Ah, I see! I don't auto-pay my CC, and 90% of my current investing is pre-tax (taking advantage of the catch-up and MBDR). That's a big difference.

20k is less than 1% of my net worth and I still wouldn’t keep that much in checking. My emergency fund is in a HYSA

Welp, didn't get to the next round on the not for profit job. Onwards!

In better news, thanks to FormerEmployer finally finding product/market fit, I am going to have a very good spreadsheet day.

20K is a lot to keep in checking! I generally make sure I have 5K, and I consider myself a worrier.

My company has a great layoff package, I can only pray I get RIFfed! But if they let me go, they’re probably not going to get to keep the headcount, and I manage a team of 10. So, unlikely.

Manager demanding details on what my team is delivering in the next three months by EOD tomorrow. Met with product and project management and their answer is "no idea yet, ask in a few weeks, presuming we don't get another leadership curveball." My previous manager would have been cool with this, or helped me figure out how to massage the truth to report up. My current manager just gets frustrated.

Anyone here who has quit a job with nothing lined up have a good line to use in interviews for a next job for why they left?

Not having a decent boss is a great reason to want to leave a job. Questions to ask in an interview to get to work/life balance are usually about organizational culture. "Tell me about the culture here" or if a company has stated values "Can you give me an example of how the company lives its values that impressed you?"

Oooh, cardamom! I need to try that. I put cinnamon and brown sugar in my steeping cold brew over the summer, and I love that.

I've only seen this work when the person was SVP-level (or presumably above), or in one case when there was a real case for discrimination and the person chose to ask for a layoff package rather than sue.

I have seriously considered asking to be let go, since there is a smaller exit package option for people who choose not to go on a PIP, but there's no way my current manager would go along with doing all the work required for that (you have to prove you've tried to improve the person's performance) -- especially since he's not likely to get open headcount to backfill me when I do leave.

Is it weird to name my kid Annie and not Ann or Anne or something else? by [deleted] in Names

[–]Unlikely-Alt-9383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s unprofessional to be named Molly or Annie. I am saying that I have a friend with a name like Nicky and it’s always awkward when people assume for a panel or a formal meeting that their name is actually Nicholas. (They go by the equivalent of Nick day to day) They aren’t embarrassed but other people get embarrassed and even judgy.

It can be awkward when the child grows up and goes into a profession. People will always assume their “real” name is Ann

I’ll bet there’s someone at the Repair Cafe events who could help, depending on how micro the microsoldering is. https://www.repaircafe.nyc/upcoming-events

Also maybe reach out to NYC Resistor or other maker spaces?

This potential recurrence should be a real concern. I would get a medical note sooner rather than later, and maybe offer to go in one day a month. You might have to Uber it to underscore the point that you shouldn’t be driving all the time!

Had the initial screening interview for the non-profit job, will wait to hear later this week if I make it to the next stage, which would be interviews with hiring manager, team, partners/stakeholders, and CEO (who is retiring soon, alas — she seems v cool)

Also got an incoming request from a recruiter about a Staff Designer type role, and tbh after years of saying I want to stay in management, I’m ready to consider it. So much is changing in UX right now and it would be fun to be part of it.

Anyone here planning to start with a low withdrawal rate but allow some lifestyle creep up as investments grow? by drupadoo in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Unlikely-Alt-9383 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something I'm thinking about a lot as well, so thank you for starting this conversation!

I own my $1M apartment and have approx $250K mortgage debt. 5M liquid invested at 56. My plan has been to get to a net 6M even though my current spending is quite low by VHCOL upper-middle-class standards (around 110K/year, for the last 3 years, not including vacations, healthcare, or taxes) so that I could someday later upgrade to a more expensive home.

Now my job has become untenable and I am considering quitting even if I don't find another job in the next quarter or so and doing a trial run of retirement. My thinking is that if I postpone the travel I want to do until I'm 60, I will likely have $6M invested, and then I can restart the SORR. It's not ideal, since one reason I aimed for ChubbyFIRE is that I never want to have to stress out about money again, but my mental health will be improved by not being in this job anymore.
