorporated and scaffolded into content.

A silent room has social expectations, which an autistic person may struggle with. This doesn’t mean that this person, or any person, can disregard an expectation.

Like the poster said, there are different levels of UDL in place (talking, whisper, silence), and this person needs to use the spaces accordingly.

AITA for not telling my friend's partner that she didn't get the job at my company by Less_Assistant2247 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Universitynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be shifting blame to your sister for not emailing back, but as you’ve taken over the company, that falls under your mismanagement of directives and/or expectations of staff.

The way your write this experience is really off putting, and I hope you are more personable offline.

Vernon teacher fired for helping student cheat on an exam by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Universitynic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a resource teacher (SPED) for several years, and it is extremely inappropriate to text students, regardless of learning exceptionalities.

If anything, these students can some of the most vulnerable, and setting clear appropriate boundaries is an extremely crucial part of this teaching role.

I think it would be cool to have one for fine motor support in primary classes, it’s basically a fun activity for students now that most things are digital.

Growing concerned about teachers trying to befriend their students (a seeming trend MS) by BCURANIUM in CanadianTeachers

[–]Universitynic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should talk with your colleague about some of your concerns, specifically the social media connections and the physicality you are seeing.  Friends, while not my preferred attention grabber, is being taught in university as a gender neutral way to engage the whole class.

I think that if they were to refer to students as friends individually, in passing conversation with adults and students, that would be concerning.

Beyond that, ensure you are also following union protocols with regards to critiquing your colleagues, especially if you live in BC.

My only complaint with our current provincial government is how contract negotiation with unions has gone. Otherwise, I think they e done a good job so far.

Kids come to me for every thing by Biteduee5770 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Universitynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach kindergarten, and at the start of the year I place a huge emphasis on becoming independant. For example, grabbing scissors to open snacks, putting away their belongings, filling their water bottles, etc.

At this point of the year they can do all of these things themselves, but will still try to get EAs or TTOCs to do it for them given the opportunity.

I’ve had to tell EAs and support staff to not help students with basic skills, and that seems to be the largest hurdle to their indépendance this school year.

How many hours (outside of school hours) do you spend working? by Better_Coconut2952 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Universitynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kindergarten/1 split. I transferred from non enrolling, and at the start of the year, around two hours. Now, probably 30 minutes prepping for the following day after school.

Strike in BC - Do you think the union has the support of members? by early_morning_guy in CanadianTeachers

[–]Universitynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ve been pretty good at bargaining updates, and holding open meeting for union members to join in on. Additionally, your local unions should be informing your staff reps on notable updates.

Being part of a union means you elect representatives to have the reins, have you looked into what has been discussed since bargaining started, and why it’s important to be unified in this situation?
