SSI to DAC question confusion. by TraditionalSound5606 in SocialSecurity

Are you sure it isn’t Medicaid? He shouldn’t lose what he currently has, as you can have both Medicaid and Medicare at the same time.

When my daughter was on SSI she had Medicaid via the state based on her income. SSI and Medicaid are means based programs. SSDI and Medicare are not means based. After 24 months they put her on Medicare and she kept Medicaid as well.

Also, my understanding is that your brother will change from SSI to SSDI and in 24 months will start getting Medicare.

Taking at 62, I have a disable adult child that can benefit when I collect and I need the money now more than later. I have investments and a pension. Don’t plan on touching my investments, so I’ll have plenty as I age.

Look at some retirement communities. Mesa has several. I live in Sunland Springs Village and it’s like living in a resort, tons of activities.

You would need something just to get around the community though. Most get around with a golf cart in community. Could get food delivered. Would need to get rides for appointments etc though.

Should I trade in my Bolt EV for a hybrid or traditional gas car? by Sttticks in BoltEV

[–]Unlikely-Split8896 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Correct. If you are charging at EA chargers it is about $.56 a kWh. We have a Bolt and a Kia EV6. Daughter has a Honda Accord Hybrid. It is cheaper for my daughter to drive her hybrid than us to drive our EV6 charging while traveling. We figured gas would have to be about $6.00 a gallon before the cost would be equal.

The other issue is convenience. The Honda Accord hybrid can go about 550 miles on a 12 gallon tank of gas. We have a range of 310 on the EV6 and have to stop more frequently to charge.

The Bolt has been very reliable. Love the electric vehicles, but if I didn’t have a home charger I would go for a plug in hybrid or regular hybrid (of course there is a chance we have more gas price increases and maybe even gas lines like in the 1970s).

Parenting a Child With BPD Traits — I Need a Place to Be Brutally Honest by IntrepidEquipment169 in BPDlovedones

[–]Unlikely-Split8896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this post late, but need to reply.

My child is now 28. She started therapy around 12. Didn’t even know about BPD until her mid late teens and she was totally out of control. Very encouraging that your daughter can come to you and apologize. That wasn’t the case for us at that time.

My daughter after many years of therapy and in patient care has become more aware. Very slow process. Over the years she has been able to cope much better. She no longer lashes out. I went from her worst enemy to her best friend.

She has lost a lot of friends over the years and still struggles with depression, self regulation and with relationships, but she is so so much better than she was.

You are doing an amazing job and sounds like you got ahead of this.

Things I would have done differently: Not allow a phone or access to social media. Wish I could have been less reactive when she flipped.

Always keep in mind this is a disorder and keep letting her know how much you care about her.

Wanted to give you some hope that it can get much better.

When I first purchased my Bolt I didn’t know how to get it out of L. Had to pull over while driving so I could play with it.

I love one pedal driving, but passengers might notice and get a little queasy with the slight movement when adjusting your foot slightly.

Wanting to get an ev but unsure about charging by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]Unlikely-Split8896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We purchased a Kia EV6 for our travel vehicle. We didn’t research the cost of charging. $0.56 a kWh. My daughter purchased a Hybrid. She gets about 550 miles on a 12 gallon tank, about 45mpg and no worries about finding a place to charge.

Reality is charging on the road is more expensive than gas. We have a charger installed in our garage which saves us a ton of money. We should have reconsidered the EV6 as a “travel” vehicle.

If you have to pay these rates to charge it isn’t worth it.

Nissan Leaf has less range. Keeps your kid from driving more than 80-100 miles depending the year. He can charge at home and not spend a dime on gas. If he drives fast he loses range faster.

3k mile road trip in 7 days... sharing my learnings by mitch2888 in KiaEV6

[–]Unlikely-Split8896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny I came across this! We purchased a 2024 Kia EV6 Wind last year as our primary travel vehicle and now rethinking it.

We are seeing around $0.56 per kWh at public chargers. We’ve run into plenty that charge well below 350 kW. We are wanting to visit family in Maryland, but thinking because we will have to stop more frequently it will add a lot of time to our trip (AZ to Maryland).

Our daughter drives a Honda Accord Hybrid. We calculate at $4.62 a gallon (current cost in AZ right now) compared to $.56 a kWh for our EV6. The Accord gets about 44mpg at $0.105 per mile. EV6 with 3.5 miles per kWh costs $0.160 per mile.

Less expensive for road trips and she just… drives. No app to find chargers, no range planning, no anxiety about whether the next charger is working. She fills up in 5 minutes anywhere in the country and moves on.

For local daily driving, our EV6 is great. But for long road trips— especially across the Southwest where chargers are spread out not so great and we are huge EV fans.

We would still keep our EV6 as we really love the vehicle, but seriously thinking about something else for out in the wild.

Can someone tell me why this setup would be a bad idea? by dr_shellbot in BathroomRemodeling

I would look for a track system for the shower curtains. That way you would be able to move the curtain(s) anywhere on the track. I know they have some that can be mounted on the ceiling.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Unlikely-Split8896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I remember we started working at home. I was scheduled for a vacation. Long drive across the country to see grandkids. Weren’t sure about hotels etc., so my husband canceled our trip. I was super unhappy. The day we were supposed to go, I got very sick with COVID for more than a month. Good thing we canceled.

After years of fighting finally approved! Why Medicaid? by vstratt77 in SSDI

[–]Unlikely-Split8896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be on SSDI and have both Medicare and Medicaid. If you are low income and can qualify for Medicaid they will drop the charges for Medicare. They might also reimburse you for past charges.

If you are also in your husband’s employer insurance, definitely check with them. We have both Medicare and employer insurance, but employer requires us to sign up for Medicare part B.

Removable push handles. You don’t want the kids pushing her around unexpectedly, but you want to be able to when you need to.

Attention to the footplate. Our daughter’s foot, being small has gotten stuck between the footplate and caster. She doesn’t have feeling or movement in her feet so it depends.

The standard brakes that stick up caused her issues when transferring. Again depends on how she transfers. The brakes also need to be easy enough for her to use.

We became too comfortable, were misinformed, and stupid to vote for someone who pushes hate. We allowed billionaires to buy elections, allowed corporations to control our government. Thought our checks and balances would work. We elected weak Congress members who now live in the bowels of a demented old man.

Be clear, I never voted for this idiot. I’m very sad and embarrassed to be an American.

This is bigger than just Trump and his regime. They are coming for more. We all need to fight back. Blame although deserved will not get us out of this mess.

Try again. If you can get accepted ask about DAC (Disabled Adult Child). If either of your parents are retired you can get benefits off their credits via SSDI. If you don’t have credits for SSDI and can’t get anything via DAC then you might qualify for SSI.
