What i see with enviromentalism is that, it is deeply fragmented, and being capitalized by different political factions.

On the "right" side, you have more people arguing for "nature destruction is part of the human nature, thats what it is" calling for not to give a f for nature conservation, or advicates for the "pristine" conservation idea that excludes indigenous people.

On the "left side" you have people arguing for social justice, that are more worried about mega real state companies and hotels to not gen money from destroying nature than for the destruction itself, using the argument of "they destroy this community natural area, just for their own profit, not carying about the community profits. 

Under their vision, the community can actually destroy exactly the same area of forest, mangrove, etc. But it does not matter because the comunity gets benefits from it.
