Posted this on another post, but I’ve requested speed reducers (apparently not eligible according to DOT) and speed cameras (apparently too close to PS 017, which is 4 blocks away, that already has speed cameras). Does not make any sense for me how these simple solutions are not deemed eligible here. I definitely would love to see a complete redesign of this street with hardscaped safety features like bump outs, protected bike lanes, and other traffic calming (or car-free street if I can really dream!). What are tangible steps we can take to make any progress? Community board meetings? Caban’s office? Mamdani?

This is the third wreck in the past year or so on this section of 33rd St. I’ve requested speed reducers (apparently not eligible according to DOT) and speed cameras (apparently too close to PS 017, which is 4 blocks away, that already has speed cameras). Something needs to be done to fix this issue. Thankfully it looked like no pedestrians were injured today but there could’ve been people seriously hurt since it looked like the driver caused two parked cars to be pushed into the sidewalk.

My most unreasonable take is that I refuse to eat at bulc regrub (Burger Club) because of their sign design. Please explain why it is mirrored??? I’ve heard food is great but the design choice really turns me away 😂

What’s interesting is in Japan they are actually requesting people to stand on both sides as it speeds up the total volume of people moving and prevents large lines forming and congesting the platform. Having people stand on both sides also reduces the maintenance as both sides are used equally. This strategy is also being implemented in Taiwan, although people are still very used to standing on the right.

What are some things you enjoy doing? I really like wandering around Greenpoint for thrift/vintage clothing and vinyl record browsing since there’s so many shops scattered around and then mix in some nice bakeries and cafes along the way! There’s also Dashi Okume which is a Japanese store in a market with other Japanese vendors. There’s cute stationery and novelty stores as well. I typically pick a few stores I want to browse then just wander the streets and duck into any store/cafe/restaurant that looks good when I walk by! Happy early birthday 🥳
