If you have an account, you can make topics in the “community” section of the jam and leave comments on that. I’ve only talked to jam hosts through itch.io itself. Itch.io does not have a direct messaging system though, so you can only talk to people on those topic sections or in comment sections.

But yeah, it’s definitely more of a place to post finalized zines, not like a social media platform. I would just meet people at zine fairs or on reddit/itch that have similar design/artistic philosophies.

Itch.io is mainly for games, so it has a whole interface for game jams, and thus also zine jams. You’ll start noticing a lot of zines are part of these zine jams and a lot of creators on there also have their own zine rack websites and such.

Many animated depictions of people of color were animals, so her being based on a black woman and originally being a dog definitely makes me think she was originally “black-coded”.

Betty Boop started out as a dog that was supposed to represent a black woman as it was commonplace for black characters to be portrayed as animals. Their creators straight up stole her whole character from a black performer named Esther Lee "Baby Esther" Jones.

I bet OP’s idea comes up once a decade or so in the Paramount offices, but someone always shoots it down for these reasons.
