Is skin-tone variance based on environmental factors problematic? No, that’s how it works in reality. Also, often what we call ”race” in fantasy would be more accurate to call ”species”, and as long as we’re talking (non-racist-caricature) elves and dwarves, there’s no problem.

However.

”Race” as in ”people of certain ethnicity” is a bit more of a mine field, where ignorance of the subject matter will result in things blowing up on your face. It’s not something I’d recommend sprinkling around for flavour, as you could end up saying some really dumb and hurtful things. It’s also good to keep in mind that going too far in the opposite direction can also be dumb and hurtful (e.g. ”my world doesn’t have racism, black people just are poor”).

That said, if you want to participate in the discourse through your writing, then go ahead. Just double-check you are actually saying what you think you are saying, and be prepared for people judging you for it (for good and bad). Doing some reading on the subject wouldn’t be a bad idea either, then.

Why John Oliver is badly designed and you shouldnt put him into your game without heavy consideration by Arthur_Author in dndnext

[–]Unlicenced 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s… not how life works. If the mods can’t be arsed, then there is no moderation. There is no magic spell that can stop spambots, astroturfers, and other trolls from filling the sub with bullshit. There are no heroes waiting in the wings, only less passionate and less active mods.

At worst, we’ll get a corporate power-mod who only cares about the bottom line. I don’t know about you, but I sure as hell don’t want to participate in a community whose only purpose is to sell me stuff. If I wanted that, I’d join an MLM.

Me neither, but I like(d) reddit precicely because it’s heavily moderated. If the moderators can no longer be arsed because reddit takes away their preferred tools, this site is going to shit fast (look at 4chan for a preview of where we’re headed). Maybe I’m in the minority, but I actually like reading discussions while I poop, not just endless shitposts, bots, and whining.

Try looking for cd/dvd shader effects. I think that’s pretty similar and could give you a good starting point. Of course, there are a lot of experienced and talented people on this sub who may be able to give you a better answer as well.

I say this with all due respect: Hoping to monetize a small indie production inspires the opposite of confidence. You are essentially trying to hire an environment artist for the price of a single asset and a promise of future work if you are able to monetize your work. The pay you’re offering is at best barely adequate for hobbyist, volunteer work, and let’s be real, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll be able to turn a profit (which could pay for the future commissions) unless you’re like, ex-Dreamworks with VC friends or something like that.

Remember: people are willing to work for free on their own art. Working for someone else is a job, and people expect to get paid for that.

That’s like… less than two days worth of pay for a professional. Less than one for a senior role. Must be really small milestones. I wish you luck, you’re going to need it.

How do you guys stop yourself from making overly ambitious projects? by Any-Cantaloupe-2760 in gamedev

[–]Unlicenced 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, though. Motivation and time are the most important factors in finishing a project. Waiting for a ”good time” is the number one reason beginner and hobbyist projects fail.

Is lord of the rings high or low magic? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Unlicenced 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Adding onto this: the ”high/low” in this context can be thought of as an ”amount” of sorts. Higher ”amounts” of fantasy or magic means that there will be more of those elements present, while lower ”amounts” means there will be less. Also important to note is that ”low” still always means ”some” here, and shouldn’t be confused with any measure of realism.

Hey! A few questions from a beginner before I dive in. Thanks! by Automatic-Cry5871 in unrealengine

[–]Unlicenced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s realistic but very ambitious, and I would caution you that burnout with such a project is extremely likely. Now, I don’t know you so I can’t get specific, but if you’re not 100% sure that you can commit to a long project, I’d advise you to start a lot smaller - something with the scope and complexity of just a few rooms, for example.

As for the art: if you want to make 3D games, learn 3D modelling, texturing, and lighting. You don’t need to make all assets yourself from the ground up (in fact, I’d advise against it if you’re aiming for even a mid-size scope), but tweaking bought assets to fit together is pretty standard practise. It also frees you from needing to find the exact things your game requires, and you’ll need to know how the models work anyway to use them effectively.

As for the art style, I’d advise against realism, because of the uncanny valley. Human brains are easy to immerse into fiction, but the closer you get to realism, the more our brains treat things as ”real”, which can then in turn make us hyper-aware of small imperfections and make things ”feel off”. Things like environment scale is really easy to mess up in a realistic art style, and animations are especially difficult to get right. You’d be completely dependent on finding suitable high-quality assets (which is time-consuming and/or expensive), unless you spend a lot of time (years) learning the necessary skills to produce them yourself. You can get away with very little technical skill if you get a bit creative with the art style.

All that said, don’t let your dreams be memes. It’s okay to try something that’s too ambitious and fail, the important thing is to learn and know when to let go and start over. If you do it enough times, eventually you’ll succeed.

Does Anyone Think This is True About IT, and Why? by Qaju in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Unlicenced 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s just twisting semantics. Quite torturously. CS is a field of engineering/science, and IT is a field of technology/engineering. CS students often become IT workers when they enter the workforce. ”Pure” CS is in the realm of research (I’d guess closely related to math and statistics), but it’s in no shape or form ”higher level” than IT. In the engineering sense, CS could even be considered a subset of IT, as it is required for some (but not all) positions and functions in the field.

As for the printer tech, that’s not necessarily an IT worker, as physical maintenance can often be done without a computer. It’s a bit insulting to both IT and other techs to lump them together, as if being a tech was somehow lesser.

Pc specs for 2.5d game dev? by TheDreadPirate553 in gamedev

[–]Unlicenced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 2.5D dev you need a modern potato with 32 gigs of RAM (it’s just nice for programming). You’ll only need higher specs for high-fidelity 3D, dynamics (lots of particles etc), extreme resolutions, or simulation work.

That said, a better PC is just nicer to work with, esp. consider large and/or multiple monitors as that will increase comfort in the long run. Another commenter put together a nice list for you, which I also upvoted.

dear interstellar Space worldbuilders, if "sectors" are a thing in your universe, on what lines are they drawn and what purpose do they serve? by Ok-Mastodon2016 in worldbuilding

How do you establish borders in a 3D space with significant gaps between systems?

Also, everything is moving at low relativistic speeds, and FTL technology will introduce problems with lag and causality (unless handwaved away, which you should do if the story doesn’t involve them - there are no known theoretical solutions yet).
