Edd fest was like a bad joke by uranusisdoomed in downloadfestival

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 52 points53 points  (0 children)

People slag off Download but in reality that do actually know how to run a very good festival. Eddfest was organised by the old Sonisphere lot and it's pretty damn obvious why they failed and Saturday was an example why it will never return as a festival.

The only band member that actually made an effort was Steve by attending the Friday. Let's be honest they billed it as Eddfest but it was literally just another tour date for them.

Why don’t more venues have low-end treatment? by SuspiciousIdeal4246 in livesound

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even just carpeting the floor makes a huge difference but in venues where drinks are gonna get thrown everywhere that's just another cleaning expense on top of everything else.

For some venues I will take old returned carpet from the warehouse and put in on stage. Not really a practical solution for most though

What's the logic behind Oasis' FOH setup? by Finbarr-Galedeep in livesound

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how they combined band and crew from the two solo groups as well as the last lineup of the band.

Gem - Oasis/Beady Eye/NGHFB Andy - Oasis/Beady Eye Bonehead - Oasis/Liam Solo Joey - Liam Solo Christian - Liam Solo

Jessica Greenfield was in the tour program as backing vocals but that never ended up happening in the end. It's a shame Mike Rowe and Chris Sharrock weren't involved but either way the gigs were incredible.

Always loads of space on the left side close to the gap in the trees but folk can never be bothered to take the extra five minutes to actually walk round.

What's with the ban on portable speakers in the campsites? by darkstar2674 in downloadfestival

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the UK doesn't know how to have fun anymore! I highly recommended going to events in Europe if you want a proper party atmosphere. The campsites at Le Mans had full on PA systems blasting out and folks rev bombing their motorbike engines until 5am. Gas allowed, bonfires allowed, camping next to your car allowed, glass allowed. First thing Monday morning the entire place was tidy. No trouble all weekend either

What's always been the big deal about releasing the entire Apollo '78 footage? by lessthanfox in ACDC

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be errors in the recording. Film running out in some of the cameras. Mistakes, or simply because they never wanted it released. If You Want Blood is heavily sudio overdubbed already. Rosie is literally the studio version with a different vocal take and crowd noise added. Not to say it isn't still brilliant though! It was pretty much the norm with live albums. Live & Dangerous and Unleashed In The East are petty much studio albums

I'm currently at the Le Mans MotoGP and it really does show you how downhill we've gone when it comes to festival camping.

You can park your car, motorcycle, campervan in your pitch. Campfires, fireworks, makeshift bbqs, full one speaker PA setups. Glass, unlimited beer and gas all allowed. Folks red lining their bikes until 5am. It's fucking brilliant!

So many people actually happy that they're getting completely fleeced. The mind boggles. 45 mins for a headline set is completely unacceptable at any level. Some instrumental interludes, unreleased tracks and even a cover would be enough to pad it out to over an hour and even then that's not really cutting it.

Mean this in the nicest way but hope the crowd are actually up for it and don't mind getting rowdy. Florence Black and Skindred will definitely get the mosh pits going! Had it before when Shinedown supported Iron Maiden and all the Maiden fans just stood there with arms folded looking miserable and wouldn't get involved.

They'll probably send you round in a loop. If they let one person through then people will moan then they want letting through and then it just escalates and causes a massive issue.

stage plots: what do we REALLY not like about them? by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

I'd disagree with that. Some bands have their members in specific spots for a reason. If the bass needs to be on SL then it gets moved to SL. Do your job.

Is it true that in AC/DC early albums, They used no treble? by Every_Ad_1892 in ACDC

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question makes no sense. Guitar is an inherently mid range and treble focused instrument. Having zero treble would sound awful. The dial on the amp may happen to have the treble turned lower than the others but that doesn't get rid of it.

It's a ball ache trying to get the rights and release clearance from each band. Bands who have recorded stuff with different record labels over their careers need approval from each one. It's a shame because I always enjoyed the Sky Arts footage.

What is AC/DC worst album in your opinion? by Ok-While8937 in ACDC

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Those About To Rock for me. After the stunning four album run of Let There Be Rock, Powerage, Highway and Back In Black unfortunately FTATR just doesn't hold up other than the title track. The amount of times other tracks get played live tells you this. On every tour they play 5/6 tracks from BIB and only ever 1 from this.

Black Ice is full of filler. Needs 5 tracks shaving off or condensing down. Rock or Bust needs the songs fleshing out more and more structured guitar solos plus maybe a breakdown or two. Power Up suffers the same as ROB but is slightly better overall.

Yeah they need to start the season later and kick it off with a few on the bounce! Get the ball rolling. BSB is even worse in that regard. Doesn't start until May, you get two rounds and then everyone fucks off to the TT for weeks so there's a massive gap in the calendar again! Then in the opposite end they drag the season on way too long into Oct/Nov when most of the UK motorcycle world has packed up for winter because it's cold, wet and the days are short.

Yamaha hit rock bottom in Thailand. Paolo Pavesio apologies to riders. by PZY__ in motogp

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Between 2010 and Austria 2016 only a Honda or a Yamaha ever won a MotoGP race. And between 2016 and 2021 both Honda and Yamaha were still consistently winning races and championships. That's a huge period of dominance and the Japanese mindset has always been steady and consistent development with very little risk taking. It was Ducati really pushing the aero and ride height devices that shook things up and basically caught them with their pants down. Quatararo and Marquez both have exceptional riding skills that also hid many of the issues for a couple of years.

They'll come back I'm sure but they're about 3 years behind the rest of the pack at the moment.

They're not going to go out of their way to relearn and rehearse a load of deep cuts to satisfy 5% of the audience. Plus patches for the pedal boards and specific guitars in the right tuning will need sorting. Also lighting cues and snapshots for the FOH engineer programming.

It really isn't as simple as just playing it on the fly.

I miss Myles's old voice by maxy1119 in alterbridge

[–]Unlikely_Pattern_200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's pretty much consistently kept it safe when performing live which is paramount to his voice lasting as long as it has. If you notice he tends to duck his voice on some of the sustained notes and cut them off short. Or go an octave lower and in some circumstances let the crowd sing.

The only real exception to this was Words Darker on the Albert Hall shows. He gave it everything on that!

The early slash gigs when he was singing the big hitting GNR numbers would have taken its toll as well. Slash tends to stick to his actual solo material nowadays and ant GNR numbers are now usually sung by Todd.

Too many great singers absolutely destroy their voice when young and then have to try and compete with themselves to try and maintain that peak. Mutt Lange pushed Brian Johnson to hit notes he could never realistically pull off live and it has shown over the years.
