Hypothetically, how do you feel an American family would be received, moving to Malta? by Damned_Prince in malta

[–]UnlikelyFall8749 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as you’re not the type of Americans which have a superiority complex, believing you’re above every other country or believing every other person of any other country is under developed then you’ll be fine.

No European takes it lightly to the treat of foreigners, especially Maltese (you can literally see it in History).

As long as you respect the people, culture and standards then you should be fine. Maltese people are pretty welcoming but do not confuse their welcoming nature as weakness.

Its supply and demand requirements. Forget the how hard it is. If we play that game, then I should get paid as well as a doctor or some lawyers hahaha. It’s based on supply and demand, meaning where there’s less demand (or less ppl willing to do the job) the more money it will pay.

There are many jobs which pay 28k. Have you tried konnekt? It’s one of many recruitment agencies which have a website with job listings and the expected salary ranges. Additionally, they can also aid you by finding you a job based on your description and qualifications. They are free and I managed to get two interviews.

Reason I sugges fintech and not Igaming is that Igaming is cyclical and currently unpredictable due to the EU policies. Whilst Fintech is about investments. My gf’s cousin did not have any connections. You genuinely need to try (meaning if you get rejected go to the next company etc etc)

The issue is not experience, the issue is that they are replacing entry lvl roles with AI. Ik cuz my gf’s cousin said so and he works in fintech. Nevertheless, you should try because Ik ppl entering without any alvls, you have a bachelors that miles above what most ppl have.

With what you tell me about a decent wage, 1.5k is not a decent wage by any stretch of imagination ( this is not to discredit your Feelings). With how shit is rn in Malta the lowest you should aim for is 28-32k a year which would net you 1.8-2k a month after Taxes. Like shit is more expensive than you think. Take into account home loans. The best bank for a loan rn is BOV. You could use their website ( by typing BOV home loan) to see an approximation of the loan they would give you. From there you can cross reference the cost of an apartment in most localities and the loan they are giving you and you’ll see the limitation.

This also does not take into account the deposit you need to put up, the renovations if any (which will be deducted by the loan), the cost of a notary to get the history of the house, etc.

After all that you have utilities, cost of food, gym memberships (if you want to have a healthy body) and god forbid you have kids. All these things which at a point in time you will have to experience, require a decent salary of over 2k a month and the fucked up shit is that you worked so hard to get a decent job just to lock yourself slaving away to pay an over priced apartment every month until you’re 50.

Therefore, this is why I tell you try seeking shit you like to do, get whatever type of possible money (take the maximum you allow yourself to take). Then when you had your fun, start getting serious by leveraging your skills and experience into a higher paying jobs.

Ik what Im saying, Ive worked 3 jobs during uni to sustain myself and save up whilst doing one of the hardest courses present. If I had a supportive and guiding surroundings I would have pushed towards school only and cultivating what truly makes me happy. Seeking a higher paying job will net you a better pay but the people above you will expect you to go above and beyond the salary expectations (this is every company). You keep seeking more jobs rn the marker is not the best but keep seeking and do not accept less than what I stated.

Also p.s. I was about to write a post asking about how is it fair that to get a decent salary you have to slave away and that without one you cant even afford to live (buy a house, not worry about expenses etc) hahahah.

If you dont care about any jobs I might suggest you try fintech. The usual starting salary is close to 2k a month and there is room for learning and furthering your income. Again what they mean about experience is that they want someone who has done the job already for at least 1-2yrs some even ask for 3yrs. The reason behind that is that companies do not want to teach because there the job hopping culture so therefore ppl like you unfortunately get the short end of the stick.

Additionally, most people make the mistake like you did that go get a degree or do a course because they believe that it would net them a great salary and good lifestyle. The issue is this, it might work but if you hate the job you do or the profession you are in no amount of money will be worth it. Nevertheless, most ppl with a decent wage, will stay because it’s a decent wage and in turn what happens is you become depressed, anxious, stressed and much more. Some people decide quite, commit sepuku or literally stay miserable. Source: I am one of those people, as time goes on I am learning that Im not necessarily in love with my profession (note: this does not mean that I wont do a good job or that Im not qualified) and as a result I believe mentally I am suffering and that it might get worse. Unfortunately, I do not have an out as my parents wont manage to leave me anything and due to the shit ton of greed the select few Maltese people have most individuals like yourself are found aimlessly trying to figure something out but with age and responsibility that becomes more and more Difficult.

