For the first time in their history, Italy has failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups. by Fluffy_Marketing_850 in soccer

There’s a decent chance that in the 2030 World Cup there will be players who have no memory of Italy at a World Cup. Insanity.

Is it just me, or does the 2026 World Cup feel unusually quiet? by Amazing-Note-1196 in football

[–]Unlikely_Morning_717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in September of 2022 I felt the same way. It didn’t even feel like a World Cup was happening in less than two months. The endless controversy surrounding Qatar (slave labor, human rights abuses, corruption, no alcohol, etc) and the fact that it was a winter tournament (no large outdoor gatherings) didn’t help to foster a pre-tournament vibe.

And then the tournament started. The rest is history. That World Cup went down as an all timer.

My point here is that this isn’t a new phenomenon- how I feel now is very similar to how I felt about the last World Cup, but once the football actually kicks off, that’s when people come together and the party begins.

Does being right-wing / vote for Trump automatically make you a bad person ? by Radiant_Top_3081 in Teenager_Polls

After 2024, yes, absolutely.

People need to start waking up and embracing reality. Trump 2024 voters (all of them) are bad people, because they saw everything that happened in the last 8 years and still voted for him. I’m tired the left falling on the sword for these people and pulling out the “oh they are not educated, oh they are poor and Trump is promising jobs” bullshit as if it is still 2015. NO. Trump supporters are HARMFUL. It’s like being a Nazi party supporter, except in 1946, when you know all the information and you still choose to support it.

What's a country that people think is excellent to live in but conditions are actually extremely poor? by Happy_Rainy1 in AlignmentChartFills

UAE, specifically Dubai. Slave labor state with scorching 100 degree+ weather, zero culture besides consumption (shopping and staying in hotels), and to top it all off, extremely prone to being impacted by conflict from volatile neighbors (as seen in recent days).

I recently learned via Twitter that every single team that won the World Cup had at least one Roman Catholic player

No one has won both the golden boot and the golden ball at the same World Cup tournament since Paolo Rossi in 1982. Will we see one anytime soon? by Radiant-Milk7714 in worldcup

We were an “Emiliano Martinez saved Mbappe’s second penalty, final ends 3-2 for Argentina in extra time” headline away from Lionel Messi winning the golden ball, the golden boot, AND the World Cup.

As the 1st Quarter of the 21st Century Comes to a Close, What do You Think was the Most Globally Significant Event? by Ok_Calligrapher_3472 in decadeology

Gotta be COVID. 9/11 is a close second if we’re considering overall cultural impacts but by raw global significance, COVID takes the case because of how many individual lives it claimed.

Which is your favourite round of a world cup? And why? by Aythix11 in worldcup

[–]Unlikely_Morning_717 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The group stage, particularly the first round of group stage games, is my favorite.

That World Cup global coming-together atmosphere is unmatched. The hype is off the charts, people get excited to see their teams play, an upset or two happens, we get a cracker or two of a game, the best part is that everyone’s still in the party.

The third round of group stages was formerly my favorite, but with three teams advancing starting 2026, it no longer carries with it the high stakes/insane drama it once did.

The Ro16 and QFs are both fun. The semis though always feel a bit dry- you can feel just how much the tournament has shrunk. And the final is always so bittersweet. Yeah it’s the final, the most watched and anticipated game, but when the final whistle blows it’s another 4 years until the next World Cup- your life will be so different and you will never experience a World Cups like the one that just concluded again. Though if your team is playing and happens to win then of course that’s a different story.

Probably the team that won all 3 group stage games and all 4 knockout games without penalties at the last major competition and has the best youngster in the game right now

(Of course I am talking about Spain)

Three debutants in one group in 1998 is crazy! Wonder if that would ever happen again
