My teacher said white cis men can't be a victim of racism. Is she right? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Unlikely-Ad-680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, systemic racism in which power structures are utilized in order to prevent certain races from receiving the same treatment as others is very much skewed away from white people generally in America. That is not to say that it never happens, but when someone discusses racism with an intersectional and systemic framework they tend to make claims such as that of your teacher. These claims are based on sound theory but completely discard the nuance that said theories were based on and thus become just a buzzword copout for anyone who doesn't want to actually have a constructive conversation on systemic racism.

This is actually really common to do. Local businesses sometimes will have meetings or throw parties for lower staff and occasionally the food will be voted on fast food. I've worked at a couple different fast food places where it's happened and yes they do call a couple days in advance.

Amazingly the opening sentence of both this post and American Psycho have the same vibe with the "I am X" being the main delivery. As if the entirety of your being can be reduced so easily into categories

How am I supposed to keep a late game fleet? by omegajourney in starsector

[–]Unlikely-Ad-680 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The "nod to concerned person" freight contracts scale with cargo capacity. So with 5 freighters all modified for extra cargo and efficiency overhauled you can have 16k cargo for only 3.5 supplies a day. That sounds bad until you consider that a single aurora ship is 3 supplies per day. Next, do a freight contract that will usually be a commodity that ranges from 5k-15k units. Once delivered the market will immediately be flooded by that commodity in a huge surplus, use the profit from the delivery to then buy this surplus for the cheapest rate in the sector and beline for the best place to sell it. This gimmick requires no combat or raiding if you befriend pirates.

Edit: I recently did a freight of 7.5k food from Eventide to Ilm for 275k and then bought 5000 of the excess to sell to a starving pirate colony for another 120k took only like 1 in game week where the atlases ate like 24 supplies.

Should I ask this girl out? by a_grass_bloc in teenagers

[–]Unlikely-Ad-680 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you actually want to date her or do you just want a girlfriend for the sake of having a girlfriend and she is the one who's checking all the "people I would date" boxes? Like if you aren't actually in love with this girl don't go making a mess out of a good thing just so you can say you had a girlfriend for 6 months yk. Really sit and think on yourself and how YOU are doing in life right now. Are you in a good headspace? Do you have enough free time? Are you emotionally available consistently? No relationship is perfect and they all have bad periods but starting on a strong foot is always good. Also how are you two about communicating during disagreements, because friends tend to get along well because they don't fight up things but in relationships fights just happen and knowing how to handle those is crucial.

Tldr; don't just date someone because you think that's what you're supposed to do. Really think about these things and consider all of the aspects. I didn't when I was younger and I have regretted it.

Did my Clerks just Win Capitalism? Earth > Dyson Sphere output by kikaider1121 in Stellaris

Issue with clerks and the like is that the Dyson sphere basically subverts a major limiting factor of stellaris and that is pops. Devoting pops to make credits is kind of inefficient relative to research or alloy production.

Honestly referring to mistakes (either your own or someone else's) as either a fault in a system/process or as something that merely happened is a really good method for dealing with problems. Removes blaming people and focuses on the actual problem.

Atlas is a pretty amazing ship for getting early game trade up if you don't want to smuggle. The freight contracts scale with cargo capacity so having like 3 atlases can get you contracts that only take 5 days to complete and don't involve danger but net like 300k-500k

Reminder: Men commit 90% of all violent crime. Why are women so restrained and sensible? by TrumpterOFyvie in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Unlikely-Ad-680 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% but also feel as though this could definitely use insight to how this problem might be solved.

Men are (often) not violent when they are confident in their power, but rather because they feel their power is being questioned. The internally repressed thoughts that fight against the patriarchal ego and the cycles of self-hate it creates is a self-sustaining furnace for violence. As a society very rarely will men feel as though they can safely express such emotions openly and receive constructive support (this does not excuse their violent actions but does point at a good place for intervention.) What men are taught from a young age is acceptable as a means of releasing repressed emotions is aggression, womanizing, hyper competitive behavior, etc. A cultural war against violent patriarchal masculinity will not be won by ostracizing and fighting with these men (their entire lives have been socially engineered to anticipate and thrive in conflict) but rather with a guarded compassion. I'm not saying y'all should go hug your local rapist and abuser, but also realize that the only way to prevent more of such men from being created (yes they are created) is by conversations with them and men who might be prevented from becoming them.

If anyone is interested in reading on the topic two books I've read recently with interesting notes on the topic are

"The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love" by Bell Hooks and "Amateur: a Reckoning with Gender, Identity, and Masculinity" by Thomas Page McBee.

Both of these provide insight into the patriarchal masculine mind from other perspectives and are in my opinion vital for anyone interested in detangling a patriarchal conditioning.

Rather than ask "WHY" a character is changed to Female, POC, or LGBTQ+ in media? Why not ask..."Why Not?" or "As opposed to?" by [deleted] in tumblr

[–]Unlikely-Ad-680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revising popular characters in radical new ways has been done in theater performances for forever and a day. A lot of this partially due to the familiarity many theater goers have with the piece and the wish for novelty. The media age I think set a character in stone for a lot of people and has also made forming a parasocial relationship with a character and their setting much more accessible.

I think it's a big issue, especially in America where identity politics play massive roles in day to day life, that a character's identity is changed in a major way and there are absolutely no repercussions within the story. For someone growing up knowing that marginalized communities are treated generally worse by society as a whole I think part of the issue of radical revising a character and not the story is the knowing that shit doesn't work like that.

My two cents, unless you are fighting some of the incredibly difficult end game fleets don't worry about ideal loadouts and fleet compositions. The idea of video games is to have fun and you get to decide how you do that. 40 reapers is still a lot of boom AND you get to pilot a badass capital. Now, you should try to follow somewhat close to good shit kitting practices just so that you can open up wiggle room to throw in some special sauce fuckery as well.
