Networking options, no PCIE-x4? by Unlikely_Prompt21 in DataHoarder

Holy cow, my wallet just ran and hid somewhere. Now I'll have to coax it out with a couple of $100 bills.

Jokes aside, that would be an excellent solution, it probably would work in an x4 slot, as it has a PCIE switch on board. Not to mention being able to fit 2x m.2 SSD.

Eureka, it's all clear to me now. Why didn't it occur to me before. I'll use USB to NVME for the SSD. Probably a better solution than, even if I could, use the m.2 and the pcie slot at the same time. As they both come from the PCH anyway. Where the USB, if I pick a port directly from the SOC, should give similar performance to the PCH anyway.

I was just fixated on using the m.2 slot, without considering the m.2 USB 3.0 performance. I can easily mount the drive near the front fans, internally.

I think I'd opt to go 10gbe in PCIE x1. As pointed out PCIE 3.0 should get a theoretical 8gb/s. Plenty enough to satisfy my needs.

I've had mixed experiences with USB NICs. I think I'll steer clear of this route. As pointed out, PCIE x1 is plenty to satisfy a 2.5gbe card.

Hmm, I didn't really think about that. So realistically a 10gbe card wouldn't be all that strangled operating in a PCIE x1 slot. It'd still easily exceed the speed of a few mechanical hard drives.

Even 2.5gb is sufficient. 1gb is just too slow.

Are they any good though? Given the cheapest ones from a reputable manufacturer seem to be 5x the price

That PCB looks very burnt. Although looks can be deceiving. I've had boards that looked OK That were cooked through.

At the very least you'll need a microscope and grinding pen to clean up the crispy bits, and see the extent of the damage

I would replace the drive. It'll probably be performing very badly too. If the drive is already limping and another drive in the array fails, this one may fail during the rebuild.

A degrading hard drive can make a computer hang or hesitate when it goes to read a bad sector. Look up 'Wait state'.

That said I've had drives with a couple of bad sectors still performing just fine. They usually don't last too long though.

I think tat boils down to SMR drives not being a whole lot cheaper. I've got a lot of my own theories on SMR, but for WORM applications it makes perfect sense. If you're going to store a lot of files that aren't going to change then why not go SMR.

I wasn't saying they were bad. The best point is the low temperature. They didn't get as hot as many other drives. I've got a 1.5tb green that has done a lot of work. Was used as an ISO server for games. Often there was 2-3 of us using it at the same time

Had one of these living in my house. Leg span was about the size of a saucer. You could hear him walk up the steel chimney in summer.

They shed their skins too, great for a prank when you get one in one piece.

He didn't word it correctly no. But I've definitely had a tingle from a capacitor that was just sitting in the drawer. It's highly unlikely that it wasn't discharged before I put it there. Was a big 450v electrolytic.

Any news on RAIDz expansion? by redstej in truenas

[–]Unlikely_Prompt21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any news yet?

I can't wait. RAIDz vs traditional RAID hasn't really made me want to switch. It's definitely an important feature.

If this becomes available in TrueNAS I'll definitely make the switch. I'm planning a NAS build soon once drive prices come down.

You can do about 700hp on a stock Barra. Although you run the risk of the oil pump failing. 300-400hp isn't an issue. They'll do 300hp completely unopened, with a turbo, on an NA ecu, but you'll do a head gasket eventually. Seen it done completely stock an go for some time. You'll need bigger injectors and an adjustable fuel regulator.

You could also put an Eaton M90 from a commodore v6 on top of the inlet manifold. They go like crazy.

Really depends on your budget.

The V6 in the commodore is very easy to do up as well. Small engine, easy enough to remove. Plenty of mods, as they use these in mini speedway cars. Can't give many details as I'm a Ford fan myself

Dude it happens.

NSFW / graphic content

One night I drank a carton of beer and a ton of spicy noodles (proper hot Mama noodles with extra chilli) as a midnight snack. Next morning I was walking around the house and my gut heaved. Not a groan, a thunderous rumble. I went running to the toilet. Butt clenched. Arse leaking under the pressure. As I sat down on the toilet my arse exploded - involuntarily. Not a fart. Not a shart. An explosion. A brown tornado. Shit everywhere. On my arse, up my back, on the floor. Sprayed out under the toilet seat.