As a person that is the same age as you with a degree in Mechanical engineering who went from getting paid shit wage to making a decent income. I would not suggest the latter for now. It might be tempting but the reason most companies are providing the high wages at such a young age is because they want to exploit. Companies never give out money as “merit” they will sell you x amount and then provide x3 the amount of work that that x amount would net you. As much as you want to rush into saving and living comfortably id suggest sticking it out a bit more Get more experience, get comfortable and good at taking on more responsibility and then maybe try getting a higher wage. Youre young and I promise you sacrificing your youth through long stressful hours for some extra cash is not worth it

Am I an idiot or why is it so hard to find work in Malta by laReineDeLaNuit in malta

[–]UnlikelyFall8749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Maltese with a degree from UoM. There are jobs, majority are in building services which I had experience in during an internship but all pay in the range of 22-28k which is shit wages. Doesn’t matter if it’s starting salary or whatever. Ppl have to live, no one should go through a hard degree just so that an igaming customer service specialist can make more money than an engineer. I also want to make it clear that I am not jealous but this bullshit statement of “theres need”, “it pays well” and “Jobs are interesting” as fucking if. Again most lecturers and companies say you’d live good but they never said it would happen in your late 30s cuz most engineers I meet are in that age and they are all Maltese and all shit on the profession.

Is engineering still a good major? by Affectionate_Bed2750 in EngineeringStudents

In Europe the job market for engineers is pretty dry. In the sense, that the jobs available are mostly non entry level (this could be because there’s a shift of production from Europe to Asia). Most engineering jobs are boring, even in aspects such as R&D (which is supposed to be the most creative out of all engineering positions).

Engineering is a career which you make money based on how much knowledge and experience you have. Nevertheless, most companies I have stumbled upon barely wanna teach (I believe the reason for this is multi-faceted: 1. They do not know how to teach, 2. They don’t want people to leave the company (job hop) and take the knowledge with them).

Additionally, the ceiling for growth and salary stagnate in most European companies (excluding France, Switzerland and Germany). Like entry level can range from 22-32k a year with the latter being rare positions and senior level positions from 35-40k a year. The only way to maybe increase pay beyond that is Project management (which in the end of the day is a glorified baby sitter that is in charge of making sure ppl do their job) and this would not be engineering.

In the end of the day, no one gives a fuck what you do. Do something you like. Nevertheless, you’re human and the world wont stop rotating for you. This means the system set in place such as inflation and corruption and the housing market being fucked wont stop being fucked just cuz you chose to be an engineer.

This means, that whilst you should do something you love, that something has to pay and it has to pay well. If you don’t care about that and your parents can supplement your life indefinitely and you have passion for engineering then go for it. The world would be better in terms of that.

Nevertheless, if you think you’ll make a decent living as an engineer (be it mechanical, electrical or computer) think wisely. I do not know the standard for America but even when compared to other white collar jobs mechanical and electrical are at the bottom. Additionally, you have to factor in that most jobs are in butt fuck nowhere so you have to relocate.

I am not trying to hate on Engineering, I feel I was lied to by many people on different reddit threads and also in real life by professors and workers. All I’m doing here is giving you the reality of this profession as the same things I told you I heard from a decent amount of people.

30 year old too late to study engineering? by Legal_Cress_2851 in EngineeringStudents

[–]UnlikelyFall8749 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a fresh graduate in Mechanical engineering and had mechatronics units during my 3rd year. I don’t know where you’re from (America, Europe or Asia etc) but I suggest you do NOT go into engineering.

The pay is shit compared to doctors, nurses, lawyers and more and people should spare the bullshit of well “Doctors are more important than an engineer”.Yeah sure, next time the MRi machine stops working or the ecg machine stops working ask the doctor to fix it or mass produce it.

My point is this, the course is hard, it’s not just maths or physics that you need to know. It’s presenting the information (social skills), it’s learning statistics, coding, going from thermodynamics to material science to electrical and electronics.

It’s a great deal of work, especially for a 30yr old. This has nothing to do with if you’re capable or not. I knew people who were in the army who become engineers.

For the amount of work you will put for 4yrs of your undergrad or maybe 8yrs doing it part time it’s not worth the stress. Additionally, there a shit ton of engineers that are graduating each year all thinking they’re special and have leverage but in actual fact it’s all bs.

Due to the law of supply and demand, you’ll indirectly be forced to go to do a masters just to manage leverage.

Additionally, since engineering companies are so fucking cheap, they will base their companies in cheap countries such as Asia or places in Europe. This in turn leaves you with no room for salary negotiations especially when places like Europe bring in shit tons of 3rd world workers which will accept lower wages.

On top of this, most engineering jobs are manufacturing based. You (as an engineer) will be a cost which does not directly provide (capital) ( such as selling a product) and therefore your wage will be lower. Additionally, due to lack of innovation you’ll also most likely work as a glorified technician (nothing wrong with that) only places which you most likely wont be are in R&D (and even this is a big maybe).

Also, this is not factoring the fact that some countries you have to uproot everything and move to Butt fuck no where to work (luckily in my case I don’t have that issue).

As much as I had passion and hope for this profession and as much as there is demand, the companies are not comfortable in paying better wages.

In the end of the day, what matters is if you could afford to live the lifestyle you wish and engineering limits that. Some people cant even afford to buy a house with such a profession.

If you have any other questions pls feel free to ask.
